12yrs ago i was hired as a welder at a small caterpillar plant in ne iowa. I came in and got right to work learning every weldment i could. Fast forward about a yr and they pull everyone in our meeting room and tell us they are gonna expand and need to hire 30 more welders but they were having problems finding welders that could pass their computer test so they can get an interview. I tell them that we are in ne iowa and not many people went to college but there were people that if given the chance would blow their socks off. They ended up taking some of the advice and hired a small group of welders and just dropped them on the floor and said heres ur welder have at it. After watching this happen and seeing guys quit because they didnt know what to do, i stepped up and told the new hires if they had any problems that i would help. Fast forward again a few months and they hired an outside weld instructor to take guys off the street and train em up and get em ready to just walk on the floor and perform at company standards and also be able to read metric prints. That didnt work out so hot and we lost all but like 1 of the trainees. Then they say they r gonna start a new shift and asked all the senior welder if any of them would go to 2nd and train the new welders, no one stepped up to do it. So i get asked to do it with the promise of becoming the team lead on that shift. I accepted and went straight to work. I was given 1 to start and the following week i was given 5 more. A few weeks later and i got 3 more. I taught each one of them how to transitions welds from multiple passes down to a single or double showing. Taught them how to read every blueprint we had and would hold 20min print reading lessons a few nights a week. Now at this point my team is running flawlessly and im running around like mad man every nite training and still doing my own production. Thing kept getting bigger and bigger till i was running 2 building full of welders, burn tables, break presses and a blast booth. I was put in charge of the entire shift for 2 weeks while the supervisor was in kansas at our sister plant for training. During that time i made sure there were no issues between either shifts and if there were i mediated between shifts and fixed the issues. Fast forward a few more months and the company says its time to pick a team lead so i apply thinkn its a lock. The day comes that they r going to announce the new team lead and im gettn Is congratulated by everybody on both shifts. As the nite went on and im doin my thing it gets to last break and my supervisor pulls me to the side and says Dan im sorry but i went with someone else who has more leadership experience. Im very sorry. I was crushed beyond belief. The next words out of his mouth were and i quote, i need you to train the new team lead and get him up to speed. I laughed and told him to get fucked and i would never train another person while i was there. After that they threathened to take pay away made me work on weldments that took 2 guys but wanted me to out out 2 peoples worth of production a nite. Also when i took my very 1st family vacation, this was before they announced the team lead, i would recieve phone calls multiple times a night asking how to weld something or how ti fix something because i was the only person who knew how. I was forced out medically in may of 2013 due to injuries i recieved while in service to my country. 1.5-2yrs later that plant closed its doors and 50 welders lost their jobs

Brother, I've BTDT myself. As a Disabled Veteran, my employer would promise raises as things got better and those with less seniority and less skill got raises because they would kiss the bosses butt. I would just keep my head down and do MY job and help the new guys if they asked. But every time I asked for a raise I was told there wasn't any money yet the whiners bragged about getting raises when they thought I couldn't hear them. Well, one Friday afternoon near the end of the day I got called into the office and they asked me for my company keys and ID badge and I was told they didn't have enough work and I was being let go. Sad thing is they had to hire two guys at much less than they paid me and they weren't able to do the jobs I did anyway as I found out through the grapevine. The company is struggling and frankly, IDGAF and hope they close the doors. As for me, I ended up taking my military Disability check and Social Security permanent disability and I make more now than when I was working. Talk about Karma. Good Luck to you, Brother.

I had a similar agreement with a machine shop owner; we were trying to turn it into a machine shop design-build company. He owned the shop, and I am a P.E. tooling engineer. We had a profit share agreement, which seemed on paper to be a great deal. After 5 months I realized he was scamming me and I walked. I got almost nothing, but i'm glad i cut my losses. There is a lot of scum in this industry, best option is just to avoid it as much as possible.

I have over 40 years experience in the manufacturing industry. I found that designing parts, fixtures, working with machines and making parts is all very rewarding and predictable. Working with like-minded, decent, enthusiastic people is empowering, inspiring and fun. But, in every barrel you'll find one or two bad apples - bad apples can spoil the whole barrel. The only thing you can control is your own actions . . . and look where you are now - you obviously made the right choices.

