A dedicated gardener has spent more than 25 years and around £10,000 turning his back garden into an exotic JUNGLE. Green-fingered Tim Wilmot, 56, moved in to a new house just over two decades ago with his wife and two children. With almost a quarter of an acre of garden space Tim, a keen gardener, decided he wanted to transform in space into his own jungle. Now, 25 years on, he has cultivated a number of exotic plants, including a variety of palm trees and his own banana trees.

This video gave me so many ideas! Thank you. I've got the Rice Paper plant in tiny plug form at the moment, I can't wait for it to get this big! I've started vlogging the progress of my tiny tropical garden from day 1.

Not only are you growing beautiful tropical plants, buy your placement, design and effort is beautiful. I was searching for your instagram and I saw that you are a professional watercolor painter and teacher. Not any one can make a northern tropical garden look this good, it makes perfect sense that you are an artist. Such nice placement and flow, which sets you aside from the more typical Tropical gardener/collector.

I am in zone 6 in the US, and very jealous..... I can grow Musa Basjoo banana, and some hardy Agaves, and Yuccas with protection from extra rain. And with shelters and heat sources I can grow some palms, but, I wish I could do what you've done with your garden, it's all really lush and nice.

Very nice garden. I just started a tiki themed garden in my yard and I got a lot of ideas for accent plants from your video. Surprisingly, many of the tropical plants I have, including tree ferns, bird of paradise, banana trees, and various palm trees do quite well during the winter when the temperature dips to the mid thirties in the morning. No snow where I live and the temp. hardly ever reaches 32, or freezing. I get good results using Miracle Grow in the hose canister once every two weeks except in winter.

@Louise Rosier we do have clay mixed in with our soil and I’ll admit, I wish that I had prepped the soil before starting. I’m not really sure what the advice is but my best guess would be to cut it with lots of top soil and grit.There must be videos on KZbin about improving clay? I’m close to Swansea, and the plants seem to do very well here. X

Most of them are tropical plant, how Come they can grow in subtropical climate?
@RichardABW
@RichardABW 8 жыл бұрын
You've got to be picky. Some bananas like the ones in the video will grow in the uk fine but want wrapping up for winter. Other things go inside. Some of those palms are tough and no problem, originally come from high altitudes. The uk climate in many parts is pretty forgiving, our non continental position means our winters are ridiculously mild given out latitude.
@mysteriousgirl4438
@mysteriousgirl4438 5 жыл бұрын
I definitely wouldn’t call that climate sub tropical and none of those plants are true tropical plants except the banana but they are pretty hardy

This is beautiful, certainly, but I just dont understand why people put in so much money and effort trying to grow plants in an unnatural environment. Plant native plants people!! Support the beauty of your natural ecosystems!
@LukeArmitstead
@LukeArmitstead 3 жыл бұрын
At least! he is gardening and catching peoples attention with the natural world (I can promise you that birds and insects love his garden.) In relation to your comment, I see people rip out plants everyday to put in lawns. I also see much bias towards exotic plants just because they look different and call attention to themselves. A more traditional gardener would plant a non native Japanese maple and have many woodland Asian and American species and rarely get the criticism for only planting native. A lot of the species in his garden are quite adapted to the UK climate actually, and can educate people about plants from far away with similar climates, but may look a little foreign. Yes, native eco systems are amazing and need to be protected more than ever, but not everyone needs to do this in their gardens. To me, this garden screams, "plants are important and amazing!" This kind of enthusiasm about plants is needed in our world, for the average person could care less about gardening and nature. And yes, native climate adapted plants are important, you are right!
