@@HowtoADHD Many of these tips in the video are the ones that have worked best for me over the years! One thing I've always had a hard time with is packing before I go back, especially with figuring out what to bring and not to bring, since I have less space in my dorm than at home. Another thing that was especially hard for me in the beginning was figuring out how to get things done without having the accountability of my parents being there, so I think tips for that would be beneficial as well.

Some college tips: I could NOT deal with checking every syllabus for potential assignments every day, so I got myself a "large print" planner so that in class, when I already had my syllabus in my color coded binder, I could check the homework and write it in my planner (and actually have space for multiple assignments and details). For schedule, I knew that momentum is key, so once classes were done I'd go to the library and do my best to work until I finished or got hungry (or my 'cafeteria closes in 30 minutes GO EAT' alarm went off). After dinner I could decide if I was able to keep working, or if I needed a break.

I have color coded my kids for decades. They still use their color coded buckets near the front door when they visit. If I wasn’t able to find their color on something they needed, a sticker was added. Each kid had a specific character, like a princess, a fairy, sonic hedgehog, or a ninja turtle.

One thing I did in college to keep track of long term assignments was to put them on a post it. My desk was against the wall and above my laptop screen were post its in order of when the assignment was due, with what class it was for and what it was called. I could add post its with steps finished and to be done if needed, and when I handed in the assignment I got to crumple up the post it. I also use fairy lights on a timer to help with time blindness. They turn on when I need to get up in the morning, turn off when I need to be out the door. In the evening they turn on when I get home, and turn off at (hopefully) bedtime. Kept me from accidentally staying up writing an essay until 2am!

I recently started watching your videos again after recommending your channel to my partner, who I just helped get diagnosed with ADHD! I started watching this channel when I was 18. I was a high school dropout, and I wasn't aware I had adhd or that I had been struggling because of my lack of support. Your channel taught me a lot and helped empower me to get the diagnosis I needed and get the support I needed. I'm 23 now, and I'm so happy to see you are still around making content. I'm starting college in less than a month, and I genuinely wouldn't have made it to the place I have without this channel. I'm so grateful there are people like you out in the world. I have no established foundation for starting school with adhd and this is really helpful! Thank you, truly.

@RazzyBazzy Congratulations on starting college! As a college professor, I want to let you know that there are still many professors who don't understand ADHD and have old school beliefs about student behaviors. I encourage you to work with your Disabilities Office or counselor to make sure you are getting the accommodations you need from the beginning. Many of my students are still carrying the trauma from their interactions in K-12 institutions, so I understand that having an open and honest conversation with professors is difficult, but I've always found it helpful when my students sit down with me to discuss what they have found works for them and what will be most useful in my class to help them be successful. Oftentimes, the DSO or counselors assume the only necessary accommodations are time and a half on tests and a quiet testing environment--but for my class those only help a little. (I teach writing, so we don't have many timed tests.) I encourage you to work with others (including other students) to figure out what you need and then advocate for yourself. Most professors want their students to succeed, so don't be afraid to work with them and the DSO! Good luck and enjoy!

I am so time blind! My biggest success as an adhd mom of 2 small children ( likely also with adhd) is getting to school on time for 2 years in a row. I use a system of alarms on my phone in 5, 10 and 15 minute increments. Everything in the morning routine gets a timer from wake up to leave the house. Doing round numbers builds in a little buffer room when someone has a meltdown during shoes on or an unexpected extra bathroom break. If I do not use my system, my 7 year old calls me out on it and says, " mom just use your alarms." I found something that works for us.

I don't know much about your school experience, other than what I've heard in your videos, but mine was not exactly tolerant of kids who were different than the rest of the class. I remember a trip to the principal when I told my kindergarten teacher I was bored with coloring, cutting and pasting, because I wanted to read. The principal's response was to reach into his desk drawer, brandish a large wooden paddle, and tell me "if you say you're bored again, I'll GIVE you the board."

This year I'm determined to help my 8th grader learn how to "gracefully" fail tasks. This is specific to excessive classwork and homework, because he struggles with handwriting. I have it in his 504 that he requires multiple methods to complete a task, but the district has regressed to 95% paper assignments This year I'm going to send a letter to his teachers requesting a syllabus so I can help him plan out his assignments to get the grade we want (not-Fs, otherwise I'm not picky) without feeling overwhelmed. And if they don't provide it, well...mama bear is gonna have words and that's so not my style, but I have to be a better advocate for him. We've tried 2 years of middle school where I left the teachers alone; time to switch it up. Kind and reasonable, but firm.

Idea: try a typewriter. it's still paper, but let him type if that's better than handwriting. I'm a strong advocate for handwriting, but I also have carpal tunnel and tendonitis in my wrists making writing very painful. A typewriter is the perfect middle ground. Just invest in some white-out as well. But handwriting helps the brain and it's wiring for other tasks too, not just writing. So it's good to keep up with that too. But using a typewriter can really help for things like essays, and you can use it with worksheets as well.

