At my age, my father listened to Bach, every morning. And now every morning I can, through Bach, connect to his memory and love him the more for this memory of him. Is anyone else awestruck by our good fortune that someone with so much music in him was productive enough to leave as much as he did for us to enjoy? Those don't seem to go together often.

To answer your very valid question, it is very suspicious, because neither his compositional method nor accounts of how he composed has come to us. Well that's not really fair to say because it is true for all composers. But there is no answer. He was the greatest composer.

@JuanRamonSilva I totally agree that is how it was possible in those days, but you forgot to mention the way society was organized by family trades. And the Bachs were in Music. What i am saying is that it remains a mystery how much of JS. Bach compositions are entirely his work. Just like famous painters had apprentices who painted the background or collaborated to speed up work. I suspect something like this happened with JS. I suspect that these were not his sons but anonymous apprentices entirely devoted to JS's own style and who left no trace as they were fully at the service of JS. I could be wrong.

@JuanRamonSilva You make a major anachronism mistake you transpose the individualistic society of the last century to the baroque era. It was not at all that mentality. The mass of people did not exist as individual back then, even children were ignored by their parents until the age of 6-7 because it was common for a good half of them to die in childhood. People born in a trade had no rights to become independent unless they became master themselves and they were perfectly happy of a life in artistic servitude. So no, it's quite possible anonymous apprentices in the family gladly spend all their life at the service of the JS Bach household without leaving a trace. And no they did not have to be geniuses to provide significant support. They would do intermediary work and JS Bach would perfect and make the final cut. No doubt some work like the P&F are original but some others may not be.

I am your twin. For me, J.S. Bach provided a kind of spiritual sustenance which I imbibed thirstily at our small Congregational church in Rhode Island through lovely live music performances by parishioners, then through vinyl LPs at home (many of which I bought with my own pocket money), and finally, as a young woman, at concerts in Cambridge, England and beyond. The symmetries, the architectural scaffolding upon which he hangs his ever-ascending soulful, inspirational edifices, usher one into quiet places both of contemplation and deep, true joy. They have saved me many times, too, these exalted and exalting compositions.

I'm not much of a classical fan, but Bach on a lute or guitar is just another level. I'm not enough of an expert to know why, but my rock n roll brain cells accept Bach just like any good acoustic rock song. It's mathematical like an irrational number. You see many interesting sequences that never repeat. It's like looking at sand under a microscope and seeing endless numbers of various crystals without duplicates.

Most modern music, including Stephen Stills, is indeed satanic. You see, modern music (rock, trap, rap, pop, country, etc.) uses a strong rhythmic beat (backbeat) that's designed to target your flesh, instead of your spirit. Good music targets your spirit and draws you closer to God. The music that the world produces today is nothing but nightclub music designed to get you to dance and fornicate (just look up the original meaning of the phrase "rock and roll" if you don't believe me). There's nothing spiritual about it, except that it's spiritually depraved. Rock music bears no resemblance at all to what Bach wrote.

Yes, v.r., he was called "the old Square" by some of his children (several of whom were musicians and composers themselves). He died after unsuccessful eye surgery in 1750, 65 years of age. "Bach" means "brook" in German. Beethoven was quoted as saying, " He was not a brook, but an Ocean." Mendelssohn's conducting and presenting the Matthew Passion was what precipitated J. Sebastian Bach's revival and the rest is history, as they say. Yes, much gratitude is owed Felix M., in addition to his own music. 👍

@@Anna-pv4tv Oh absolutely. I have the recordings on CD even! Sometimes the interpretation comes off harsh but that was the style of the era--a much more rigid playing of Bach. I look to sonata no. 1 adagio, the fugues of each sonata, and the chaccone as my benchmark (usually).

