Great looking aircraft. As far as the oil samples, they will show the health of the engine and if any problems occur. We used them at my last job and it was helpful to track the condition of the engine. it will also show if you have bad bearings, fuel leakage into the crankcase as well as water in the oil. Keep the reports, they will be helpful for the next annual. Chris is aware of these reports and the usefulness of the reports. As mentioned before Chris is not only an excellent AME he is an excellent teacher who does not mind sharing his knowledge.

I owned a 1961 172 in late 1980's. As a A&P ad IA I did my own inspections. The plane had been stripped and painted 5 years earlier. During the annual with the flaps fully extended the flap balance cable rusted the length of one inch with only three wire strands the flap down. Stripper had gotten on the cable.

@@GlensHangar Don't worry about the autogas detractors. I personally run 75/25 mix of autogas/100LL in my 150hp O-320. Runs great, no fouling, and I save $1200-$1600 per year depending on the price difference for ~100 hrs on the tach per year. I can even run straight 87 if I want and all gas in Alaska is ethanol free, but I test every time to be sure. I'll basically save the price of an overhaul over 2000 hours.

@@ansonmoxness5403 That's what Chris says I could do - this engine was certified for 80/87 leaded, but that leaded gas had less lead (way less lead) than the 100 Low Lead available today and a 70/30 Mogas / 100LL mix gives about the same lead level as the old 80/87.

@GlensHangar2 жыл бұрын
Leaded fuels are horrible for humans and the environment, I think AvGas is maybe the last holdout of leaded fuel? A few municipal airports have banned it, and only sell unleaded MoGas, and JetA / JetB - which is a great step forward. But it leaves behind a lot of aircraft that can't legally burn anything but 100LL leaded fuel. Not everyone is going to pony up the almost $500 that I did to get a sticker that says unleaded is fine for my aircraft; regulations need to change and Ethanol free fuel needs to be available at every airport.

I've flown just about 20 hours in it so far - and never noticed any trouble with flight characteristics. Stall speeds, Vr, Vx, etc were all within book values; so even though Andre says the edge is wrong (he'd know; 50 years of aircraft sheet metal experience much of that in the RCAF) it must be within margins?

So I don't get it, what does the metal ring do then? Does the engine not need any actual modifications for using non ethanol unleaded automotive fuel and it's just a regulation and cost that governmental agencies levy on the aircraft owner? I mean, if so, I sorta get it, adding a one time (hopefully) tax to give you legal authorization to use fuel not originally intended for aircraft because it's taxed differently. Sorta like how kerosene that is dyed red isn't taxed to be used for auto fuel (it can be mixed with diesel to help with winter operation) so if checked and you have red dyed fuel in a diesel engine fuel tank you likely are doing a form of tax evasion.
@GlensHangar2 жыл бұрын
I'm not qualified to put it all down on paper in a great explanation - there are problems with the use of MoGas because of Ethanol, or not enough octane, or some engines need a small amount of lead (debated) for lubrication. Also additives in MoGas can cause vapour lock with some fuel systems, etc, etc. The metal ring just signifies that my engine / airframe combo has been tested and will work fine with Ethanol free MoGas with an octane above 90. It also signifies that I understand that I should use at least 30% 100LL to keep enough lead in my engine for lubrication, and that I understand that vapour lock could be an issue at certain altitude, temperature, power setting combos. The sticker on the panel is a reminder.
@Surestick882 жыл бұрын
It sounds silly to require a sticker but you know if there was no requirements someone would put mogas in a plane that wasn't compatible because they "heard from a friend it was fine".
@kbjerke2 жыл бұрын
Will you be running premium fuel, which contains no ethanol? That's what I use in all my air cooled engines.
@GlensHangar2 жыл бұрын
Yes - on occasion, when needed. I'll probably use 100LL AvGas 90% of the time, but there are a few airports in the North that don't have AvGas, and I'd need to get fuel in town from the auto station. So premium unleaded 91-94, and then test to make sure that there isn't any Ethanol. Based on when this engine was rebuilt and the parts put in - it doesn't need much if any lead, but it definitely can't have any Ethanol.

@@GlensHangar None of them “needs” lead. That’s a old myth. I’d rather not run with lead but 1) It’s in the partnership agreement to use AvGas. 2) It’s not so easy to haul the amounts you’d need to the airport. That lead causes plug fouling, can build up at the valve seats to cause problems and is why we have to use Dino oil and change it so often. If you run mogas you’ll avoid all those issues.
