I spread the soil fungi for grass - "endomycorrhizal" fungal spores - that stores the carbon and feeds the plants with nutrients and water.

I want to do this as a job Edit: wow I didn't expect so many likes! It warms my heart seeing so many people are passionate about growing forests! For anyone who's asking, no, I didn't get started yet, mainly because I don't have a backyard to practice on. I'm getting a degree in environmental sciences and then I'll probably get a master's in forest sciences. I also heard in south America, forgot which country but might me somewhere in the center like Bolivia, a couple restored single-handedly a forest which burned completely because of human unawareness. After 10 or something years the forest expanded from itself, animals started to come back. Not the small ones like foxes but bigger ones... Great story

The Internet Being an idiot about things, and making decisions based mainly on ideology, instead of the effects they have is still ENORMOUSLY idiotic. I am from Kerala, the southern most state of India. Here we had 'sacred groves' in almost every household which are like small forests. There will be idols of Serpent King inside the grove. Because people were so scared of the serpent God, no one dared to destroy these thick vegetation. These sacred groves were tiny forests where as mentioned here, not even a falling leaf was removed. Since almost every house had such a grove, the rain water seeped down, filling ponds and wells with good potable water. Of course many temples still have such groves. In the past two to three decades, all most all these sacred groves in the houses have been cleared due to rapid urbanisation, want of space for buiding new houses and also as many people have lost faith in all these traditions. Result : the water table level has gone down, there is water scarcity. The flora and fauna typical to the 'kavu' or sacred grove is lost. This year we had a never before flood too. Now the State Government is planning to build such sacred groves again, with the support of churches and temples.

One of the most engrossing, bewitching, and informative videos I have watched on KZbin. Even though Mr. Shubhendu Sharma is an engineer by profession, he has transformed himself into a forest generator. I live in a small forest, on top of a hill, myself; there are 155 trees in my yard, which is home to raccoons, squirrels , deer, rabbits and muskrats. but this system was developed by akira miyawaki..........this guy met miyawaki when he came to plant a forest at toyota factory where he was working. he volunteered to help and learnt from him. miyawaki planted his first forest in 1976 and it is over 40 years now - a real forest. check it out!!!

I have my own backyard forest. Stated with 1/3 acre of lawn, have been removing it by hand for years since I don't use chemicals. Right now I have quite a few fruit trees blooming, they are being spread by the birds, same as the raspberries. Many trees have shown up on their own, including the nitrogen fixing ones. I have almost every kind of fruits that can grow in very cold weather, since winters here can go to -65 F (-53.8 C). I started on my own when I was 60, 12 years ago. I also have an area for growing vegetables. It is a certified Wildlife Habit by the Wildlife Federation. It is located in the old section of a town of lawns. Lots of birds and other wildlife. A lot of work but worth it. You don't need a lot of money, I'm on Social Security. As to the photos by the guy talking you can bet that he started with fully grown trees to have they that high is just 2 years. Of course the people who give TED talks are not your regular every day folks.

This is so important... When I was a kid there were birds and insects everywhere, not any more. I used to see millions of starlings as a child, now we have none whatsoever. All it took was 35 years and they're all gone. And it's not just the starlings, it's all the birds... Bees are in dangerously sharp decline too. If we are not careful we are going to lose what we have forever. This needs to be made into a blueprint that others can follow worldwide to recreate your work. If you're the younger generation you don't realise what we have already lost, talk to the older people and see for yourself. If I knew how, I'd devote half my land to this project... I love trees/plants it fills me up to plant them and see them grow. 2 years ago I started a 4 acre food forest on some land I bought in SE Kansas...currently I have 140+ trees and countless perennial edibles....everything was planted via no dig (just pile soil/compost around the roots and cover with straw and viola) even my vegetable gardens which produce food that I give to the local food pantry...besides my love for our Creator, I've never been so in love! For me, there is nothing more rewarding than raising up a cedar tree from seed. Of the thousands of trees I have planted, given away or sold, I can go and visit them anytime I choose. Since I've been doing this for so many years, I'm rewarded with watching them grow and thrive. The ultimate reward is knowing that long after I'm gone, these trees will continue to grow and benifit nature in hundreds of ways. Started this as a stress reducer. It worked beyond any expectations I could have imagined. Go plant something. Teach a youngster how to plant and care for a tree. very, very rewarding!!

In my school, IES Los Castillos in Spain we are in the middle of a forest construction. This year, after 2 years of healing the soil, we are about to plant trees, some of which are resistant elms (Ulmus minor) to the Dutch disease. We are very excited about it. on a simpler scale, plant trees and shrubs that are hardy in your area. grab all your neighbors leaves every fall and cover the ground. throw all your kitchen scraps on the ground. learn which weeds you can eat - some taste very good (ie: lamb's quarters) that's what i did in my yard. bought cherry trees, plums, apple, some native flowering bushes. attracted lots of birds and some interesting native plants.

pre tree plant work involves tree section. Google might help for heights and location step 1. agitate soil step 2. plant trees step 3. water and weed for 2 years step 4. Wonder why you build a forest in your backyard in the first place. step 5. purchase chainsaw step 6. spend 2 days cutting it all down have a huge party and burn the evidence that you spent $4000 on. 😉

Lamb's quarters are edible weeds and there are so many others. I grow a variety called magenta spreen which has a beautiful magenta top, tasty, more nutritious than spinach, self-sowing (you need only to plant a few the first time and each successive year, you have more than enough). I recently dried them and powderized as my daily nutritional supplement. I also have a few collard trees which provide me greens all year round. Just wanted to share.

The company do offer online training and consultancy if your willing to spare the money for that. The beauty is it would only take one person in a country to share findings and share the knowledge, obviously the native trees and climates differ from country to country but there are a few steps you can see applied. For instance mixing biomass in the soil, they showed the success of a project in the Netherlands in another video by digging up the soil and introducing hay I believe, the soil was naturally high in clay content and trees tend to grow slowly so I believe this really sped up the process. The other thing to do is to try and limit competition, so not putting really tall canopy layer trees right beside one another but having your trees, sub layer trees and shrubs in between so they're not competing with one another.
