I was born in 1981, so I was almost ideally placed, chronologically, to experience this film as a childhood wonder. It cracked me up when you said you couldn't identify the differences between the 80s and the 50s. It was so obvious to us back then, but...things have changed dramatically. I mean, I graduated high school in 1999, before the ubiquitous cell phone (flip, not smart) and we were all psyched about AIM. The things we've seen in this short life are astonishing. One of the most astonishing thing is that 2024 is further away from 1985 than 1985 was from 1955...by nearly a decade... I'm going to go take my multi-vitamin and do some pushups. Ha!

2:20 The editing clipped it here, but the skateboard rolls past a clock on the floor on its side, with the correct time. It's a blink-and-you-miss-it scene. 2:50 The eardrums -- that's what should have happened. The speaker wouldn't have blown him across the room. 8:50 One of the Bobs said that at an initial viewing, the entire audience seemed worried about the dog. When he reappeared safe and sound, there was an apparently audible relief in the audience. 11:20 The internal combustion engine still runs on ordinary gasoline, as we learn in BttF III. 16:50 Naughty Birdwatching. 23:50 The one-minute window of uncertainty bugs me. 35:20 As another reactor put it, George's spin is still brand new. It took him several seconds to realize that this other boy would be a piece of cake. 39:10 The original Marty, Eric Stoltz, tried to make it a serious movie. 40:00 Often one re-fights the battle, re-argues the argument, tries to see what he could have said or done differently, how he could have gotten through to Doc. But this particular sentence, "Your life depends on it!" should have sufficed. 42:20 I would like to think that Doc connected several things, after the time-machine's success, that might have led him to the possibility that he would die horribly, even without the letter. 43:50 The movie had later setups and payoffs as well: Marty destroys one of the pines, and then the "Twin Pines Mall" becomes the "Lone Pine Mall". The clock ledge collapses under Doc, and then the ledge is damaged whereas initially it was flat. Mom might have been the chaste young lady of her stories, until Grandpa hit Marty and Marty repeatedly stood up to Biff for her, becoming just too attractive for her to control. I suspect that, although nobody could possibly verify it, Biff was happier with his own auto detailing business than as a corporate supervisor potentially terrified of being caught. The final scene was never intended as a sequel hook; it was only a joke. No sequel was envisioned, or thought of. It caused the Bobs trouble when they had to make Part II.

I guess the biggest lesson from this part of the trilogy is not to put your parents on a pedestal or judge them too harshly. If there's something about your life from that time you're not proud of, chances are your parents have some, too.

I heard it was a bit more than that, would we be friends with them? And there is the classic time-travel paradox of going back in time and doing something that leads to you, like kill your grandpa, or in this case, interfere with your parents getting together. (And I don't know of any answer.) For instance, the world that Marty encounters in 1955 would be what he knew as the 1985 he left. So for instance, Goldie Wilson would have decided to run for mayor on his own, Doc would build a time machine without knowing it would work, and Chuck Berry would write Johnny B Goode independently. Maybe in this new altered world, Goodie would start earlier and have gotten further in the new Marty-influenced world, which means . . . Like if Marty's parents did NOT get together, no Marty, hence no Doc's helper, so no going back in time so this cycle Marty's parents WOULD get together. A paradox! (PS - in 1955, the Civil Rights movement was just beginning. Truman had integrated the troops in '48 and Brown v. Board of Education had only been decided in 1954. So the idea of any black man winning an election in anywhere outside a predominately black district, like Harlem, was inconceivable. But in 1985, it was pretty inconceivable a black man could win the presidency. When Marty and Doc go to 2015, among the many things the movie could not anticipate was Obama's presidency.)

1955 to 1985 saw a lot of sociopolitical differences, but was technologically not quite part of the boom we experienced from say 1990 to 2020. That's why the two decades seem indistinguishable. Because aesthetically and technologically, things really hadn't moved too far in that 30 year period. Especially compared to the changes you and I have experienced.

I grew up in the '50's so I remember it well, but over time, there were incremental changes that accumulated unnoticed. Watching this movie in 1985, it was a shock all the way through to be presented with the vast differences. The movie captured so many nuances of how these two time periods would clash. If I was teaching American history, I would show my class this movie and It's A Wonderful Life and then talk in great detail all the elements of past society. Robert Zemeckis directed this movie and a few years later, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Both focus on the same theme, although in a totally different way. For centuries, people lived, worked, and played as close to the center of town as possible. As the car culture took hold in America, after WWII, there was a wholesale overturning of society's goals, with the life of the town/city moving out to the suburbs, leaving the bustling downtown the neglected "inner city." It was only in the 1980's the people began to realize in many ways this was a mistake.

