In this video we replace the crank pulley, I give you some tips and we see if we can bring my mighty Rover 75 back to life. This is a common issue on cars with the TD4, M47, M47R engine. The sound described as catastrophic engine failure (crankshaft) was actually the pulley disintegrating and hitting the body of the car. This isn't really a how to but you could use it as such there are better guides on the Rover 75/MG ZT club forum
Context: So I was driving and unfortunately the worst happened, the video speaks for itself. If anyone can help let me know.
Basically my car suffered a suspected catastrophic engine failure (supposedly) when pulling into a Starbucks, unfortunately it looks like it's curtains for my Rover 75 Diesel

It’s good you’re keeping a classic on the road, I need a decent mobile mechanic for mine as I can’t do most of those jobs you’ve done to your car as I park roadside. I’m having a new starter motor fitted on mine as it’s currently immobile.

Rover 75 and a young lad (BRIT) You have a great car here. I have driven a 75 many years ago and thought it was top class. Not Phallic nor Germanic. Just a British Rose X

Good lad! Glad to see it back on the road! I can totally relate to the after fix feeling - a mix of relief and disbelief! Have a bit of welding to do on own my 1.8 Conn of the same colour. Keep it up!

Hi Tom. I felt your pain at the original diagnosis. So glad it wasn't the end after all. Pity about the warranty claim. Always liked the High End Model of the 75. Nearest I got to it was owning a Rover 216. See you in the next one. 👍👍

You should update on which pulleys you looked at before buying and of course which one the unhelpful garage fitted for you. Glad it seems to be sorted, it’s not the luckiest Rover 75 but it is a nice one.

Thanks for this. Was a recent fault on my CDTi Connoisseur. Would of given this a go myself confidently but would not of been able to do the fault diagnosis. About to fit a Head Unit and i agree with the upgrade from the Xtrons about whatever is in the unit is the same but the label on the side changes. Great videos

Hi Tom. Well done in removing and fitting the crank pulley, most people never try to do this as lots can go wrong, using the method you used to loosen the bolt, also using a torque gun this can throw out the timing chain, the crank pulley should be tightened up in increments of 100Nm+60+60+30 there is a special tool to lock the crank 12-177 i have seen a car smash its cam followers using a gun to undo and tighten the pulley up, but as i say well done, always best to remove the wheel arch liner completely as this will give you more room when you come to put the belts back on, which can be a nightmare as you found out, if you can at some time get a torque on the bolt to check it's all correct, where did you purchase the Corteco from, the old pullet looks like a BG one but not 100% maybe see you at one of the Nano's 2023

Mine failed on the M4 coming back from Bristol. I need rhe car for work and with the weather being bad and not having a suitable place to work on it, it went to a garage. They charged 350 quid for pulley replacement and belt too which was quite reasonable. MGRS of Wycombe was the company.

usually i rev up harshly building up to speed (i loathe dragging up to speed) from 0 to 20, 30 50kmh, whatever the speed limit is then i go cruise mode today was between 36 and up to 39 degrees Celsius pushed the car (2001y CDT automatic jatco) to 130kmh with switching AC on and off multiple times (sometimes it blow cold-ish, sometimes ambient warm, too much freon or not enough, yet to see) i suppose that did not help this not happening either

Erm, dont EVER run an engine without the crank pulley bolt in!! It also holds the timing chain pulley. If it was a floating pulley, or managed to come detached, you would have completely ruined the engine
