To kill off anything like your fig tree, trim it back as low as you can then cover the stump in old used oil (free from garages where they work on vehicles). It will smother and prevent the tree regrowing. Sometimes holes need to be drilled in the tree stump and oil poured into them to accelerate the process. Oil or plant killer with a lot of salt in it. There may be other ideas that are better. Best wishes from Australia.

Should take cuttings of your fig, so you don’t lose the variety. Stick them in water they will root and can be potted up later.

Nice to see you guys back was wondering where you were I had a question about your wall are you using a lime mortar to put the stones back up
@TheIndigoEscape Жыл бұрын
Hey Debora! Thank you, we will be publishing every week. For building up the walls Portland mortar is the one used which is essentially cement and sand. This is due to being more durable. As the walls will be later on rendered and pointed with lime, it will still allow the moisture to raise up and evaporate through the walls. The cement used is only for the beams, lintels and ring beams built in the future.
@arjanvogel6444 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, everyone would like to have a fig tree way don't you just dig it out and put it somewhere else in the garden, I hate it when people just distroi nature.
@I-am-not-a-number Жыл бұрын
What happens when you use Portland mortar on a stone wall?
@margaretlovelock7031 Жыл бұрын
It doesn’t breath and creates moisture, condensation. It’s all wrong.
@TheIndigoEscape Жыл бұрын
Hi Margaret, that’s not correct as there is no pointing done at the moment
@TheIndigoEscape Жыл бұрын
When it’s used to point or to render, it can create issues but that’s a lot more complicated than that. Another channel did an experiment telling what happens when you use cement which then needs to be really insulated as well as to no water to come in at all. We have no damp proof course so we will be using lime to render/pointing walls. What we are doing now is preparing an area for ring beams, beams and lintels. These are essentially done on top of concrete. This has nothing to do with the moisture retention/evaporation of a wall.

I hope you used lime and not cement. Cement gives a lot of trouble because the walls can't breath. The Portuguese stones collect water if you use cement. The water you can see in moisture walls with a lot of fungus inside the walls. Please do a kind of research if you don't believe me
@TheIndigoEscape Жыл бұрын
We are using the correct material because we are not plastering/pointing. For structural builds you need cement/concrete. The breathability of a wall happens perpendicular to a wall not on top. The moisture comes from the bottom and escapes by evaporation through the stones. We are adding cement to the top to be able to build lintels, beams and ring beams. All done with pourable concrete. This will not affect the side of the wall. As you need to have professionals to do what we are doing, we are being advice by engineers, architects and builders who are locals and have decades of experience in Portugal.
@margaretlovelock7031 Жыл бұрын
Why on earth are you using cement on stone walls when you should be using Lime in order to let the walls breath
@TheIndigoEscape Жыл бұрын
You use cement for structural work in any wall. You use lime to render or point the stone walls which allows walls with no damp proof course let our the moisture raising up from the ground to evaporate through crevices of the wall We aren’t rendering or pointing here, we are building on top of the stone wall and not blocking any crevices for it to not be able to breathe. Don’t worry, Simon knows exactly what he is doing. Not the first rodeo ☺️

Thats a good idea for later, for sure. This vine grows super quickly so we will be able to do that again in the future. Best to do that in October-Feb when plants are more likely to grow their roots than flowering.