I work at a university, and also take classes (finished my masters in summer 2022, and am now taking undergrad classes for fun, one at a time). I have a launchpad for my work bag/purse, with house/car keys clipped to it and work badge/keys in a single pocket of that bag, and the only place the work badge goes other than that pocket is clipped to my person (and it's on a retracting cord so I never have to unclip it to use it). I have a separate class bag with my class books, a laptop for taking notes, pen/paper, reading glasses, a small water bottle, and a folder for containing class notes/handouts. Having just one class at a time was one of the strategies that made college easier for me as an adult--I didn't have to juggle, I didn't have to prioritize, I didn't have to worry about catching up in more than one class if I let things slip. And I finished my masters with a 4.0.

I live alone but having a launch pad has been so great in helping me get to work on time. I’ve got everything I need to get out the door (usually) and I’ve been on time and early to catch the bus. Before I had it set up I had things near the door so I was usually on time but sometimes I’d forget something (like my lip gloss or tools, or my lunch) or I’d struggle getting my stuff together and miss the bus. It’s helped a lot. Things are together more often than not. Having a hub and planning my week Sunday night sounds like a great idea. I’ve got this binder and I like to scrap book but I haven’t used it. I think I’ve got too much in it. It might be easier on my self if I take it month by month instead of six months (just staring at it thinking about where I’m supposed to be goal wise six months from now.)

My advice is just to keep doing what you've always done to survive, and maybe implement some tips here and there into your own life how ever they may fit. Having to be responsible for myself since I was 7 (much like the rest of Gen X), I had to figure things out and adapt things to work for myself. No one did things for me and if I didn't do them, they didn't get done. My parents were terrible role models too for the most part, and I pretty much learned stuff from them in the form of don't do what they do.

@Franky_PT I think it would be worth talking to your boss and letting them know how you learn best. I've had the same problem many times in my job when I switch to a new role or we adopt a new system. I tend to get bored or wander aimlessly if I'm told to just "familiarize myself" with the tools, platforms, etc. I finally got up the nerve to tell my boss that I don't learn well that way and that it would be much more helpful to have a project (or even a made-up project) to work on because I do much better when I'm in problem-solving mode. It becomes like a quest or game in my head. In one job, I was actually allowed to start working on an upcoming project (and make notes for the team). And in another instance, I was given a past project that I could re-create on the new platform. (They didn't use my re-creation, but it helped keep me focused.) I hope that helps. Good luck!

For some reason i Rly like the short sleeved shirts like this better on Jessica...ig i feel like it's more flattering on her and somehow makes her seem more authoritative on whatever she's talking abt😎😍😂 I also somehow feel like they make me better able to focus on whatever she's saying... Idk...i just like them better lol😏😏😂

The irony of reading a book and then getting distracted by an adhd video meant to help with stuff like distraction and on top of that the irony of doing a very ADHD thing and setting that book ontop of a plate of eggs still open pages down because an adhd video distracted you don't worry this book has faced worse the book is starting to split in half and the back cover is gone

In terms of a homework station, what if, because I rent a room, I can't have things like this? My bed is where I eat, game, watch TV, do homework, because my room is my living room, my bedroom, my dining space. Bathroom and kitchen are the only 2 common spaces, and my roommate causes me stress by even being around him, so unfortunately the kitchen isn't an option.
@HowtoADHD5 ай бұрын
Ohhh that's a tough one. It depends on how big the room is and if you can fit a smol desk in there... or use different lap desks for different purposes.... going out to the library or a cafe to work on homework if it's not too distracting... hrmmmm.... I'm curious what other tips the community might have!

A coworker gave me the idea of having music to play when work is finished as a cue to your brain to relax. Maybe some kind of ritual to start and stop homework would help?

My last comment seemed to have vanished, so I'll try again. CGP Grey made a great video about roughly this topic in 2020, called Spaceship You. There are some really valuable insights in this video that, rewatching it, I only now realised I've been neglecting over the last few weeks. Watch it, it might help you out!

I would highly recommend getting accommodations from your college's Disabilities Office (DSO). Or if you have an assigned counselor already, you could start there. As a college professor, I find that students who have already gotten accommodations in place by the first week of school tend to do much better. You don't have to use the accommodations, but you want them in place early in case you need them. I also highly recommend you email each instructor and set up a meeting early on to discuss what kinds of tests or assignments you'll need to do and general expectations so that you can hopefully find strategies that work for you and are appropriate for each class. (My students find that strategies or accommodations that work for a Math class, say, don't really apply in my writing class.) Also, if you know strategies that work for you already (like an accountability buddy or a body double), try to get those things in place right away. For example, ask a friend, a family member or a cool classmate to do study sprints with you once or twice a week and set up those specific times early. I hope that helps! Good luck with college! I'm sure you'll crush it!
