Back 4 Blood Review - The Final Verdict

When it comes down to it, Back 4 Blood is virtually everything I could have wanted in a Left 4 Dead 3. Turtle Rock has taken everything they did in the original series, sprinkling in some of their work since, and made a core co-op zombie survival shooter that is as satisfying and replayable as pretty much any of its competitors.
Its only major downfalls are the points where it tries to do too much, both in its campaign structure complexity and its solo campaign gatekeeping, but on the gameplay front, these aren’t quite game-breaking. Back 4 Blood can only be compared to what came before it, and it very nearly lives up to the giant its clear influences have become over the years.

I think the game is awesome!! Just wish the special zombies where more unique like that Which, Tank, Hunter, Boomer was. They spawn to frequently. They need to make them spawn less but more stronger with a special intro to them. Like when you would hear the Which crying and was terrified to go around the corner hoping not to run into her. 😂😂😂

Game is great. Great atmosphere, cool weapons, and just a lot of fun to play. But, the game definitely suffers in certain aspects: the bad AI, intense difficulty spike near the end, the constant special infected, annoying enemies that will render you incapable of moving all the damn time, the overall imbalance of difficulty, and the fact that you need a ps plus account to even start the game, let alone play solo, all make this game suffer. Turtle Rock is a good company but some of their decisions don’t make any sense.

That's good to know, recruit is vastly easier than the beta and even with 2 ai's hardly a challenge on the first few missions. Swarm was better than expected, and the medium tears seems more balanced than the beta so far. I have not made it that hard sk maybe difficulty increases, for recruit that would be a better thing.

I had the same issue, INSTEAD, go and create a NEW campaign run from the starting point you wish to continue from, it matches you almost instantly, I couldn't understand why I couldn't find any matches on a newly released game.. It's a design flaw for sure.

A loud/aggressive subset of the L4D community went around spreading misinformation and hate and trying to actively sabotage the game. KZbin influencers and reviewers took the bait and cashed in on early reaction videos for $ and traffic. The release is better than the beta, but not THAT much better. I hate that. They would rather force you to buy a second console for your siblings/children/colleagues instead of simply adding a local co-op mode. Back in the L4D days, I could get a second controller and we could play both online and offline campaigns. And you can't even pause the game when you're playing offline! They're murdering this game for so many. The card system is also going to prevent regular people from just getting the game and having fun. Even recruit mode becomes a pain in the pass with bad cards.

Love the game so far, though I really wanted more enemy variety that force you to change strategy. Also a deeper progression system with rpg elements (just minor like KF2), that would also give a satisfying incentive to grind zombies and be better equipped for the harder difficulties. Am I the only one experiencing issue & bugs with the aiming? It seem like there’s a lag in when I move my stick to when it moves on screen. Also the aiming often over compensates & moves my aim either way too far off track or not enough. I’ve tweaked the sensitivity & deadzone settings on my controller but it seems as if theres no sweet spot. This is literally the only complaint I really have about the game so far; the game is very difficult because I can’t seem to aim properly & get shots on target.

My complaint is that the aiming and the movement feels clunky and unnatural. Like there's no speed ramp up for when you start moving. It feels as thought you're on wheels and you start and stop moving too robotically. Maybe it's just me but moving around, especially diagonally feels incredibly weird

Get Game Pass for the first month and then see for yourself. It's your money so it's up to you to decide whether or not it's a $60 game. Where I live, the standard version is going for ~20% of our minimum wage while the deluxe edition is going for roughly 40% and I'm not adapting very well to the card system yet. The game is dead on arrival, l4d2 still has an active player base on Steam, original modded campaigns, custom servers for ranking, local server hosting without port forwarding, and faster, balanced, skill based gameplay with unmatched dismemberment, perfect variety between weapons which all feel practical and unique, great level design philosophy, momentum based movement incorporating dodging, and a melee system that can be mastered and effective. Ageless art style, impeccable detail, fun interesting characters, endless replay-ability without relying on generic modern game mechanics like card systems or XP. B4B will probably be $20 in about 2 months in a desperate attempt to sell copies because no person in their right mind should pay over $60 for it. Maybe get Killing Floor 2 for $7 instead.

Been saying it since the release of the price point and zero modding support that this game is dead on arrival. Developers made some horrible choices. Killing Floor 1/2 are amazing games and if it's actually $7 I also recommend KF2 over B4B. But yeah, modded L4D2 > B4B always and any way. A modded game of a very, very similar genre will always obliterate the competition. Got me wanting to play some L4D2 modded campaigns now.

