Even I, who has long time been a die-hard fan of BTTF and who even thinks the cartoon was not that bad, thought this was the weakest of the three movies. However, there has always been one thing in particular about this movie's plot that baffled me that I have never heard comment on anywhere, not even in this review: When the cops in the future found Jennifer in the alley - why wouldn't Doc have thought to just send Marty claiming to be Marty from the future? Worst case scenario, the cops would have asked for his thumb ID and he would have been ID' as Martin McFly just like what happened with Jennifer. Then they probably would have left Jennifer in the custody of her "husband," Marty, Jan and Doc could have left right there and Biff would have never gotten the opportunity to steal the time machine. It's one of the biggest plot holes I've seen in any film and yet no one else has ever brought it up.
@qazmko227 жыл бұрын
Doc was trying to reduce their effect on the future, and they took Jennifer before thy could save Jennifer.
@bucwhovian83057 жыл бұрын
They explain that in the film the Doc says something along the line of "they would think we were crazy". I don't see why what you are suggesting would have happened is at all likely. I think it’s more likely they would have been arrested for fraud. Also Doc didn't know about Biff's plan to steal the time machine.
@rowdycmoore7 жыл бұрын
He said they'd be committed if they told the cops they were time travelers. I'm saying, all they would have had to do was say Marty was Jennifer's husband. It was just explained the cops assumed Jennifer was the one from 2015 because of her thumbprint ID, which never changes over the years. So the same thing would have happened had they asked Marty for HIS thumbprint ID, and without the real 2015 Marty around, how could they prove fraud? They would have no choice but to assume they were dealing with 2015 Marty, they probably would have just made another joke about how they keep themselves young and whatnot, and that would be the end of it. Yeah, Doc didn't know Biff was after the time machine at the time, but this likely would have still been a much simpler idea than sneaking into future Marty's home and risking all that paradox stuff he rambled about, so they could have avoided that AND Biff would have never gotten his chance at the same time.
@bucwhovian83057 жыл бұрын
rowdycmoore it seems pretty risky to me to claim you are someone 30 years older than you are. The thumbprint thing might have worked but if fake IDs are a thing now, fake thumb print could be a thing in that future. Sneaking into there house at least means they don't have to interact with anyone and there arouse any kind suspicion. If Biff doesn't steal the time machine there is no story, the film would just end with them heading back to 1985 and there would be no third film either. Plus Doc didn't know about his plan and didn't notice anyone following them so he had no reason to think he had to stop him from taking it.
@simplysteve686 жыл бұрын
Buc Whovian yes there was a point on their way to Marty and Jennifer's house to retrieve her, that Doc looked in his face visor and said "for a moment, it looked like we were being followed".

Another problem is with Jennifer and Einstein when they are left in 1985 in the third act. If Marty and doc fix time, Jennifer and the dog should not remain in this time period. They should erase from the alternate 1985 and basically be reborn at the dates they were born. Having no knowledge of anything. Doc even said that alternate 1985s future would be different from the regular future. This means that 1955s future can change as well. And be different. This means that Jennifer will erase from existence in that time line. Because the alternate 1985 no longer exists. Marty and doc didn’t vanish because they have a time machine.

The biggest problem with this movie (and in no way am I faulting the Bobs for this, as you point out, they had no idea they would ever be making a sequel to BTTF), is that it doesn't feel like there's much going on in terms of plot, but rater it feels more like Marty and Doc are playing a new round of Mad Libs/improv every 5 minutes. But, again, not the Bobs' fault, this can be blamed on Universal wanting to milk as much money out of BTTF as possible. According to Michael J. Fox, the Bobs submitted one of their first drafts of the screenplay to BTTF II to the studio heads, and in it, they wanted to spend the first half of the movie in the future (2015) and the second half in the Old West (1885). However, back in 1987/1988, the studio heads were much more tight-fisted with their money than they are now, and said that that would have required expensive set-building for each one of those settings, and there was no way they would green-light a single movie with two expensive set designs. The Bobs pleaded to have their way, reminding them that the first movie was one of the biggest box office hits at the time, so the studio heads made a compromise: "We'll give you your two expensive set designs if you give us two movies. Your proposed idea for BTTF II must now become BTTF II and BTTF III." The Bobs reluctantly agreed to this.

