Everyone gives little credit for all the analog effects in the trilogy. They want to talk about the actors and the car and blah blah blah. The production of these two videos were nicely done and spoke heavily on the most important part of the films besides Bob Gale, Industrial Light and Magic. Absolutely Bravo here. This was very well put together. Every diehard Back to the Future fan that appreciates the production standpoint (the real fans) should appreciate this set of videos to the highest regard. Thank you.

3:30 You accurately CGI'd something I find maddening about movies and TV shows, which is that the actors always use empty cups. It's dead obvious the cups are empty, because the physics of an empty cup are completely different from those of a full cup (and even more so from a partially full cup).
@kaitlyn__L5 ай бұрын
I find the empty cup preferable to the times there’s actual water in there though. Which does happen now and then, presumably by a director who noticed it wasn’t moving right or wanted to force the actors to swallow before saying their lines. Spotting a glimpse of cold, viscous, clear liquid breaks my immersion more than having to assume the cup is halfway empty. Even rarer is actual coffee or tea, hot and steaming, but I’ve seen it maybe half a dozen times. Usually just for the pour/serve shot, rather than for the drinking, but occasionally the actor must’ve gotten it in only a couple takes because it’s still visibly steaming while they sip. (And that makes the tiny sips believable too!)

2:48 The slate is giving me a headache. My first guess was you had someone raise a real slate from below and then masked him/her out. Then Ami was animated to match the slate's position. But then I noticed the shadow of the slate on her shirt, which means something additional had to be done... You could've done it manually, it's just some rectangular shape. But you also could've tracked a 3d model of a slate to match the position of the real slate, then turn off all the textures so that only the shadow is cast. But then I noticed the shadow of Ami's fingers on the slate... Come on! Well, I don't think you did that manually. You did have a 3d slate in there somehow. And if you had a 3d model in there, you could actually change between the two on the fly. But I can see fingerprints and smudges on the black part of the slate even when Ami's holding it and I don't think you'd go that far with texturing. Especially since you'd have to make those smudges match the real slate you're holding (I think it's a real slate, it looks very much real in your hands and you hold it so comfortably). So the 3d model slate is probably invisible all the way through and we're only seeing the real one. So I'm thinking you had a 3d model of a slate tracked to the position of a real slate that we see. You had to mask the slate where Ami's fingers are so that it looks like she's holding it (unless you can do that with some arcane rendering technique in your 3d software - I don't know very much about cgi at all). Then you cast Ami's shadow on the 3d model slate but you didn't render the slate, only Ami's shadow - as a transparent layer of course, otherwise it couldn't be composited on the real slate (unless you played with opacity/layer modes). And vice versa, you also rendered the shadow of the invisible slate on Ami. Please tell me I got it right, I spent like half an hour on this.
@someonewithsomename5 жыл бұрын
The slate is real all the way. I don't see if it was moving on the set for the first part or is it stationary and the movement done in post later. My guess it's the second one. So basically, the slate is static all the way in the shot, than the guy picks it. The 3d character is animated with a 3d slate so that the final part is roughly matching the position of a stationary real slate in the end of animation. Than, textures from the real slate are comped into 3d slate to make the transition seamless. It least that's how I would have done that in the controlled independent environment. To make it work on the real production set, I would probably go with the first option - the real person on set holding the slate and interacting with the actor.

What i noticed...and i don't know nuffin except this guy is a tricky fella....light angles on him and the girl are slightly different...his more horizontal , hers slightly higher...and the camera moves after he takes the slate...and the corner of the room is the divider between them....i also noticed maybe...a slight distortion in her right hand...but that could be cgi...i dunno....he's a slippery one....but i do like his stuff!!

My best guess from the comments and pausing and playing certain parts is that the girl actually came to film on location or they had a stand in and then they composited the avatar over them. Pause at 2:50 and look at her left hand (our right). You can tell that it was a physical slate being held by a stand in (or Ami herself) and then the cgi was layered over it.

As somebody who does visual effects and even though I know how all this process was done, it's still great to watch, and love how professionally you explain it. The outside shot with the two Biff's. Must have been the toughest challenge when you consider the light changing of time of day. Matching that, though it's not 100% obviously, still works very well. If you watch the scene very closely when both Biff's are in the car, as the camera zooms in, you can see the plates wobble ever so slightly a bit, but you have to look very closely to notice. Also the later shot when Marty says no thanks to Biff, a couple of frames, will see his hat disappear over the cut line. But again unless you're really into visual effects most people don't notice these things. But I love the old school visual effects.

