A wonderful piece of classical music played by excellent musicians! The surrounding church setting beautifully captured the music. Thank you for uploading! I enjoy listening to this piece repeatedly! My favorite segment is the "Ich nehme mein Leiden" because of the way the oboe d'amour blends beautifully with the basso continuo (organ). Amazing job by all the instrumentalists, soloists (choir), and the filming crew!

I just cannot comprehend the generative genius & contrapuntal complexity of the Sinfonia! Five-note melodic lines repeat a step up in ascending direction, only to compete with each other, cooperate during the chorale theme, and come rambling back more exuberant than ever. Like Mozart's fourth mvt of the Jupiter, or Wagner's Overture to Die Meistersinger, I think this is the apex of Bach's skill in flawless, pulsing polyphony.

Bach had to know that his listeners would watch with enthusiasm as each “separate” voice (and melody line) would enter the “mass” of sound, and even try to predict the key the entry would take. And that we would also relish how he worked the multi-voice Fugue to end in a major triad. We have become enthusiastic and enthralled participants in his technology of composition. He also varied his rhythm choices, with moments of silence. We would then wonder what key would erupt after the moment of silence. Bach was a master of obligato and had his own decoration of his musical room, with window dressing always interesting, without being overbearing. Sanjosemike
@sanjosemike31375 жыл бұрын
@Jay Preis Didn't know that. But Bach's audience understood German (of course) and were much more knowledgeable of the Protestant Bible than modern people are. They "knew" the liturgy of the day. Modern audiences have no idea what Bach was having his soloists singing about. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

It's kind of funny in the way that the first two Cantatas BWV 75,and 76 that Bach selected in his first two weeks, both in two parts, much longer than the other Cantatas for the rest of his first season in Leipzig,or for the majority of his remaining Cantatas cycles in Leipzig . This is not an original idea of mine that BWV 75 and 76 was too taxing for the students who had to perform Bach Cantata weekly. So Bach had too subsequently, write shorter Cantatas to be performed, as a rule, not less of a masterpiece,of course.
@herrickinman93035 жыл бұрын
Typically, two cantatas were performed: one before the sermon, one after. In the case of the longer 2-part cantatas, the first part was performed before the sermon, the second part after the sermon. The cantatas (and the sermon) were tailored to fit official Lutheran bible readings for the Sunday (or other church day). The cantatas were like a musical sermon. The number of vocal movements was the about same in each part, whether the cantata was in one part or two. Bach did not have to rely on the boys of the Thomas School to perform his cantatas; he also had help from talented university students, some of which were his private students who paid for the lessons by performing in his cantatas. Also, his Leipzig church music was typically performed one voice to a part. The singers who sang the sang the solos (they were called "concertists") also comprised the chorus where they might be doubled by another singer (called a ripienist). This division between concertists and ripienists was quite common in early 18th-century church music.