🎶 "That's The Power Of Love!" 🎶 Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Billy Zane. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: Writers Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis actually received a fan letter from John DeLorean after the film's release, thanking them for immortalizing his car. Music Enthusiast Fact: The judge who stands up to say that Marty (Michael J. Fox) is "just too darn loud" is actually Huey Lewis, whose songs "The Power Of Love" and "Back In Time" are featured in this movie. Marty's (Michael J. Fox) guitar is a Ibanez black Roadstar II. Small Connection Fact: When Lorraine follows Marty (Michael J. Fox) back to Doc's house, she and Doc exchange an awkward greeting. This marks the only on-screen dialogue that Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson ever have, though they have appeared together in six movies. Historical Fact: Apparently, Ronald Reagan was amused by Doc Brown's (Christopher Lloyd) disbelief that an actor like him could become President, so much so that he had the projectionist stop and replay the scene. He also seemed to enjoy it so much that he even made a direct reference of the film in his 1986 State of the Union address: "As they said in the film Back To The Future (1985), 'Where we're going, we don't need roads.'"

It's interesting that you said the movie could have had a different tone. The director always wanted Michael J. Fox for the lead, but at first, he couldn't do it because of his commitment to his TV show, Family Ties. So another actor, Eric Stolz, was cast instead. They filmed a couple of weeks with him, but it didn't work because Eric insisted the story was not a comedy but a tragedy, so he tried to play it that way. The director didn't agree with him and didn't like the way it was coming out, so they dropped Eric. Luckily, Michael was able to work things out with the producers of his show and ended up doing the film anyway. (He was doing _both_ at the same time, working the show during the day and right away going to the movie set, plus working the movie on weekends, so the poor guy was getting maybe four hours of sleep a night!) Maybe it could have been done as a drama, but that was not what the filmmakers wanted to do with the story at all, and we have this great slice of movie history to show for it - one of the best movies of the 1980's. :)

In an early draft of the movie script, Marty's mom had a more tragic story. As a teenager, she got r aped (I guess by Biff - Remember the scene in the school cafeteria when she slaps him and says "I'm not that kind of girl", and Biff says "Maybe you are and you just don't know it yet), and because of this, she got an unfair reputation as a loose troublemaker. In those days, in the 50's, people blamed the victim and not the one who attacked her (yes, it still happens sometimes today, but it was commonplace back then). Her father disowned her and her reputation was ruined. She went into the bottle and never got back out. She married George because he seemed safe and was actually willing to be with her. She made up the story of feeling sorry for him. She didn't tell her kids the truth. Instead, she told them "I never did those things at your age". I think Uncle Joey's troubles with the law came from his young life with an undeserved reputation as the troublemaking brother of the town harlot. I'm glad they didn't include any of this in the movie. It would have made it too dark.

12:23 -- RE: "OK, wow. I thought this was a comedy movie."; A: It is, and the genius behind the script and plot was smart enough to realize that, just as with ancient storytellers in Greece, Comedy works better when it is paired with Tragedy. Not all comedy needs to have cartoon physics (clearly, there are times in this film when there almost are) and, as with most written fiction, comedy can have well developed characters who have genuinely bad things happen to them so that we can see what stuff they're truly made of. This film is literally an example of perfection in the sense that no Setup goes without a Payoff, and since it's a Trilogy some of the Payoffs get 2, 3 or even more repeats. If anything, the Tragedies need to happen for the plot to advance, at all.

I'm an older Sports Car Club of America member in the US. Worked as a corner marshal before and after the half a minute I raced, most of us had 'cool' street cars. Had a couple of buddies who'd made the mistake of buying one new. Every time the thing would fail to start, they'd be laughing out of their seats. And of course, the PRV V-6 in the back. They handled pretty well, you just couldn't get one really 'going down the road' After the movie got so popular, they were asked to bring them to car shows. Had to keep window cleaner and rolls of paper towels in the cars, at the time it was the only way to keep them clean. They'd be parked on the show field, we'd cut out for lunch and come back to dozens of fingerprints on the stainless steel. People couldn't resist touching it. Cool thing, though..they'd open the doors and play the Huey Lewis cassette playing all day. Battery so dead we had to 'push start' to get 'em out of the show. 😄

@@DaleKingProfile , that one's possibly real. That was a thing before the nationwide 55mph limit was abandoned. Carmakers thought it would be 'more exiting' for US customers see the needle way up high, instead of down low. My classic is a 1984 Honda Prelude, the stock one in the car is the 85mph one. You could 'overwind' them past the markings on the face of it and just try to determine your higher speeds in your head. Strange days, man!

