The Voyage of Lydia

The Voyage of Lydia

Күн бұрын

I'm Joe, and I'm swapping the fast-paced and chaotic existence of a university student for life afloat onboard a narrowboat on the UK canals and rivers.
After dropping my phone in the water and being cut off from the world for several days, I get back on the road and take a short hop from Wolseley Bridge to Great Haywood. I get through two locks and take a minute or two to chat about lonliness, something I and I think a lot of solo boaters sometimes battle with. Also features bin bag throwing and toilet emptying.

So difficult for mam and dad to watch this one as we also struggled with the situation, just glad we could whatsapp on a computer each evening. However a few challenges later saw you up and running again to continue this adventure with resolve and determination 👏 So proud of you ❤😊

I think it's a good thing to talk about. You've also come through a flurry of activity and excitement over the new boat, packing up, starting a new job, and now there's a let-down of sorts. At least you're in touch with how you feel about it, and once you've reached your new area you'll be able to see how it all settles out with co-workers and the local community.

Definitely a worthwhile topic to consider and bring awareness of to the wider community. Boating isn't always Tim and Pru and canalside pubs. For people struggling there is a network of waterways chaplains who can offer support and advice. Thanks for raising the issue. Having experienced it before you will have a degree of resilience. You do have a support from family and friends and now you are part of the boater community. Most of us are always up for lending a hand or putting the kettle on.

It definitely isn't always that idealistic! That's something I want to try and capture, a fool bumbling his way through boating 😆😆 It's great to know there's folks out there that are on hand and willing to help out!

It sounds heavenly to me. I absolutely love my own company and I have lots of hobbies to keep me busy. My mum was the same after my dad died, and my sister too. Unfortunately I am NEVER alone since my husband retired. He has no hobbies and just sits in front of the TV all day every day, but he doesn't like me going out alone, he always wants to come with me. He is partially disabled so there are things he can't do. I can honestly say that since he retired 8 years ago I have never been in our house alone except for twice when he was in hospital. It drives me crazy😔.

You just described my parents life exactly, except they beat you to it by 20 years. I don't think my dad left the house once after he retired without demanding my mom accompany him. When he passed it left my mom a bit direction less and lacking decisiveness. Not a whole human, but half a couple. Part of the reason I never got married, I am 54 and have spent 90% of my life living alone, and I love every minute of it. My only worry if I moved onto a narrow boat alone would be are the canals too busy for me?

You have almosr 3000 followers! I understand what you're saying and its nice you wish to alert others to it. However, for you, your peace of mind in beibg alone will come with advancibg years. I used to be scared of being alone but following some experiences and working through them solitude became my peace! You're young ( not wishing to be condescending) your experiences at school still fresh in your mind as that is all you can reflect on but as you advanxe now you will have many different experiences to refer to other events and so your life and the events throughout it will be subject to so many changing experieces andcyour perception of them. You're a lovely young man - never forge that - and donit all with a smile and one daybyou will reallise itbis something you need every so often! X

Loneliness can be one of the greatest fears for human. I have this fear and I think it’s one of my greatest, but from my years of experience, there is always someone you can talk to about it. There is someone you can cry to, laugh to and chat to. It’s why I cherish my friendship with Joe as he was around when I was going through a tough break up and he helped me get through it. And I hope he knows that he’s always in my thoughts, especially when he’s on his voyages! P.s also sorry im late to the party! I’ve had a busy couple of week 😂

Point is for two years he's done nothing much but spent time on social media watching political channels doesn't like main media, has no friends, won't join men with sheds and had mini stroke 6 months after he retired but has lost interest in stuff and he says he's not depressed but I think otherwise but can't convince him. Being alone does not have to be lonely, too many people think that being alone must equal lonely. Talk to people you meet, get a dog, stay in contact with friends, be friendly yourself. Even 5 minutes with someone is contact, contrary to what social media projects, you don’t need numerous friends to have community! Yes humans are basically social beings , but you don’t need a large group to be social.

I have had no friends around me for the last 25 years as my only friend passed away and the mother of my daughter "found someone else " My brother doesn't bother with me and my daughter has her own life to live. Im at a loss as i haven't the confidence to go out and meet other people. Its s horrible way to live but unfortunately theres so many people going through lonely times. Please make sure you have contact with people as much as possible as its important, not only for your mental well-being but also your physical too. Good luck with the new job and safe travels.

Think how much you have learnt already in such a short space of time. You have a lot to be proud about. Be careful getting a pet as they do tie you down and they are a commitment - especially a dog. Yes, they give you so much but you have to be fair to them and give them time. Give yourself time to settle into your new life in Cheshire before you go down that road. With work you will make lots of friends and your life will become very busy. We have met lots of solo boaters when we have been on the canals and we can see it is tough - not just physically, but not being able to share adds to that feeling of loneliness. You have already experienced the comradery of marina life and there is great support amongst the boaters. Very much enjoying your vlogs.
