Back to basics | how to draw the cue ball

Of course 100% correct. I learned the difference by playing middle to long stop shots as slow and low on the cueball as possible. The correct draw happens by accident then, because you do not stress yourself by having to draw and can focus on the right things.

Thank you. Aiming as low as you do, I’m sometimes prone to scooping. Watching you, I was reminded that only the “top edge” of the cue tip is actually affecting the cue ball. Smoothness and follow through with the tip placement is what I must focus upon. I usually aim a little higher and try to force things to happen. I think that I’ve been thinking of the center point of the cue tip when aiming which makes me aim higher. Forcing things has made me more unpredictable -tightening grip, punching, etc. A smooth beginning reaps a smooth ending. I’d try to explain more, but I think all will get the gist of my comment. Aiming lower will allow me to relax and achieve more. Trust my fundamentals

Great pointers Darren! I've gotten a lot better at these shot over time and with lots of practice. I think the hardest thing for me at the moment is remembering to keep things relaxed and smooth when I'm trying to shoot a power draw shot. Let's say the cue ball is about 2/3 of the table away from the object ball and I want to pull it back to where my bridge hand is or all the way back to an end rail. It's such a paradox to wrap your mind around because you know that you have to put some power in the shot but you still have to make sure you're not squeezing the cue too hard and tensing up while executing it. That being said, I do find that the shots that I hit the best feel like less effort is going in to them as opposed to more effort to get that cue ball spinning back towards me. Keep up all the awesome work you're doing and thank you for sharing your knowledge!

You don’t really need to hit the cueball harder when most distance unless trying to get the cueball to go crazy distance , for the power draw I explain on my previous video how and where to hold the cue at the end of the video … Or just have your a hand a touch further away from cueball than normal and you will be able to create a slightly longer back swing ..

Hi Darren, thank you for your great videos which I enjoy watching and practicing often. One request to you. I understand that this video shows how to draw the cue ball for the case that the distance of the cue ball and the object ball is quite near. Can you also make a video showing how you draw the cue ball when the cue ball and the object ball is quite far. When the distance between two balls is not close, then it can happen easiliy a miss cue if you need to hit the cue ball harder and aim as low as possible. Thanks for your reply. All the best.

You don’t really need to hit the cueball harder when most distance unless trying to get the cueball to go crazy distance , for the power draw I explain on my previous video how and where to hold the cue at the end of the video … If more distance just slightly bring the cue back a touch further than normal the bsck stroke and your hand a touch further away from cueball..

I find that when drawing the ball, keeping a loose grip helps but the problem I have is that although the cue comes back my stroke is no longer straight and I end up missing a straight draw shot. Any tips on how to get a clean straight stroke? Maybe get your buddy Chris melling to give some pointers on how he developed his stroke? I love his stroke the most tbh

As you habe to start somewhere… For me it was two things: No Space between cue and the gap between thumb and Index. I practically hold the cue with

…gap between. Second thing was, to pull the cue back all the way to the bridge. That helped me.

Darren can you explain how to do a big draw with left/right english when the cueball is about 6 inches from the rail, I find when I try to do the big draw when hitting low, I jump the cue ball. Now I jack up the cue and hit higher on the cueball but I don't know if this is the right way as I am actually hitting a masse shot kind of which makes me miss the shot sometimes. What is the professional way?

Hello Darren, most coaches teach you keep the cue as parallel as possible to the table but I see pro´s like Earl and SVB raise their bridgehand quite a lot hitting down on the cue ball when drawing it. What do you think? Cheers

Not a fan of it but everyone as there own style but if not on the game I think shows up more and need to practice so much to keep it in tune imo !! But they done ok haha

This is kinda easy you should try doing it at least 5 diamonds distance and you can teach us how to bring it back that easy

Maybe But like I said I teach amateurs of all levels and 90% of you do it wrong so it can’t be that easy .. but yes I do about 10 each then bring the cueball back a diamond and the object ball a diamond further away and so on then you will learn about your stroke and timing

What I see more than anything is his bridge hand very low, not a tri-pod finger straight up grip.