and still i am moved to the emission of spittle... spittle, i tell you!... at the suggestion that biff was a "loser" at the end of the first movie. quite the contrary. he's a self-made man running his own business, and he even has swag, so you know he's doing well. the point was that finally being shown some limits gave biff _direction_. at the end of the first movie, he appears to be a happy, fulfilled, actualized person in a good, worthwhile life surrounded by people who respect and support him (regardless of what you personally think of auto detailing as an employment option. you must imagine sisyphus happy). but yes, i agree with you that old biff in the second movie is not consistent with that. in "reality", he would likely be a successfully retired businessman and a pillar of his community. it _does_ however lend credence to the idea of a middle aged biff having been pushed to avarice. it was in his character all along. in the "second" timeline, the right hook didn't take because old biff had already given young biff a way out of learning his lesson. biff essentially destroyed his own life, but i agree with you that biff at the end of the first movie never would have done what biff at the start of the second movie does because biff at the end of the first movie has no motivation to be unkind to marty, not because he's "spineless" or "meek", but because marty is _his best friend's son_. EDIT: maybe not "best friend". i note at the end of the first movie, biff calls george "mr. mcfly". not exactly indicative of a close friendship. george does, however, mention that biff has been around him and his family ever since high school, giving biff number one even _less_ reason to mistreat marty _or_ marty's children, because he'd have known _all_ of them their whole lives.
@tajniak43352 жыл бұрын
The whole premise of Part II of going to the future to help Marty's kids is ridiculous. I mean, travel in time to change events which haven't happened yet is just... stupid. They haven't happened yet, it seems like there should be a far easier way to change future than traveling in time...

I actually think this movie is very good, but it has a few issues. I think many themes in the trilogy repeat themselves because that was the point. As time changes the more things stay the same and that was the idea. That despite the changes people are still going to be who they are. Biff's character in the beginning of the film, was never the friends of George McFly, he was just indebt to him waxing his cars. The inconsistency in my mind is why you have someone waxing your car who also tried to molest your wife. But the point was trying to see that even though Biff was nice in the beginning, he still had the tendency to be dishonest if he had the chance, which he did when presented with the sports almanac. I thought towards the end when they came upon scenes that already occurred, like revisiting the 1950s high school dance, and revisiting the clock tower again was an interesting perspective, and even see characters from the first film. When the De Lorian was electrocuted sending Doc back to the 1800s, then the car arrives with a letter from Doc from the 1880s. That was pretty cool.

The biggest thing I dislike about this review is the absolute misjudgment of Biff in the first movie. He was about to crush Marty or run him over with his car and if it wasn’t for George, he would have raped Lorraine. I think his portrayal in Part II was accurate to say the least.
@jk-4744 жыл бұрын
The Biff complaints aren’t accurate to me. After getting a Sports Almanac that’s been proven to be legit, even after that punch from George, Biff would have the means for financial gain to buy power while getting revenge on George and using that power to take what he wanted by force. It 100% makes sense to me, the grouchy Biff in the future shows that he still thought he could intimidate those below him. He just doesn’t stand up to people who tower above him in power, but when the tables switched with the book it all makes sense. Part 2 is epic!

It's a movie I can watch and enjoy, but man is it all over the place. Thank God it has the pace it has. I'm curious to the re-review. This is very different from Star Trek The motion Picture, which is a WTF picture for me. That is I don't understand how I can watch Star Trek The Motion Picture and enjoy it, but somehow I do. Not many movies fall into that category. B

Some of your points are good but others I would have to argue. Biff clearly wanted to marry Lorraine so he could use her as his sex object. It's also clear that biff became more confident and less cowardly when he became the most powerful man in hill valley. His anger and jealousy towards George mcfly being married to Lorraine made him furious and since he now had control over the police he could easily kill George and get away with it. The climax is really cool because we get to see the first film from a different point of view.

Honestly my biggest complaint with the sequel is that the biggest thing at stake was the absolutely awesome plot of the first movie. You're right, I don't care in the slightest if the universe unravels, but I absolutely dreaded the idea of the characters from the second movie interfering with George Mcfly punching Biff in the face. I just wanted them to leave the beautiful 1955 timeline alone. Messing it up takes away from rewatching the original, since you know that in the grand plot of the series, those events were actually erased.
