Neal, it amazes me how you can see how the project has to go from start to finish, you have the whole thing planned out with every minute detail before you even begin, what a great talent to have that oversight to see the whole project before you even pick up the drill. Congrats on the installation of the winches, they are beautiful. Hope that makes putting up that sail so much easier!

Great work guys. Well the new Harken you are choosing are suboptimal. These chrome plated rope guides are cheapest thin metal stuff and frequently bend and destroy the plastic underneath it, every time 90Euro for the metal and 50 for the plastic underneath...2 of my buddy boats had them and after spending each >500Euro on these rope guides they replaced them with good old used model which have casted brass rope guides that are bassically indistructable.

For the future, you can just grind a 1/8 inch off those bolts for the barrel nuts to fit so you don't need the washers.

As he said in the video though, he actually likes having the washer on there because it helps spread the load of the nut over a wider area on the backing plate.

You call them barrel nuts. In the Ornamental Architectural fabrication industry, we call the barrel nut & bolt set, sex bolts. If you type that into the McMaster-Carr search box, barrel nuts will come up. I think it must be a widely used slang term.

I'm guessing, because you never mentioned, that the curvature of you boat kept the backer-plates 100% flush.. otherwise would it have not been better to place that butyl tape to the complete top plate. Or does that tape not work on flat surfaces like that! I understand the squish/seal, at the bolts, but curious if it works on 2 flat surfaces too. Or do you caulk around the top plate? Oh, and personally, I'd have drilled maybe 2 or 3 pilot holes using that top plate (small bore) then put that bag up inside using those small holes as guides.. very little clean up, spot on bag placement!

I was a little concerned about the placement, I’m hoping that the winches are far enough aft that you can comfortably grind them. It can be awkward if they’re set too far from the edge of the deck. Oh, and it’s “backing plate”.
@bkfitz
@bkfitz 10 ай бұрын
I'm curious why you decided not to over drill those holes and then fill with epoxy before re-drilling so that any water penetration doesn't get into the core.
@genewaddlerandomstuff2122

That's why he sealed around the holes with butyl sealing tape. I'm guessing that above the water line, what you're suggesting just wouldn't be necessary.

DFD is for cored material that is susceptible to decay. Basik has a polypropylene core and is not necessary. With the exception of holes below the waterline were it doesn't hurt to go that extra mile.
