Meadows was one of the few old school bodybuilders/coaches who trained in alignment with the modern science, long before we even had the science. While nearly all the others were focusing on the contraction/flexion of the muscle, Meadows was rightfully prioritizing the stretch. His programming was also top tier: an isolation warmup, a compound strength lift using progressive overload, long-length exercise for maximizing muscle damage, metabolic stress movement to “chase the pump”, and somewhere an intensity technique thrown in to extend the final set while maintaining a high SFR.

What other old school bodybuilders come to mind when you say their training style aligns with science?

@@alexbeyond99 well I can find elements in most of them that would fit this but Id argue Meadows prob the most aligned that Ive seen.

I'd agree with this. Any time someone shows me a "new" trick or technique that's worthwhile, it's something based in science...and something you can 100% bet is covered in one of John's videos. To the point that it's uncanny.

Ivana has such an incredible frame, she is HUGE yet her curves have a beautiful feminine look. She is the ideal IMO for a female bodybuilder, I guess the judges dissagree. The judges want women with striations on their chest like Andreas Munzer, vascularity like Paul Dillet and skin like Dorian Yates.

The resistance provided by the chain is the wrong way round. When the muscle is long its at its strongest but the resistance provided by the chain is at its minimum and when the muscle is at its shortest its weaker but the resistance provided by the chain is at the maximum. The above is really basic stuff and will be obvious to anybody why gives it some thought. Arthur Jones worked it out 50 years ago
@eddiegrant58
@eddiegrant58 8 ай бұрын
Making it harder at the top isn't "wrong" it's just a different type of stimulus. The fact that it's easier at the bottom is precisely what allows you to yank it up for an overloaded contraction at the top which you wouldn't ordinarily be able to achieve.
@andypicken7848

eddiegrant83 The resistance curve does not match the strenth curve. Infact its the wrong way round. You can call it a different stimulus if you like but you cannot change the bodies physiology or the physics of the exercise

@@andypicken7848 You can talk about the resistance curve not matching the strength curve if you like. But it doesn't have to. Here is the physics and physiology behind the exercise: it challenges the back muscles extra at the top so that you develop more strength in the top portion of the lift.
@eddiegrant58
@eddiegrant58 8 ай бұрын
@@andypicken7848 It doesn't matter that the resistance curve does not match the strength curve. I'm pretty sure these two are aware that with the chain it's much easier at the bottom. Forget about how easy it is at the bottom. This exercise is specifically designed to overload the muscles at the top of the lift as you approach peak contraction. John would always do separate back exercises which emphasised the stretched portion.

If you’re doing face pulls, you’re probably doing them too heavy. If you have to heave your reps then you spread the tension throughout the back and fail to target the upper back muscles. And by going lighter you can in increase the frequency and can do them 3 times a week or more if you want.
@thunkjunk
@thunkjunk 8 ай бұрын
Thanks. Yes, I'm going light so I can get the contraction with those muscles without incorporating help from other muscles. I'll start doing more facepulls though. You know of any other moves which work those lower lats? @@CankleCankle