This sounds of a familiar resonance. My mother, father and Grandfather and uncles on my mothers side were all performing musicians to varying degrees and while my fate would lead me to follow a different path in Architecture I find great joy and enrichment discovering and exploring a very broad range of musical genres which some of my contemporaries find amusing. I usually will spend a certain amount of time in a particular artist, composure, instrument or genre but sometimes it can be fun to set a play list on random while others are passing thru my music bubble but it can be rather perplexing to those who are not quite as musically adventurous in their exploration and probably should be reserved for my own private enjoyment but once in awhile for laughs I will share some of the joy. I hope you continue to have a fabulous musical safari, keep blazing the roads less traveled and you will find some of the rarest treasures that usually stay well hidden. It's and amazing time to be able to explore so much content that was not so easily available in earlier times. There are some delightful South American composers and musicians that are rarely considered in the classical guitar genre that are brilliant and undiscovered by most. Argentina is a fun place to explore musically.

I am a hardline atheist. In the Belgian TV series "Professor T", the brilliant Professor himself -- an atheist if ever there was one -- declares: "Bach ist Gott" and I think I know what he means. There is something almost supernatural about the genius of Bach, something that almost defies comprehension, seems impossible. You can try to put it in words, as I am trying now, and you fail. These are challenging pieces but nowhere near the top in terms of difficulty..! Playing Bach's solo violin partitas and sonatas is a step in every student's journey but there are many much harder pieces out there ^^

John C Yes and no. It's not "less challenging" to play a Bach fugue WELL on solo violin than a Paganini concerto

@@Barde_Jaune Bach is by far the hardest composer to interpret, especially on the violin. Technique-wise it is is also very very demanding of perfect intonation and pure tone. I'd say these works are probably the hardest there is in violin repertoire.

It should be noted that the masterpieces played here are all originally from violin sonatas & partitas composed by J.S.Bach and only BWV 1006a was arranged for lute by Bach.

+Yewon Cho I think you meant BWV 1006a. That, however, is not arranged for lute - it is more likely a harpsichord piece or possibly lute-harpsichord, two examples of which Bach owned. Also, the key of BWV 1006a is wrong - E-Dur is impossible on the lute. F-Dur is far more practical, allowing the use of an open f string. The Fuge BWV 1000 is an arrangement of the second movement of the 1st Sonata by Bach's pupil Johann Christian Weyrauch in Leipzig.

The Chaconne from the Violin Partita in d minor is a transcription for lute. Brahms may very well have made this quote, as he himself transcribed it for piano, left hand alone, published 1879. I know it well, as I performed it in my Junior Recital, Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, and elsewhere professionally, in the States and Canada. It is a profound work, as is much of Bach, and very demanding for the left hand alone. Brahms called it "Studies for Piano #5", yet he did not change a note of the score, other than transpose it down to the bass, where the left hand can create resonance and a very rich, warm sound on a fine piano in a good hall. My late Professor, Alfonso Montecino, told me after the recital, I gave, "The Bach was magnificent!". The original piece for violin is also virtuosic, but was not composed for that reason. He dedicated every note that he wrote, "to the glory of God."

I took two years or piano lesson an eleven and twelve year old and abruptly switched to drums as a freshman in high school. Guitar drew me in shortly after. Blues and rock drew me to take lessons, and my late father actually took me to a Segovia concert as a thirteen year old. Even though my collection of guitars have collected dust for some time, I've been lucky to go to many rock concerts from the early '70s to 2014. I didn't have to stick-to-itiveness as a younger person. I learned the art of patience, though... and carefully watching guitarists on stage. Many shows I was much to far from the stage to study what musicians were doing, though. I recommend new guitarists look at videos like Paco deLucia and Al DiMeola. The inspiration their talent serves is beyond measure. I think the recording I had on cassette thirty years ago was called "Live in San Francisco." Of all the music I have listened to, this one is truly inspirational, IF YOU WANT TO LEARN THE GUITAR. Check out the recording.

Adding to the thread regarding the lutenist, I have many interpretations of this work, both guitar and lute and I find there is something very unique and soothing in this one. Which is surprising because over the years I have preferred the guitar... especially that of Paul Galbraith, but I think we should tip our hats to the producer and engineer for the sound quality, although, that being said the artist is the source of the excellent sound that the triumvirate has given us.
