They still had shotgun starter at local events when I bought my first boat in 1982. It was a 1978 Ranger tri hull with a 115 Mercury straight 6. Some V hulls with 150 were coming around by then. My Ranger got a lot better hole shot than most so my first tournament I got out in front of everyone for the first couple hundred yards and then everyone flew by, it was terrifying! I learned to hang back after that. I received my first BASS membership Christmas 1972, can’t wait for you to get to that issue!

Thank you, Mr. Clunn, for inspiring me as a 6 yr old boy, back in 1979, who had just caught his first bass. Thank you for your continued inspiration to me as a modern competitive angler fishing national-level events. Thank you also, for your future inspiration to me as a thinking man, human being, and a man who appreciates nature, and all those who made this sport what it became at it's peak. Bless you, Rick Clunn. You are a living legend.

Had a friend still fishing out of one those boat in the 80s. As small as those boat were ,they were very heavy. Another great episode. Don't forget most people sat down and fished in those days.

I’m really enjoying your series of “back in time” videos. Wonderful insight on the beginnings of the sport. The BM Elmo cartoons with all the computers and tech in the boat was quite prophetic. BTW… the 8422 Elrod home is still there, just next to the little Berry creek. On the corner of Garland. Near Pasadena.

Mr Clunn, you are truly my biggest, uh "hero", for lack of a better fitting term. You did a podcast with Mercer a year or two ago, where you talked about quantum physics, and how the laws of such effectively apply to day to day life, and if you happen to see this, I would like you to know that that might just be the most important morsel of knowledge that I've ever heard in my life, and keeping it in my mind day to day has changed the trajectory of my life drastically for the better. So thank you, and congratulations on your extensive career and retirement, and I really hope to get to meet you someday.

Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make this video and mention Elroy Krueger and his spinnerbait skills. I sure would like to listen to anything that you have about Elroy related spinnerbait stuff. I still remember I would visit him almost every weekend at his shop in universal City and his shop in Callahan down at choke Canyon. I was fortunate enough to talk to him every time I was down there at choke Canyon. He would share little things with me like his recipe for neon gold skirt for his spinner bait that was made with luma flex material. I still remember a time when he told me you need to grab a bag of a hundred of these worms. They were plum chartreuse laminate. He said it was because bass were feeding on dragonflies that look like that color. Again. Wanted to say thank you for the video. Would like to see you make a tutorial video on spinnerbaits on what makes a great spinnerbait. It's a lost art. I still throw it looking forward to hoping that you make a video on spinnerbaits again. Thanks!

Yes, Rick once said Elroy was the best spinnerbait fisherman ever. There are a few short videos on KZbin with Rick talking about spinnerbaits, and one that's over 16 minutes long entitled "Rick Clunn Spinnerbait Seminar" which was shot in 2011 in southern California, but yes, more spinnerbait videos by Rick would be welcomed!

I joined B.A.S.S. back in 1976 when I started fishing in bass clubs. BASS was mostly responsible for lots of my tournament wins. Followed Rick Clunn for many years on the Bassmaster Trail. I remember him being billed as Mr. October back then when the Classics were held in October. I also knew Elroy Krueger Rick was talking about. R.I.P. Elroy! ❤

There was a cartoon editorial in an early Bassmaster that predicted forward facing sonar. The neat thing about the editorial was for anglers using this new technology in tournaments, the anglers were limited to only 100 casts per day. This rule could work today.

So rebel boats were owned and ran by Rebbel bait Company which made the rebel Minnow back then I am a little bit of a nerd about this. I have a wonderful day, Rick.
@MarshallLanierСағат бұрын
Those Rebel boats were manufactured by PRADCO, the same company that made the Rebel minnows. I remember saving my hay baling money and buying several Rebel minnows in the early 70s, and on the back of the box the lures came in was a blueprint of the Rebel boat.
