Films like this make one thing quite clear: Stand-up comedians truly make some of the best actors, coming in just behind those once-in-a-generation talents like Gary Oldman or Christian Bale. Comedians have this incredible ability to read a room, adapt on the fly, and connect with an audience, which are all skills that translate beautifully to acting. Their background in comedy gives them a unique edge in timing, delivery, and character depth. Think about how Jim Carrey or Robin Williams could switch from making us laugh to tugging at our heartstrings with such authenticity. It's their experience in stand-up that hones their versatility and emotional range, making them phenomenal actors in both comedic and dramatic roles.

Strange side-note: when the rising politician Adolph Hitler visited Berlin in the twenties, the female wrestlers were a big hit with him, even if he didn't like the city.

My mom watched this movie multiple times (she loved it), and EVERY time she asks about the roll of toilet paper! There's a scene somewhere where you see why: To wipe the screens.

This great movie leaves us asking many questions, and we end up talking about the characters as if they are real people, like friends we know. Catherine would have blossomed under Morris' bemused tutelage, taking her to the theater, opera, and galleries of still-growing New York. She would have retained her girl-like innocence, he would have been quite the well-dressed dandy, and they would have been A-listers. She had been bred for that. Those ruby-and-diamond buttons were only a hint of the treasures in store. They would have of course been the subject of gossip, both kind and cruel. Maybe he was closeted, but he could easily have played around on the 'down-low', very discretely of course.

With regard to the ending, you're absolutely right in saying it's open to interpretation. This is not unusual in relation to the literary source, Henry James's "Washington Square." James is notorious for not spelling things out to the reader. Case in point, the movie "The Innocents" (1961) is based on "The Turn of the Screw," an ostensible ghost/horror novella that is equally plausible as a lady's descent into insanity. The protagonist is a governess engaged under mysterious circumstances to teach and raise two children of a widower living at a distance, and it appears to the lady that the children, a boy and a girl, are being badly influenced by ghosts of former employees of the father. Getting back to "The Heiress," I'm glad you love this movie, since I'm in my 60s and it delights me to see a new generation of fans learning to love classic movies. Keep reacting, please, Ms. Sam. 😀Best wishes from Washington DC.

So you say it would be "Time to get out", because of what the Nazi's would do. But people didn't, because they didn't believe it would really get worse... or "They are only a bunch of thugs...", or "We can control them...", or "It's only a small group..." Would YOU "get out" of the USA - NOW? Before the orange buffoon is actually inaugurated? ... Because it couldn't really get that bad?...

I watched this movie in theaters when it came out, and it has been firmly in my top 5 movies of all time ever since. I generally watch it multiple times a year, and back when I still had a DVD player I would sometimes watch it multiple times in a row, because the movie would just start over at some point if you didn't turn it off. And the only reason I can think of why this is, because I am not a big romance/rom com lover at all, is the casting for one, and on top of that, just amazing writing. Even though the story has that very typical romance/rom com 'over the top/unbelievable' plotline, the characters are so real, every single one of them feels like a real person. They aren't stereotypes or archetypes, they aren't too perfect or too flawed, etc. The plot flows naturally, there is no real forced conflict like many romance/rom coms rely on to make the ending feel worth it. It's just overall a good movie in all the ways it matters. Love watching people experience it for the first time, and loved your reaction! Will definitely be checking out more of your reactions :)

The infamous "Twinkie" Defense. Horrible! I was not really a fan of Sean Penn. But his role in this movie, and his work in Haiti changed my mind. I think he is a good person. The nutcases have taken over again, As a Jew and the father of a trans child I fear for our future.

Watching this for the first time at nine years old I still believed in Santa and the magic of Christmas. The next day I found out my 25 year old brother had committed suicide and the funeral was the day before Christmas eve. It's been rather challenging to get into the holiday spirit ever since.

Fun fact: we were *this* 🤏 close to getting Muppet Lord of the Rings but Jim Henson knew it was too big for 1 movie and he didn't think anyone would want to watch 3 Muppet LotR movies so he did Dark Crystal instead This truly is the worst timeline. That would've been so amazing.

This is rather an older review, but you mention never having seen Robin Williams in a "not-funny" role. Robin Williams was one of the most talented actors in Hollywood history and had incredible versatility. I hope you have by now, or plan to see: Good Will Hunting Good Morning Vietnam What Dreams May Come Awakenings The World According to Garp Actually, just see all his movies because even in his comedy roles, there lie deeper meanings. Hook was about a man who had essentially lost his soul in his pursuit of success (seemingly a common theme among boomers in the 80s and 90s) and had to rediscover his childhood identity in order to open himself up to loving his own children. Silly as the film may have been, as a child, I saw my own parents in Peter (before he went back to Neverland) and often wished they would remember who they were and what it was like to be a kid cuz there was some serious disconnect and I'm sure I'm not the only millenial with boomer parents to have felt that growing up.

The black underclass has no real interest in this kind of film. Talk show host Jennifer Hudson is from the black, non intellectual class. They do not like the intellectual or analytical class of black people. Steve Harvey, Martin Lawrence and Jennifer Hudson and Sherri . These black people represent the black under class. 47:06 . They're passions are, jewelry, flashy clothing , trivial events and Baptist Church culture. They are incapable of real depth. Although I don't always agree with her, Candace Owens is the only black intellectual realist I see on American Television. They will only allow 1 or 2.. Malcolm X was also an intellectual realist. This is one of the reasons he was murdered by The Nation of Islam.