I was floored when you got to the very end of part two and talked about the lamp post scene! That has always been my favorite visual effect in the entire trilogy! I was waiting for you to mention it the entire time. Great videos.

I really like all the production that the Cap puts into these! It's really cool that he can create the same VFX of anything he reviews and also adds his own touch. You can tell he thinks critically about any VFX he sees and even comes up with his own way to do it.

I love it when geeks can geek out over their favorite thing. It's great that you're not a stuffy technician only concerned with technical methods, but you actually love the epic story too.

In Hollywood, you either got to know someone, or be willing to get on the "casting couch" in order to make it. And honestly, in recent years, some of the things that I've seen here on KZbin are *much more entertaining and enjoyable* than the woke garbage that Tinseltown has been churning out lately. (I'm looking at you, Cinemassacre.)

Of all the BTTF content we have taken in over the years, this quickly skyrocketed to the top. Even moreso than much of the behind-the-scenes Blu-Ray content. Well done as always!!

It blows my mind how much sophistication and work went into making things work that you barely or just don’t think about when watching the film. It never occurred to me to wonder how MJ Fox was in the same scenes playing multiple characters. I just dumbly watched those scenes with suspended disbelief.

You are awesome! The amount of time and dedication you provide on your films (because calling them videos is an insult) is mind-blowing not to mention your storytelling is off the charts. You are educating and entertaining man, love it.

7:38 great scott I was waiting for the video to end to talk about this scene this is the best scene, the most invisible effect, the most cool one as I got older and beginning to know more about movies, I was so pleased with myself when I noticed how this scene was made I love Back to the Future too and I actually have a very nice video about it on my channel thanks for this bro ☺☺☺

Its been said multiple times already in the comments but how no one has tried to sign your talent into a TV series is beyond me! You and your team are incredibly talented. How I wish all "behind the scenes" in DVDs was as entertaining as this was!

7:50 YES! I remember thinking this shot looks really good for what it is. Like, you can tell that the car was partially vfx, but as soon as it passes behind the pole, it's back to normal. Such a brilliantly seamless shot.

Given it's been two years, I'm sad this series (of VFX breakdowns of film) never got a second entry. That said, Allen, I love your work. I find myself binging the entire CD series every 6months or so. Each time I reach the end disappointed there is not more to watch, but grateful for the work that's been done. I wistfully move on, having watched every video, and forget ab CD until 6months later, a video comes up on my feed, and I find myself joyfully falling down the rabbit hole again. You do fantastic work. The writing is creative, independent, and interesting. Each time I return to this space, I gain a little more of the detail you pack into your episodes. Most recently, I've been taken by the voice of this program. The way you, as a creator, have things you want to say. I never feel like your episodes are solely about breaking down vfx. They could be about the arrogance that drives people to want to know how something is done, or greed that makes someone want to hide how something is done, or the incredible ingenuity that goes into making effects for both amateurs and professionals alike. I appreciate you, Allen. The world you managed to build. The format you have stayed remarkably flexible with. And your commitment to being interesting -and interesting to your own taste- over being formulaic, cynical, or snide. Thank you for building such a wonderful product and committing to it over so many years. I'm sure this has come with so many sacrifices. I hope you deem them to have been worth it. I sure am grateful you made the time. You've taught me a lot about film, camera work, and how those things might fit into a larger world. And, while I'm at it, when you introduced your mini-educational series on things like interlacing, color, and frame rate, I was beaming ear to ear! You are exactly the person I would want to learn from regarding those topics! And the lessons absolutely held up remaining some of the clearest, concisest, best demonstrated introductory discussions of topics I have ever found. Like I said at the top, I enjoy rewatching your work. So, when it comes to this vfxcool series that never was, I wish there were more entries. But, I don't wish for anything that's outside of your artistic vision. Because what you've chosen to pursue and create using this character has always been surprising, fulfilling, and fun to watch. I hope you keep going buddy. Thanks for what you've built and shared. I'm excited to see what you want to see made real next.
@hsm49834 жыл бұрын
Addendum: I don't want to sell the educational videos short. The series designed specifically to teach about color, interlacing, etc. I LOVE that series. I guess what I'm saying is if you only have so many hours in a day, I hope you keep making what interests you, bc so far, that's been incredibly interesting to me. I'm not meaning to indict or diminish any existing mini series or any series that was chosen over another one. I'm sure there were reasons for it. And sincerely, the recent educational video segment is awesome. It's been so helpful. I love it and hope there are more topics to come.
