My grandparents use to live in the Outer Banks in NC and we spent every summer out there growing up. They have since moved and I went back after college after about a 5 year break from OBX and it's crazy how much the people make the experience what it is and not neccesarily the place itself. So many memories that you just cant replace or recreate without the people that made it what it was.

I had a vacation house I used to go to nearly every week end growing up. My aunt got married there, we had a pool, a bunch of dogs and birds. My happiest childhood memories are all there. We stopped going when I was 12, and I miss it so much! It was really bittersweet moving away and I get so nostalgic thinking about it!

There was a place we went to when I was a kid because it was owned by my dad's school and he could rent it out super cheap for a week. It was in the middle of nowhere with one shop a mile away and a pay phone for communication. But there was this lovely little river over the road and it was the best week of the year. Sadly the guy who looked after it passed away so the school sold it back to the local town and now no one uses it and it's sad. Good memories were had there.

My family always moved a lot when I was a child. We moved from the US to Kenya to France so we never had one specific spot to always go back to. The longest we ever stayed in one place was 6 years and the only traditional vacation spot was at Diani beach on the coast of Kenya which is just gorgeous, white sand as far as the eye can see. When we moved to France we couldn't really go back there anymore so we stopped. I always envied people who had consistant traditions and vacation spots and I never considered that at one point they would have to stop and never go back when they are adults and the sadness that would bring with it. Luckily, we are planning on going back to the same place at that beach next summer! It will be so fun to revisit all my childhood nostalgia. Thanks for sharing part your traditions with us.

My family used to go to various cabins in th Ozarks when I was a kid. Not too much fun, being just the 3 of us, and none of us were super active (and my mom was blind). I do remember my dad taking advantage of those time-share companies getting a free night at one of their properties, and only having to listen to a presentation.

When I was a kid, my parents had a boat. My dad's side of the family owned a property near Lake Hartwell in SC. We had friends that had a house and dock on the lake, and they let us use it all we wanted. Our property was just across the street. We had a HUGE camper there and during the summer, every weekend (if not just an entire week), we'd go down to the camper and stay. We'd go out on the boat and fish. My dad would pull my brother, our cousins, and I on floats behind the boat. My uncle had a jet ski and the kids got to take turns riding on it with him. And of course we swam a lot. One day while my dad and a couple of my uncles were out fishing, 3 kids on a jet ski ran into the boat. The boat and my family members were fine, but the kids that had been on the jet ski had to be taken to the hospital for some pretty bad injuries. The oldest of those kids was 15 and the accident was their fault. No more than 2 people should ever be on a jet ski at a time and the jet ski should be driven by an adult. Anyway, after that accident, the lake lost its appeal to the adults. Not too long after that, our friends that let us use their dock moved away, and the people that bought their property wouldn't let us use the dock anymore, and our other friends with a dock wouldn't let any of the kids use it without a life jacket on, not even to just stand on the dock and fish, so it lost its appeal to the kids and we stopped going altogether. After a couple of years, my dad sold the boat. Shortly after, he sold the truck he used to haul it. Then many more years after the family sold the camper, and not too long after, the property that they camper used to sit on, which brought everything to a total close. I have many fond memories of our era of the lake.

As a kid, we used to stay in the same condo every year at the beach, and then we kind of just stopped going when I got into high school because my mom went back to get her masters and she couldn’t go. We haven’t been back since the summer after my seventh grade year and I’m about to be a senior, and so whenever I think about summer I still think we’re going to this place and we just never do, and you’re right, it is bittersweet. I loved going and made so many good memories, but this leaves room to make new traditions once I move out.

We went there 1-2 times a year until I was in Jr. High, & I have wonderful memories of going there. There are times I wish I could go back, but mostly I don’t want to because I don’t want to taint the good memories I have of being there.

