Cats in airport tip: Have your cats on a leash in case they make you take them out of the bags to pass security, that way it's safer if they panic and try to run away. Safe travels

This is such a fascinating renovation. Watching you take down decrepit stone walls, and then building new structures that are laced into existing stonewalls. Really captivating 😊

It's nice to see you tackling the renovation. Please don't get discourage, because it will be times you will wonder why you have "only done this so far". This project is long, hard work, and expensive even when you do the job. But you will have a home you all will love. Omar and Simon are pouring their heart and soul in this, and it's a privilege to watch. It's a labor of love and sweat. The best to you. Hugs from across the Atlantic. .

It's a pity to burn the wood, it can be used for raised beds, or put into the ground to feed the soil? ;)
@TheIndigoEscape
@TheIndigoEscape Жыл бұрын
oh no Gianni, it's really not that great the wood. We reuse as much as we can and try to get second hand stuff so we give everything a second chance. This wood however would have gone to dust in a year. You need something solid that you can treat or Shou Sugi Ban (and oil/wax) to last. However, the ashes will be used for the area where the future vegetable raise beds will be, making the soil lovely.

Why didn't you support the outer wall with large plywood walls to prevent leaning?? In The future shore up those walls and even perhaps remove a large section of the roof tiles but supporting the walls should work without removi g the roof tiles.
@TheIndigoEscape
@TheIndigoEscape Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! The roof tiles have to go because the structure beneath it is rotten and needs replacing with new wood. The walls are 50cm of limestone, heavy stuff. Some of the stones are 40x40cm, Plywood will not hold the wall at all. The leaning wall has been leaning since way before we moved in.

Did you have to get a permit for that?, and if so ,did it take long?
@TheIndigoEscape
@TheIndigoEscape Жыл бұрын
You do, yes. We found a local engineer who is in charge of all of that. It can take a while. We also have an architect. I wouldnt do anythign of our magnitude without professionals. If you are just renovating something small, maybe but our project is a big one. We did it in parts instead of a whole project because that takes far longer. You get a permit for a section, then you get a permit for a septic tank, then you get a permit for the roof, and so on. In smaller chunks, its easier for councils to deal with paperwork. The law is about to change in regards to renovations at the end of the month so maybe check on that before hand.

Lime mortar is the way forward guys... Stone and cement really really don't work symbiotically.😁 I cannot believe that you are wasting the tiles.. you would be amazed how many tiles you will need and when you try and go buy more to match you will be paying mega bucks.. that's why people look after their tiles, even when you think you have a shed load already. There is a premium price paid for them here. There is cheaper hardcore.. I am just cringing at the free resources that you are trashing. Thanks for the vlog.. sorry to sound so negative.. but bin there and done it.. and am on my third project with a bit more wisdom and obviously a little less cash. 😘 And burning good wood on a bonfire instead of chopping and keeping for the fire in the house?
@TheIndigoEscape
@TheIndigoEscape Жыл бұрын
Hi Abina, Thanks for your comment. We have answered already the cement question. We are not pointing at the moment. You cannot do structural work with lime mortar. We are preparting the surface for ring beams, beams and lintels. We are far far away from pointing/rendering walls. We aren't using all the tiles for hardcore as mentioned by Omar and are saving most of them for other projects. We wont use them on the roof because this roof was done badly, more than a decade ago and are not worth reusing. We talked to people who have done similar renovations here and said forget reusing them. We are not going to jeoperdise the integrity of our future home by romanticising tiles that won't do what they are supposed to do, keep water out. We have no woodburner and the wood, as explained several times as well is full of chemicals and super dusty. It will literally burn out in minutes. Not even good for a fireplace specially indoors to inhale terrible varnish and other wood treatments. I'm sure you are very knowledgable and I appreciate the concern but we have engineers, architects and local builders involved as legally required to do such extensive projects. We aren't doing a youtube show.

Why dont you remove the roof tiles first? It would make it much safer as well area her to remove the ribbing structure underneath. You're doing dangerous work and not even wearing a helmet. Please practice safety. You can't continue work on your home if you're dead. Even if you only get hurt, you can't work for weeks or months. Safety, safety, safety.
@TheIndigoEscape
@TheIndigoEscape Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I appreciate your worry about our safety The tiles were removed as needed. Sometimes it's easier to remove bit by bit . Sometimes you can't remove the tiles first due to things in the way. You are right though. we are trying to be careful but sometimes things do come down quickly! I'll tell Omar about the hats. 4-6 days of work are condensed into 20 minute videos. It looks like it's done quickly but careful consideration and discussion does happen (sometimes for hours) while we take things down.

@@TheIndigoEscape I just love you guys and don't want to see you get hurt. I work in the ER of a major trauma hospital and sadly and too often, by the time they get to us it's too late to save them. It's a good thing I'm not an OSHA agent, people would hate me LOL. But seriously a little more prep work could save not only hours of clean-up but most importantly save your life. May Almighty God keep you all safe and well😻📿📿📿. Thank you for hearing me.
