Great book, written by two great authors! I first began learning of Kep, after reading, Our Southern Highlanders. What a wonderful read.

I loved finding out who Charlie's Bunyon is named after! Great book. And thank goodness for George, Elizabeth has been patient with his interest in Horace for so many years. I count my email friendship with her one of the most enigmatically wonderful stories of my life.

Horace Kephart was my mom's great uncle..... I grew up hearing about him, and how he fled to the mountains and lived on the mountain bc of his horrible temper.. My mom said they call is the "Kephart curse." Its crazy to see this... But if he was anything like my mom, he did his family a big favor... Just sayin

Always been torn on Kephart. For all the cool things he did, there's the troubling fact that by embracing, encouraging and spearheading the Federal takeover of state lands, Kephart made sure nobody after him would be able to enjoy those same wilds. Always seemed rather selfish of him to me.

What are you talking about millions of people from all over the country get to enjoy the smokies because of people like kephart. As far as a federal takeover thank God they did it or the state would have sold it all off to private developers and timber interests. Thank God for the national park. You better read your history.
