Subscribe to OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:bit.ly/2nrYf24
Wow, this was crazy lol I cheated and had a buddy deliver us some wood chips for the BACK TO EDEN garden we are installing. They sent out a huge 18 wheeler full of wood chips and wouldn't you know it, the truck gets stuck. We tried to pull it with a tractor but that was a no go. Next up was a tow truck that tows 18 wheelers, say what? So we had 2 big semi trucks behind our log home lol now that is a first.
Hope you enjoyed the story =)

About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

Thank You My Homies ! :-) Dang ...sounds Like one Crazy Day around there ! It is funny you talking about the tape and print on the boxes. Last year when we Experimented in a new area and used boxes we spent a lot of time cutting and pulling all the PLASTIC tape off and cutting all the print off because we thought the same thing. This year I am with you on the burning and then smothering with Mulch. Another Wonderful Video My friends !!!

Totally agree on the cardboard comment. I have an organic orchard and would never use it there. I am amazed how many people complain about a truck creating ruts on their land and the work they have to do to repair it. Well, that is where they directed the truck to go at the trucks expense and time. That truck you showed got stuck because you directed him to go there. It was your fault he had to use up favors from his friends and your fault he had to pay the tow truck to pull him out. You should have shared the cost of that or paid it in full as it was your direction that caused all of this. Anyway, not hating you, just observing. Keep doing all the amazing things you do with the earth. There aren't enough of us on this planet.

Doug, I have to say, you couldn't make up a story like that and that's what is so challenging and interesting about our "real life" dramas. I put 7 acres of my little "homestead" into a set aside program which involved taking some land out of "production" and using it for other purposes. In my case, this land was not good for farming or pasturing because it had a low drainage area running diagonally down the middle, and was laid out in such a fashion that it was almost impossible to maneuver equipment around in it. So the forestry dept. sponsored this project for me and they brought in 5000 seedlings consisting of Eastern White Pine for the high ground and for windbreaks, Bald Cypress for the drainage ditch, a variety of species classified as "Wildlife Mast" including Wild Cherry, Walnut, Pecan, a few different varieties of Oaks, and some other seedlings to encourage bird habitat, nest areas, and cover for deer and larger animals. BTW, this was in SoIL so you may be able to do the same thing if you have land that is just sitting there. I'll bet that MO has a similar program. Long story short, I battled the rabbits for 2 years on the hardwood and nut seedlings with them nipping off each year's new growth for me. There were approx. 1500 of these seedlings so it was impractical to put mesh or chicken wire around each one so I took measures to "thin" the rabbit herd. It all went to help with a neighbor who had an exotic species license to raise deer, elk, and 2 breeds of exotic small cats, ocelots and margays. I would mulch most of my trees with the same type of mulch you have to work with only I paid 50 bucks a dump truck load for 3 to 5 loads a year! I finally got the rabbit population sort of in a type of manageable balance and the trees began to thrive. I sold my farm to move my business down to FL 10 years later and never got to enjoy the "woods" I planted back in 1980 but I still go on Google Earth and zero in on my old "homestead" to see how they have grown through the years.

Doug you could always go old school and plow and disk the garden before adding the mulch. This would stop the growing weeds/grass. Does not help the seeds though. But once you get a thick layer of mulch down it should stop the majority. I know BTE gardening is a no-till operation but the first time it would prep the soil very well.

I prefer mulch anyway. Just because it is already on it's way to being compost. It takes a very long time for wood chips to break down. I agree with you on the cardboard idea. Hope your yard isn't torn up too bad.

The moving axles adjust "bridge" which is necessary in some states as they have "bridge weight restrictions" so the weight has to be transferred around to spread it out while crossing bridges, etc.

I used to sell paper and packaging. I visited a couple 'box factories', they use wood chips from pines in the south ...groundup and lay on a screen and 'matted' together.... Now recycling paper plants may do it different now.... but the plain old brown boxes aren't chemically treated... compared to straw/hay which has chemical fertilizers, 24D etc. sprayed on it .... it is probably much more chemically safe... Also, weed dragon.... the weeds come back... I use one for patio, and driveway.... but dang weeds regrow...doesn't really kill most of them... so it is propane for weed dragon or gas for weedeater , well, I do have geese and horses... so I do have grass cutters....

I love using wood chips and have the same problem getting dump loads from the tree trimmers. They say they will be glad to bring their loads here but never do. Anyway, wanted to let you know that this year I am experimenting with a method called "One Straw Revolution" (aka: Natural Planting). No tilling, no fertilizer, no tending after planting, just harvest, collect seeds, and enjoy the harvest. If it works well here, it will be perfect for older homesteaders who can't do some of the things they used to be able to do. If you are not familiar with One Straw Revolution, read the book with the same title and/or look it up on the internet. Best to read the book, IMO. Cheers!