@@adamarzo559 Killing Floor used to be terrifying to me, so was KF-2 when it launched. A lot of the updates for the second game lately have been fun, but gimmicky and unnecessarily quirky. The variety of perks and the roles they played always made the series stand out to me though, I still play it just to check out what’s new. I wish Valve would just work with some random development studio out there and create a major, paid l4d spin-off/expansion using Source. Either giving us what came after the events, or a new cast of characters set in the western United States further down the infection. They know they can’t make L4D3 and have it actually improve upon an already perfected formula, but given what the second game is to the first, they don’t really have to that drastically, and it doesn’t have to be called “Left 4 Dead 3”. Just faithful redesigns/evolutions of the specials and commons further in the infection would be great, maybe a new gun and reskins + animations for all, 3 melee, 1 new throwable. Possible Source 2 upgrade for all original maps in the process. Modders with a ton of backing could probably pull it off in S&box as it evolves with Valves supposed future titles, and form a studio in the process. Lol like that will ever happen. Maybe though. I hear ya, there aren’t many new games that I genuinely get excited for these days. My early impressions of Back 4 Blood are positive. The fun factor IS there for me. I’m on Xbox Series X and the control sensitivity seems off compared to L4D 1&2, but I’m confident that some tinkering will dial it in. To be honest I’m thrilled to have a new zombie game from the creators of L4D, and hope that this is the start of something special.

My feelings that are common with many is the difficulty spike late game is an adjustment but not too bad. Main problem is the jump from recruit to veteran is night and day. Lastly the special enemies spawn way too frequently and don’t feel special at all just kinda more shit to throw at you. Besides these problems the game is absolutely amazing

I'm in love with this game. Put up my first playthrough of it and it was kind of confusing why we weren't able to play with bots and had to join randos. But it's such an upgrade from L4D so far (which I've got like 200 hours in). Definitely not a game that requires story, just satisfying zombie kills 😂 Can't wait to deep-dive into all the enhancements and difficulties

I think the game is decent but no offline pausing, no local co-op and being way too hard for newbies are 3 aspects which are ruining my first impressions. Sure, I will keep playing and become a decent player eventually, but this doesn't have that Smash Bros feeling L4D had. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's not L4D but party games like this should welcome new players in a better way. Because Turtle Rock advertised it as the spiritual successor to L4D2. They literally gave it the same fucking naming system. They advertised their company as the creators behind L4D - they had borderline NOTHING to do with Left 4 Dead. You know what they DID make? Evolve; a similarly overhyped game that crashed and burned at launch because it was a good concept that had been executed incredibly blandly. B4B is probably doomed to fall the same way.

Honestly, I think there should have a difficulty below recruit. I've not tried harder difficulties yet but I've seen some clips of 5+ specials spawning at the same small place lol it's ridiculous. The difficulties just feel cheap. I heard you can easily beat it once your deck is better but then again, how is this any welcoming for noobs? Recruit should simply spawn less special zombies so people could get used to the game and mechanics.

If they scaled the difficulty of the game down then i feel it would make the card system pointless. Because once you grind alil, not even a lot just alil. You can get some badass cards like one gives you infinite ammo for your secondary or one will give you 40 percent health efficiency which will make it easier. Just gotta keep going. Also one complaint imo would be the reuse of bosses like breakers and orge.

I regret buying this game and wish I could have seen angry Joe's review before buying. His review was spot on and I hate the design of this game. Oh well maybe they will send some updates and give better pvp. Seriously it's not that hard to make a good design for a game. Pvp should have more players. Period. Make it where we have to hold down a building vs zombie players and the players can fortify and add stuff to the building and with campaign.. gosh it should be apparent but make it more personal. Make it so we get attached to the toon we play by letting us level up our base level or something that affects the toon we pick, as well as better gameplay over all. I loved playing the beta to a point it was all I would do, and was sad when the beta ended but in saying that this is definitely not a game I will be purchasing, not at full price anyway. $90 Australian price tag for what's on offer is absurd. Let's remember that the developers have stated no mod support. I wanted to love this game but the price tag kills it. In a way I feel sorry for the developers but also I dislike them because they know this genre of game is popular and they think they can unofficially release an L4D sequel and because of that charge premium for minimal content. The fact that they have a DLC roadmap already when the game is lacking content is utterly hilarious. Even on sale I feel I will be avoiding this title.

The acts in the campaign mode are long, there’s so much more to do in the full game. The full game is my favorite game in a long long time. The beta was a tiny tease at what the full game is. But that’s just me and I respect your opinion. But I’ve been blown away by with what comes after what the beta showed. And I actually love the card system, which I didn’t think would be the case. Playing a long campaign with friends has been unbelievable. The original L4D games were masterpieces but I love how the acts are even longer in B4B. There are things I still love more in the original L4D but there are also things I love more in B4B. For those who wanna be careful with their money, B4B is on game pass . So you don’t have to even buy it if you have game pass 🙏 I have game pass but I still bought it haha, because just like Evolve and L4D I know I’ll be playing B4B for years to come

I played L4D way back, and I’m definitely on the fence about this one. Still haven’t bought the game, and so far? I’m for sure not sold on any of the reviews i’ve seen. You’re welcome to convince me to buy it, but the 60$ tag, oof, that’s a lot of money for a game that i’ve heard SO much negativity about. Idk, man. I wanna play it, just the money which is stopping me. Can anyone confirm if there’s a refund option or if it works?