In the early 2000’s my dad was in ICU, wasn’t expected to live so i was taking off work at the machine shop to stay by his side because we were very very close. So on the 2nd day of me being off, the supervisor calls me while im sitting at my dad’s bedside, the supervisor asks well how is your dad doing? I said well not good, i Don’t think he is going to make it. So the supervisor says well I’m going to have to lay you off, yep on the phone he is laying me off. Relatable. I've put in the blood, sweat and tears, had the sleepless nights, the 10+ days working straight, being on call 24x7 for years, administering VPN concentrators so others could work remotely while I could only use them in addition to 40+ hours at a desk, making other people lots of money while they treated me like dirt, even when dangling the carrot of "maybe I'll hand this business over to you." I'm not sure how to get past this burn out and cynicism anymore. I've seen what goes inside the sausage at Fortune 1 to Fortune 25 and so much of it is predicated on human rights abuses. That isn't how I want to run a business. I don't want to facilitate businesses like that. I think most of those at the top of the pyramid of capitalism should be regulated or litigated out of existence. I still work on things that I think are a benefit to others as well as myself, but getting paid and having a work life balance while not acting as an enabler for the most unethical robber barons on Earth? I haven't figured that out, but I want to, desperately.

This reminds me of the story in Genesis when Jacob had to work for seven years for his Uncle Laban to wed Rachel, only to get a bait and switch and given Leah instead, and be required to work yet another seven years to get Rachel. Then Laban tried to cheat Jacob out of his share of the goats that he raised successfully. The the product may change, from raising goats to parts produced by CNC machines, but human nature is still in the stone age when a guy like this boss breaks his promises and profits off his skills and knowledge. I'm impressed by Titan's restraint at the dinner with the boss( At a casino, where food is inexpensive to bring in gamblers? What a cheapskate the boss was!). I'm not sure what the advantages would really be. On the one hand, the heat created by friction trivially overwhelms the temperature difference from room temp to 0 C, so you're still going to need cooling and lubrication, whose viscosity could be affected by the temperature drop. On the other hand, there's some steels whose DBTT is around 0 C, so it becomes a very different material to work on.

Generally no, but on newer machines with tool setters and probes you can program in what is called “ macro variables “ which is a much more technically understanding of code. Which can touch off tools to check for wear whenever you want in the program, update , and or alarm out if it’s out of tolerance. But most machines can’t do this if they are older and or shops don’t let you do this thinking it’s a “waste of time” from my experience. But it’s gold if you learn that after the basics

Perhaps its your selection of jobs/clients, your general attitude, your execution on quality or deadline... We're left with a foggy picture because we're only getting one side of the story. In the vast amount of crises you've encountered there is one common element; it's you. and I think that factor is being overlooked.

You barked and he bit. You threatened to leave him first. You were also a bit naïve. You also quit before the new company could have hooked you up. You were an employee- be it probably a great one, but one who was making demands the OWNER simply did not agree to so he strung you along. It happens every day. Next time, get a more binding contract that a real lawyer reviews and build in outs where if something like this happens, you still get paid. His request to have you slowly transition over 1 year at low pay was a huge red flag. Also, I don't know, bad mouthing and trashing the guy who gave you your start isn't a good look to future customers. In the future will you make a negative video about customers who you interprets did wrong by you? Just do you- do good work and good $$$ will follow- period. Trashing people gets views I suppose which is what most care about these days There are always TWO sides to every story. You were an employee. He valued you but wasn't about to give you HIS business or meet your "or else" demands. I'm sure he hooked you up in other ways you left out (days off, bonuses, etc.) He probably did set you up to be a manager at the new company but you bailed. You should have stuck around during the transition to see how it went and negotiate a solid contract. Before you come down on me, understand that I really don't have a dog in this fight, nor do I really care about you or him. This is simply how it is. Deal with it- or not.

I double checked and ya sounds like you never signed a contract with this guy to garentee that transition into you become the president of the company and him being able to retire so when he sold the company like he did the only person to blame is really you. The owner probably got an irrefusable offer for the company that would of gave him way more money than any checks you'd be sending him so ya he sold the company you being there or not is literally not his concern anymore and all you did was just throw away a top level position, now did you turn it around? Ya as we can all see but don't kid yourself by saying this guy screwed you, you only screwed yourself by not putting this agreement down on some legal documents.

Also really strange to be saying that this is your only shot to own a company when 1. You already said you wouldn't be owning it 2. A company making the kind of production you are talking about is probably paying you close to 6 figures so you can just take that money save it up and pay for you own company after the 4 years if you were actually working for broke at that production level again you are only fucking yourself over. Edit: a 3rd also I don't think you give notice for contract work lol you just don't sign the next contract if he was near the end of that 4 year contract there is no notice to give you just say well I'm not signing that new contract I'm just leaving once it's done.