Now that is a load of mulch! Agree with the cardboard and newspaper. We live so far off the main road and it is uphill that the tree folks won't bring us any wood chips :( So.....we are getting a chipper so we can do it ourselves. Really our only option.

You're making a great decision not to use any kind of paper underlayment; it looks so messy as it breaks down. If you're putting your mulch down thick enough, cardboard makes no difference anyway. Notice, Paul talks about more than woodchips. Leaves, chicken-made compost, occasionally fertilizer are all part of his routine. And time, this is a multi-year plan. Good luck!

That happened to me with a heavy cement mixture that we buried to the rims. 7-9 inches deep in mud. An Estonian guy, who used to be in the Soviet army, threw pea shingle into the ruts and we got it out. I was amazed it worked.

Funny story!! I can relate because my husband is a truck driver, he used to park at home....well several early mornings he has started to head out of our long drive way and gets to the end and tandems won't take it out of our driveway due to a small dip haha. I have pulled him backwards in our little old 4 wd jeep Cherokee to unstick him so many times...too funny really!!! Thanks for sharing your story, loved it.

i have used cardboard under my river rock landscaping as a weed suppressant, we have to use hardware cloth under everything due to gophers & voles. we had our very first load of wood chips dropped off July 5th, that has been spread around our home front and back and i am so happy with it. it should serve us well for years to come as it breaks down, we can move it around as needed etc. i was thrilled to get it for free! its been a fun learning experience so far, enjoying the ride! our current project is turning a small patch of lawn in the back yard into a future veggie garden, pretty excited about that! 😀😀

Never thought to fence in our chickens just the garden (we also have to worry about deer). Although we do not have a lot of land we let the chickens out while we are home (they have an enclosed and roofed outdoor area too). Unfortunately because of roaming dogs and mink we can't let them out from sunup to sundown but they still get quite a bit of free yard exercise and are happy and healthy. Maybe someday we can get some land outside of town and let them run more....that would be nice. Nice tips Doug!

That is what happens when favors are called in. How long was the trailer it self. He did like a good driver but first thing he forgot to check was the grass before leaving the lane. He would have saved a tow job for sure. Rememberif you have any mulch leftover, use it in the composting pile for use in the garden after the harvest.

If possible, get the woodchips in the fall and let them compost for six months. VERY important. Turn the pile once, at least and keep it moist. I know- big job. Then use in the garden in the spring. Then they will break down faster in the garden.

Mulch is hard to come by in my area as well. When Tractor Supply has a sale on horse bedding pellets I grab a few bags for the garden. Works well as the pellets break down quickly into saw dust effectively smothering weeds/preventing new ones from sprouting. ♥

I seem to have the same problem if I doing one thing like bring in mulch I then add work by having to fill in the ruts that the big truck left. Last year they dump it in my front yard while i was at work so when I got home I had to move it with a wheelbarrow to keep it from killing my grass. Thanks for the video I have to go eat my seeds now before I go water the garden. Have a great day.

Yeah I know that living out in the country makes it difficult to find wood chips. I've wrote to every tree service company within 20 miles of my area and heard nothing back. But thankfully there's a company 20 miles from us that sells mulch, sod, compost and rock, So I bought 84 yards of mulch and had it delivered in a semi for $12.50 a yard plus $200.00 for delivery. $1,250.00 :( but at least now after 10 months have gone by my garden is doing great.

I have wondered about the cardboard too. We did do one area like that, but the others we have been pulling up the sod and then we till it and rake it off before adding a layer of wood chips. This method works for us as we have other areas that we are using the sod in.

after some thought, I figured out that the idea of "back to eden gardening" was we would never plant in the soil unless planting trees or something deep rooted, and like you I needed to plant now not five years from now, I have a small garden and use a tiller and shovel to hand make my rows, I make a mound row( looks like a tractor did it, I till the middle again making the row where I am going to plant pretty high, I then use a garden rake to level off the top until it is wide enough to support the plants, this usually leaves a deep middle row, I then fill the middle row with fresh woodchips until level with the row I am putting plants in, the wood chips rooting in the middle are usually about a foot deep, excess water stays in the middle and helps root the chips, the only place weeds grow is around the plants, the middle row area is weed free, I have done this for three years now, I had mostly hard clay, I now have about 8" of black rich top soil, the woodchips have always rotted out before the next year, in spring I till (my choice) everything together and start over

I have been having a farm deliver their spent shavings (with horse poop) from the stalls to my garden about once a month. We now have about 6 10yd dump loads spread out. I am hoping it has the same benefits as the larger mulch chips. The pigs loved it during the winter when we had 4 feet of snow because the center was warm and toasty.
