in Yzerman's defense, it took 2 years for Red Wings to remove those horrible contracts Holland signed. Coupled with zero lottery luck (where twice they fell in the draft), is why its taken this long. The only low points for him so far has been signing of Copp, Holl, chariot and trading for Petry. This team direly needs a 2C and 2D behind Sider (walman and ghost/chariot are not it).

Re Mathews being best Leaf ever. Some things are hard to grade. I've seen the Leafs win Cups, and I'm not sure. Yet. Sittler had to battle a completely toxic owner who called him a cancer on the team and who took pleasure in trading away his linemates. Sittler was fierce before things went really badly with the exconvict Ballard. Sundin looked like he was playing by himself sometimes. His linemates seemed to be given to him to increase their trade value some years. Better management would have given Sundin 20 more points every year. Mahovolich was simply awesome at times and very powerful; he bodychecked Bobby Hull into unconsciousness. Keon was incredibly skilled, as was Gilmore. One thing that they all shared and that Mathews doesn't show as much is their willingness to use the body. I think Mathews is the most talented with the puck on the stick ( I believe the goal that got Bertuzzi going was actually Mathews scoring by bouncing the puck off of Bertuzzi). Mathews is not afraid to block shots and is among the leaders in forwards at that. I think Mathews COULD be the best Leaf ever if he wants to be, but I wish he was a bit nastier and created a little more fear and a little more ROOM for himself!
@ginnyweatherbee79416 ай бұрын
It wasn’t only the goaltending with Buffalo that was rough at the beginning of the season, it was that the guys who were scoring like crazy last year, just weren’t and then Quinn, Samuelsson,Thompson,Krebsy,Cozen all went down at various points before Christmas. Upie being good is completely shocking considering his season last year. They do need to hope that Levi can be a good backup for now because Comrie isn’t it.

As much as the team needs to have playoff success for Matthews to be in those conversations, he really needs to have a strong playoff run individually at some point. I don't think it's right to say he's a choker or can't/won't do it, but 22 goals and 44 points in 50 career playoff games from the guy who's the best goal scorer of his generation doesn't cut it. Guys like McDavid, MacKinnon, Draisaitl and Kucherov have all taken over series', and Matthews just hasn't done that yet.

Part of the problem for the power play disparity is you are one of the least penalized teams in the league year over year check the stats. You know the refs call games even so there's the same penalties for each team. Like you said the leafs don't take a lot of penalties so the refs don't call a lot of penalties on their opponents either and this is super evident when they play a team that takes advantage of this like the Panthers or the Bruins. I am not saying this is okay, it's bullshit. But it's the way the refs call the games. If you had the most penalties called against you and had the least power play time then you could really complain it's biased. It's not a bias it's just the bullshit way they call games.

Connor McDavid turns 28 in January of next year. Leon Draisaitl turns 29 at the start of next season. If you had said a decade ago that McDavid would still be without a cup it would have been unfathomable. Hockey is the ultimate team game and whether or not a player has won the cup should not count towards their legacy. If I’m Draisaitl or McDavid then I’m signing somewhere else if I don’t get to at least the Stanley cup finals this year or next.

A minor frustration for me is when you talk about Matthews you often fail to mention how offensive and open this era is. How attacking and offensive minded his team is, how many point per game players the leafs have and how many passers etc. When Ovie scored 65 it was in an era when people didnt score 50. Not to mention he made the Caps dangerous by himself. We look at near 40 year old Ovie as a standstill, one trick pony. But in his youth he would charge by 5 players, hooked, slashed and held, and still score. Every game was highlight reel watch. Even if Matthews get 70. Its no where near as impressive as Ovies 65. Matthews is great, but not like Ovie and Crosby. Those 2 would score 100 points in a very gritty era with very tough stay at home d-men. And they did it on very bad teams. Matthews could go to Arizona and I bet he would struggle to reach 40 goals and 70 points. Crosby and Ovie would flirt with 100+.
