So glad you’re back. I miss the top class prototyping and engineering and your (approved) OCD. Having trouble finding your genuine Insta account. Good luck with the rest of the build and thank you. David

You and your build reignited my enthusiasm and passion for my build (94 Honda Integra), I’m loving this build series and your video style - I also appreciate that you show your thought processes and talk about small ‘mistakes’ and explain how you overcome challenges.

Tip for when you glue the ends in the carbon tube, make sure its not a tight fit. You want some clearance for the glue. If you are printing the ends you can make some small tabs around the circumference that align it but the rest has clearance for the glue.

Great stuff. Love the concept. Maybe see if you can make the brackets support closer to the bearing housing and perhaps double clamp on the dash bar adding in some additional triangulation. Like both your prototypes combined with a web of sorts. Really like your ideas for mock up 😎
@alexmat1062 жыл бұрын
Awesome job so far but I don't like the steering column support braces. Even in aluminium it seems like it will flex because they are long and with little "structure". Maybe some extra webbing would help and even more lateral angle. Then the carbon tube has still a long overhang past the bracket which isn't supported and will probably flex. Maybe you could extend the collar that attaches the column to the bracket? That's my 2 cents from my Eyeballing-FEA 😅

That is exactly the same way I use the 3D printer aswell in my Garage. Prove the concept in cheap plastic before making/ordering parts in metal.

Hey man! I just wanna say that the way you are letting us viewers follow your train of thoughts, through out your different innovative solutions and the way you are piecing these videos together, is just awesome! It's really inspiering for me to watch these episodes. It's wierd to me you have'nt got more subs and views at this point. But I'm also convinced that if you keep this up and bring us along when the car is raceworthy on the tracks, this channel will sooner or later for sure take off! I'm also a bit curious of what you do as a profession..?

Just a thought. Typically, the lower side of steering columns (portion consisting of universal joint at the steering rack up to the universal joint at the end of the steering column) integrates a collapsible portion. On your Porsche steering column you’ll notice it’s and outer tube and inner tube that appears to be splined. In a front end collision where the steering rack gets pushed towards the cabin, this portion collapses instead of pushing the steering column up into the cabin. I do not think the lower portion will “flop over” like you’re imagining and explaining it will with your design. What if the front end collision actually “aligns” the two universal joints and they cannot flop over? It has no option but to force the column into the cabin
@islandworks2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. My Boxster has the collapsible portion integrated whereas the 964 does not originally. From the recommendation I’ve gotten it says that if the combined angle is large enough then it is not considered to be able to propagate the collision. If I’m not mistaken the guidance was 45 degrees.
@KevinLopez-pt2rs2 жыл бұрын
Fair enough, figured I’d raise the concern. Sounds like you’ve thought it through. It also occurred to me you’ll be fully harnessed in, so you won’t move forward in a collision into the steering wheel like a standard three point belt. So the concern is even less.

Steering mount looks like it needs an X brace in the near horizontal plane, to resist the side to side loads?
@islandworks2 жыл бұрын
They would benefit from that and also from just moving the sides out like I did. I think the biggest deficiency right now is the material.

please be very careful using aluminium UJ's, from experience I do not like relying on screws to retain them to the shaft (i have had two failures), i see that they have a lock nut which is good, but make sure you also use thread lock, personally i would want steel so they can be welded
@islandworks2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input. The original ones on the 964 are aluminum which is why I picked that. What’s you concern? I plan to drill where the lock screws go in to recess them as per the recommendations I got.
@daboy12s2 жыл бұрын
@@islandworks my concern is that the screws can work loose, as mentioned I have had 2 failures, are the standard 964 ones grub screw or clamp?