My dad was on the volunteer fire department when I was a kid and one of the perks of that was a stay at Firemen’s Lodge, which is in our town on one of the lakes and is this big secluded area surrounded by trees and the lake and it has 4 tiny little cabins, and every fireman’s family got a 2 week stay in one of them during the summer. I think the land was donated to the fire department in like the 1920s or 30s and they cut down all the trees and built everything, which is amazing because nowadays a piece of land that size on that specific lake would probably go for like half a million dollars. We always stayed with the same other 3 families and we always stayed the same 2 weeks, the last week of June and the first week of July, meaning we were always there over the 4th. A few years ago my dad retired from the fire department, which obviously means we don’t have that stay anymore, and it’s always really weird not being there on the 4th, because like when I was a kid it was not the 4th of July unless we were at the lodge swimming all day, going out on the boat to watch fireworks, and having a chimney fire, s’mores, and sparklers before bed.

Once my Grandparents were not able to go any longer it was bitter sweet that tradition ended. But it made way for us going every other year to somewhere else awesome in the world. Australia, Israel/Egypt, South America, plenty of fun exciting new places because we started doing something different. Some day though I will have to go back to Treasure Island, FL to where I have so many childhood vacation memories.

LOL, love Luke. Water is a thing! I spent most of my life scared to death of it, and it has only been in my mid to late 40s that I figured out water is awesome. It took some work with a persistent husband. Puddles are great. Please don't be one of those parents who doesn't let your child play in the rain. Let him play in the rain. Playing in the rain is awesome, and not just for kids. Everyone should play in the rain.

Is there a place my family and I used to go to all the time growing up that I don't go to anymore? Yes. I grew up going camping with my extended family on my dad's side. There is one particular campsite that was always our favorite. Of course, it was in the forest among the tall Pondarosa pines. There was a huge boulder all us cousins used to like to climb on, and the campsite was sort of set on the side of a hill. If we walked down the side of that hill, we'd find a small stream at the bottom. We'd spend hours there, looking for crawdads and whatever else we could see in the stream. There are so many great memories at that campsite. But sadly, my dad passed away back in 2012. Afterwards, my mom didn't want to go camping anymore. It was too hard for her. She did go once with my brothers a little while afterward, but, it was too hard emotionally. Just a month or so ago, one of my dear aunt's passed away. She LOVED going camping. Here's a little side fact: After my dad passed away and my mom didn't want to go camping anymore, the rest of my extended family who went with us still went camping. But, ever since my dad passed away, they hadn't been able to get our same campsite but would get others on the same property instead. However, this last time they did get that same campsite we grew up going to. So, this aunt, one of her last wishes was to have a little bit of her ashes spread when they went camping again. So, not only were her ashes spread at the property we would camp at, but, also the exact same campsite - I don't think that's coincidence. Me, my mom, and my sister did go up to the cite for the day (it's only about 2 hrs away), and it was bittersweet. It was emotional as my cousins put a little bit of my aunt's ashes in the ground, and let some go in the wind. But, it was also nice to reminisce and catch up with everyone.

I'm thinking that maybe Beths aunt is retiring so she will not longer have access to the location. Especially if this place is owned and run by the union!! I used to work for a corporation where the union also owned various cottages and holiday locations that union members could hire and rent for 1 to 3 weeks during the year!! But once you leave the business and the union, and you stop paying union fees, you no longer have access. I cannot say for sure, but that is my thinking...

Hey, J, I saw the Artemis Fowl book club thing, but after the fact. Not great viewing hours for Europe, but I liked it really much. I don't know if I can comment in post on a twitch video or how that would show, so I'll just write it here: If you decide to listen to the Golden Compass like you were talking about, make sure you get hold of the version where Philip Pullman himself narrates the text and a BBC radio cast does all of the dialogue, 'cause that one is awesome (and unabridged). (I don't know if there even are any other version, but in case there are, make sure it's the Pullman narrated one).

My family usually vacations in our caravan, so we never had any summer home or any place we would rent consistantly, we just decided a place to go and went there, sometimes a place we've already been, but mostly new places. My dads grandparents had a lease on a plot of land on the Åland Island (between Sweden (were I live) and Finland), that passed to my dad's parents, but then no one renewed the lease and we had to leave it forever in 2011. Sometimes I miss it, it was on a cliff right by the ocean, so great view, you could go fishing easiyl and with mostly forrest all around I could shoot with my dad's grandpas old air rifle without risk of harming anyone. But I wouldn't realy wanna go back, unless maybe except to see if it's still there, it was just two small houses, only one tap for water that we got from the neighbours and not even a proper outhouse, just a bucket to do your stuff in.
