The "too darn loud" guy was the singer whose song Marty was playing. It's gigawatts, but pronounced "jigawatts" for the funniest reason: the writers weren't knowledgeable in science, so they went to a seminar, and they heard a German scientist pronounce it jigawatt, so they naturally assumed that was the correct way, so... it stuck. They had no consulting pros in the field of physics, or basic science, on the set.

Hee, fun! You don't talk too much at all. The main thing is that you're not talking over the dialogue so it's perfect. Love it. The guy who said they were "too darn loud" at the audition was Huey Lewis, who was the lead singer on Power of Love, the first copyrighted song. Marty does have Jennifer's number but she wrote down her grandmother's number, since that's where she'd be that night. Not that he called her but we needed an excuse for Marty to have kept the clock tower flyer so he could show it to Doc in 1955. Jennifer's number being on it is the only reason he wouldn't have thrown it directly into the trash. You're not crazy, it's gigawatts, but the term wasn't in common use at the time. They had a 50/50 shot and picked the wrong pronunciation. "Where'd he get a car?" That's Doc's car that Marty was using in 1955. "Are you McFucking Kidding Me Right Now?" (when the cable disconnected) Man, I love Back to the Future, but these movies really are a stress-fest. You think it's locked up, the plan's in place, and then forty things go wrong in the space of thirty seconds. I knew you'd love the Biff developments! You're doing the sequels, right? Keep an eye out, there are little Easter eggs throughout. For example, when Marty goes to meet Doc at the mall in the beginning of the movie, it's the Twin Pines Mall. When he returns from 1955, it's the Lone Pine Mall because one of the first things Marty did in '55 was run over one of the pine trees with the Delorean. Keep going!

The gigawatt pronunciation... I don't know if anybody's answered this, but you ARE correct. It's pronounced with a soft G, like gigabyte. At the time the movie was filmed, the scientist they consulted about the terminology in the script actually mispronounced it, so it ended up being mispronounced in the movie. 😂 Even in 1985 the concept of a gigabyte of data storage was absolutely UNHEARD OF, especially among the masses, so the pronunciation of the measurement "gig" wasn't common the way it is now. Kind of like in the early '00s when the masses didn't know what a terabyte was yet.
@jmhaces3 жыл бұрын
You're right, Doc Brown is mispronouncing "gigawatt" but back then nobody knew how a "giga" was supposed to be pronounced because home computing was in its infancy and that kind of computing power was years and years away, so it wasn't a commonplace prefix like it is now because nobody talked about gigabytes and stuff like that yet and it's a Latin prefix that rarely pops up in daily life otherwise. Christopher Lloyd, the actor who plays Doc, didn't know how it was supposed to be pronounced and nobody on set knew to correct him while they were filming it so it stuck.

After watching this trilogy, I suggest watching, or playing Back to the Futureç The Game, which takes place after part 3. It was made by TellTale Games, and it has most of the original actors.A Voice actor plays Marty, but Michael J. Fox does make a appearance. All the other actors mostly replay their roles. There are 5 stories~episodes. The same company did this for Ghost Busters; The Game, which I think of as Ghostbusters 3.

How cool would it be to reboot this as a series a la Doctor Who? Marty time-hops with Doc, encountering all kinds of situations, hijinks ensue. It would need perfect casting, but it could be a lot of fun.

in 1985 no one in America used the "giga-" prefix. "Gigabytes" and "gigahertz" were just theoretical dreams of computer scientists, and the only thing that was similar in popular consciousness was "gigantic", therefore, a soft "g" on "gigawatts"

A lot of the English speaking world still pronounces the metric prefix 'giga-' as "jigga" which was the standard until Silicon Valley started pronouncing it with a hard 'G'. The internet spread that pronunciation, which seems more prevalent today.

If you watch the second movie: Stop the movie at the end before the credits.. the marketing department back then, spoiled the 3rd movie big time in there 10 second preview... they spoiled it rotten bigtime, worst then Batman vs superman lol.. Remember as the screen starts to fade, END the movie! This was a drastic mistake they made, and this mistake was in all the film reels and VHS. I guess it could be worse lol. Like George Lucas destroying all original copies of StarWars, so your forced to buy the Extended cuts only. " Real ButtHead"

hmm, i don't think it ruined it at all. i saw the second one in the theater, i was in my early 20s, and back then spoilers weren't really a thing like they are these days. people were flipping the heck out with excitement at getting to see that much of a new movie a full year before it was due to come out. it was a treat.
@scorchogrey23853 жыл бұрын
Yeah I mean if you watched the first trailer and then a year later saw the movie, I mean it wasn’t spoiled. But now, for these purposes, when someone watches it right after watching first two movies, and then sees the trailer and THEN goes right into 3rd movie....yes it might give ideas towards spoilers. So I also recommend just pause it.

In 1985, the prefix "giga" was extremely rarely used, so few people were aware it even existed, let alone had any idea how to pronounce it. Christopher Lloyd, who played Doc, wasn't provided with a pronunciation guide, so he had to guess how the word was pronounced, and, as luck would have it, he guessed "jigawatts".

I just realized something. If Doc had already known about his own death but just pretended like he didn’t already know Marty from 1955 until after the events of this movie, his parents already should have already been the cool version. They fucked up the paradox. Or am I missing something?
@klopferator2 жыл бұрын
The Marty you see disappear at the end isn't the same Marty. That Marty already had the cool parents, but who knows what happened to him when he travelled into a different 1955. (That might be the only paradox - why should there be a different 1955.) Our Marty is from the original 1985, he doesn't know anything about "his" childhood in this cooler timeline. That's what Eric Stoltz (who originally played the role before being fired for not playing the comedy well) remarked at the script reading, he thought it was a tragedy because Marty is thrown into a new life at the end and he doesn't share most of the memories his family and friends have of him. He's almost a stranger. (Bob Zemeckis and Bob Gale admitted that Stoltz had a point, but that wasn't the kind of movie they wanted to make.)
@xonrob95752 жыл бұрын
@@klopferator that entire, long-winded explanation is based on a false presupposition. It is almost impossible for those two dates to line up (or even happen at all) for our Marty and the “alternate” Marty that you talked about. The small but distinct difference between the “cool” reality and the true reality would basically nullify everything that happened. His dad wouldn’t be bullied by Biff, family not in jail, mom a depressed alcoholic, etc. He probably wouldn’t even have met Doc.

I can’t help but have a different answer based on in-universe logic from the later movies; but based on just this one’s established rules on how changes to the time line take time to ripple forward .... (cracks knuckles) Marty (and the time machine) are stuck in 1955 because no lighting was funneled into the flux capacitor. He’s stuck here for what he thinks is forever. A week later (because that’s how long changes take to ripple forward 30 years) he fades from 1955 because Doc never lived long enough to build the car or send 1985 Marty back in time to “last week”. Doc’s dead body in the ground for a week would fade because, having never met Marty on November 5th, he wouldn’t have had any reason to be up there risking a fall to his death. He probably wakes up in his bed, remembering November 5-12 entirely differently because we are now back to the original timeline before the events of the movie. They now have a second chance to get to get it right or to mess up in a wholly different way.

the gigawatt pronunciation is an old pronunciation that fell out of use in the 70s for the most part, but the scientist brought on for consution to make things sound realistic was an old timer who used the old pronunciation, and it would make sense for doc brown to use that pronunciation for te same reason.

This has always bugged me. The minute hand on the clock only moves once every 60 seconds, so they had no way of knowing when _exactly_ the lightning was going to strike. If the clock was stopped with the time showing 10.04pm, it could've been any point from 10.04.00 to 10.04.59.