Any game you buy on Steam you can refund if you play the game for only about an hour or two. But B4B is not worth it, not at full price. If you're curious, wait for it to go on sale. It's an awkward, sluggish version of L4D with strange mechanics and poor execution, but some people still seem to enjoy it. The overall consensus is that the game is bad, but there is a diehard community that defends it, so. Hard to say either way.

I think the special ridden are getting a hard time. The variable boomers are good; never always know whether they are bile or explosive. The Tall men mechanically act a bit like chargers but with more of a surprising range to them. The wall pods are a nice, new idea punishing those who loot up on their own. Crows are a nice evolution of witches. Ogres are effectively tanks, I simply wish they were not as big so they had more map flexibility. I feel they were designed for marketing. My main real comparative gripe is that the basic zombie horde never feels as threatening as L4D; maybe it is simply to do with engine numbers. THE REAL issue with B4B is that the Unreal engine has never had satisfying Gun/aim feeling. It's always a bit stiff and yet muddy and slidey. With this i can see why valve supposedly canned L4D 3 due to not being able to decide what engine to run it on. There choice was to probably spend resources to tool up the source engine for modern consoles or use Unreal. And thus we do not have L4D 3.

As an FPS, it brings nothing new to the table, just the opposite. After playing shooters like Hell Let Loose, Hunt Showdown, Insurgency Sandstorm, PUBG, Escape from Tarkov, COD Warzone, etc., the gunplay in B4B feels like trash compared to the modern shooter. Those games spoiled me.

Recruit feels normal Veteran feels very hard You get dropped w.o beating the first area on Nightmare Specials spawn crazy fast. The second you make a wrong move the game snowballs itself, spawning in specials on top of the specials you're already fighting. Playing slow is asking for a bad time. Evangelo is probably the best survivor, considering 3 different specials grab/stun you, his break can get out out a spot.. Your deck _has to have_ Cards that compliment each other, otherwise the 5 and 10% dont mean anything. Cards don't even randomize. 15 slots and I'm still using the same 10 cards. I didn't plan to type all this but I'm halfway thru the game and I have a lot to say.

I love the game, I hate easy games this game makes you work for it, now in days people want stuff easy and given to them, love how each of 1 special infected has 3 different variants connected to them, it seems there the same but there not, love the hag also reminds me of witches one shot, put instead the hag devours you, maps are ok, enjoy having 8 characters to choose from each one having there own speciality make you think which one would be the best at the moment, then the cards adds what kinda player you want to be during that phase, only bad thing I can say is the versus mode was kinda hoping for like left 4 dead type of style instead of the survive but still enjoyable

Halfway through my first level with others, everyone left leaving me with a bunch of bots. During my second runthrough nobody was healing each other and we kept dying over and over. This game has some issues

You'd have to nerf how many attachments are available by alot. Between the ones in loot and the ones that come preloaded on guns people would be running purple attachments or better at basically all time. Getting great gun AND great attachments is supposed to be rare.

Like this game but no versus campaign is ridiculous. Also it lacks so much personality. Tank and witch were so iconic but this has none of those. There’s nothing like The sounds of hunter jumping across buildings or witch’s crying or tanks music. It’s lacking so much banter between characters too. I miss the finales where you have to hold up for a few waves then rush across the map to the escape and narrowly avoid danger. Those moments where the smoker catches you just before you get in the helicopter but you tell your friends to leave you 😂 this game had none of those feelings and I bought the $120 version

Take it from me L4D is still better, B4B is designed around grinding out these stupid ability cards to be able to tackle the other difficulties. Outside of being prettier there is nothing B4B does that L4D doesnt do better.

The game states on the box you can play solo, but the problem is that it still requires you to have some kind of network function (Playstation Access, Xbox LIve), which is BS! It seems like it pushes and forces you to get a subscription service, which should have been not necessary. I'll stick with it because I'm a fan of the series, but give me the older games and the simplicity of playing them any day of the week over this title.

But you are right, bugs and unfinished games should not be acceptable, NOW, I can only imagine how hard it is to develop for PC since there are 100's or more possible convinations of hardware. Optimizing for EVERYTHING may be a bit hard.

I have Game Pass so I can play it on that. But it's not a game I would buy for full price. Maybe $39.99 or $49.99. it's a ok to good zombies shooter that has so bugs that need to get worked out. Hopefully they will. This game would for sure be good if they fixed things up a little. For now 6/10.