"Calvin Kline": During the 1950s in the US, many kids were sent to 'Summer Camps' for recreation during the summer, when schools weren't open. Parents would often write their kids' name on the underwear before they sent them to camp, so that the workers doing laundry for the camp would return it to the right kid. When Lorraine saw the '80s marketing on undergarments on Marty's, she thought it was his name.

Fantastic reaction as usual ! I only found funny you saying 1955 doesn't seem to be much different to 1955 ! Well, it's kind of comprehensible since you're so young and all. I watched this movie in 1985, in a theater, by chance, without knowing anything about it, and what a surprise ! Probably others will comment this here, but let me tell you : you're right about saying this movie is perfect, so much so it is that the screenplay of the entire trilogy is taught at cinema courses as the most perfect ones, where everything is tied up, no loose ends at all. Now, I will look for your reactions to the other two sequels. Peace !

Honestly, it was difficult watching your comments in the beginning, talking about how this is such an "old movie", and how you don't like "old movies". But your reaction became awesome as the movie progressed and you appear to have become more aware that the age of the movie is irrelevant when it's a fantastic movie such as this. I think your observation of 1955 and 1985 not looking very different is funny because it’s true for America on a global scale. You’re Nigerian, so I imagine someone going back 30 years in Lagos would be quite a change. My friend is from HCM City in Vietnam and doesn’t even recognize the neighborhood he grew up in 10 years later due to all the development. Or imagine someone going back from 2015 to 1985 in Shenzhen, China. What was a village then is now one of the tech hubs of the world.

Your point about the film having a serious side is typical of 80's films. A lot of the comedies 48hrs, Beverly Hills Cop, Ghost Busters, etc.. all have an actual story. At some point comedies just become a collection of random jokes and no longer actual films with a point, a serious plot to take serious.

There’s so much to the writing of this movie even beyond the Twin vs Lone Pine Mall thing: Lorraine’s dad keeps hitting kids with his car because they’re distracted by exhibitionist Lorraine undressing in the window, she is also who George is peeping with his binoculars. Lorraine’s mom says, “he’s joking, nobody has two television sets!” But Doc has two, one in his main house and one in the garage where they store the DeLorean. The theater where the DeLorean hits after coming back to 1985 used to be a porno theater before Marty went back in time but ends up a church when he gets back from 1955. The 1955 theater also has Ronald Reagan’s name as one of the movie’s featured actors. When Marty goes into the 1955 cafe and orders a “Pepsi Free” he’s referring to the 1980’s Pepsi Sugar-Free, a can of it is also seen in Marty’s room while he’s sleeping. Marvin Berry called his cousin Chuck Berry to have him listen to Marty playing Johnny B. Goode, Marvin says, “you know that new sound you’re looking for? Well, listen to this!” In real life, Chuck Berry wrote and sang Johnny B. Goode and it was released in 1958. I also recently heard that the man who was sleeping on the bench who says, “crazy drunk drivers…” when Marty gets back to 1985 is the 1955 mayor Red Thomas? lol idk about that one though

Sorry can't remember the source, but I understand the bench-sleeper was the red-headed guy who pranked George by cutting-in to dance with Lorraine. In deleted scenes he pranks George a couple more times too. Since the prankster is never named specifically I can see where it's easy to ascribe the bench-sleeper as the former mayor, though he'd be way older than the bench guy.

32:00 -- RE: Lorraine, George, and Changing the Future; I've watched this film I dunno how many hundreds of times, and I've started seeing reaction channels like yours do content on it which does broaden my perspectives a bit. For example -- it was while watching you talk about the disconnect of Lorraine at the beginning trying to prevent her kids from doing the same things she once did that it occurred to me that what she's really doing is trying to prevent them all from being too much like Biff and not enough like George. It is George who says "Do you really think I need to swear?" and it's Biff who is constantly sexually assaulting Lorraine. If there is a feel good miracle at all in this, it is that apparently George was always the father of all his children, right?

the Delorean was a failed car...in the theater in 1985 when that car backed out of the trailer with the fog and all, and we saw what it was, the entire audience burst out in laughter!! The irony is because of Back to the Future, EVERYONE knows this car lol. On KZbin , you missed showing the line "Nest Saturday, we're going to send you BACK...to the FUTURE" and DOC pointing dramatically at the camera. This was used in the original trailer for the movie. The phrase "Great Scott!" was taken from the comic books like Superman in the 1950's and 60's.
