For anyone wondering, the section from 8:04 - 8:33 was entirely replaced. Not a copyright issue, the information provided is actually different. I didn't really understand the explanation the first time around, but the claim was something about how physical shutters can't cause the rolling shutter effect. The section also started out "thats how I know you haven't been paying attention." I was, indeed, paying attention.
@kisaragi-hiu10 ай бұрын
Thanks for pointing us to the new section! IMO the new explanation is much better: the old one asserted that the mechanical shutter is exposing to the same frame but CMOS is staggered, which doesn't actually make sense, and I instead relied on information from later parts of the video to learn what the new version says.

I build camera systems (yes, with a rolling shutter sensor) and this video is absolutely spot-on. Readout time in a CMOS sensor is a big deal, but you can't always minimize it due to the digital interface on the sensor not being able to push out bits fast enough, the camera processor not being able to read them in fast enough, or due to link constraints (signal integrity problems associated with "long" cable runs in some applications; story of my life right now). In many cases, rolling shutter artifacts (or camera motion artifacts) are corrected via electronic stabilization. The camera will have a gyroscope rigidly mounted to the lens/sensor, which records the exact motion of the lens while the sensor is capturing a frame. After the frame is read in (but before it is compressed), the camera processor will use the gyro data to move every row of the image in the correspondingly opposite direction, to line them back up again. This works for both camera shake and for the rolling-shutter artifacts associated with high-speed camera vibration (the dreaded "jello" effect), but it requires very precise synchronization between the frame read-out and the gyro data. Unfortunately, this technique only works for correcting rotational motion of the *camera* - if the subject is moving, there is nothing you can do. This also requires somewhat cropping the image, to give yourself enough "play" to perform the correction, and it creates additional processing overhead (more battery usage, more heat, etc). Still, this technique can work very well, if competently implemented. Your phone and goproes will generally do this. The computational overhead is usually mitigated by the camera processor having some form of hardware acceleration for doing the crop/warp operation. Although global shutter sensors exist, you can't easily get them in high enough resolution (at least in consumer/mobile applications) to use as a main camera. Computer vision people absolutely love em though, because you know that every pixel represents exactly the same moment in time. This makes it easy to correlate data from successive frames, for tracking/motion estimation. You'll typically find global-shutter cameras in robotics and as tracking cameras in VR headsets, for this reason. One downside of global shutter is not being able to expose *any* pixel on the sensor, while any readout is taking place. I guess that's the _point_, but it limits your maximum exposure duration to exclude the readout time (which, for a large frame, can be substantial). This, in turn, will reduce your low-light performance. I've seen 8k sensors where readout takes almost 1/30s to complete, which would leave very little time for actual exposure, if this were a global-shutter sensor running at 30FPS. You'd have to increase your ISO to compensate, which would increase your noise. Your video mentions an 8k global-shutter camera with a 3ms readout - this is very impressive and probably has a crazy data link to the sensor. For comparison, the camera in most modern phones would need closer to 30ms (10x that) for an 8k readout. A DSLR, by the way, wouldn't care about the readout - you start exposing all the pixels, let the mechanical shutter start and (effectively) stop the exposure, then take your sweet time pulling data off the sensor because the pixels aren't going to be accumulating any more light. Mirrorless and motion cameras, on the other hand, are another story. One fun fact about these CMOS sensors is that the exposure duration is actually programmed in LINES, not seconds. Basically, the sensor can "un-reset" a line of pixels any time it wants (this will begin exposure of those pixels) and the exposure will continue until that line is read out (there's no way to "pause" exposure of a line once exposure has begun). When you program the exposure duration into the sensor, you're actually telling the sensor how far "ahead" of the currently-read-out line to begin exposure of the next set of pixels. That is, if you program an exposure duration of 40 lines, the sensor will begin exposing line 50 as soon as it begins reading out line 10. The readout is actually driven by the sensor (not by the camera processor) and occurs on a known/fixed cadence; the software just has to take the desired shutter speed and convert into a line count before passing this to the sensor. At least, this is how it works for MIPI cameras in consumer electronics.
@0LoneTech10 ай бұрын
If you're not terribly worried about noise (hello cooled sensor astrophoto friends), with BSI sensors there seems very little reason not to add pipelining to allow continuous readout during exposure. The global end of exposure time would transfer measurements to sample and hold circuits which are scanned during the next exposure. I believe that's what CD alluded to with those extra capacitors shown in this video.
@evil-wombat10 ай бұрын
@@0LoneTech yeah, sample and hold would certainly do it. Reset all the pixels, let them expose, transfer all charge to the capacitors, begin the next exposure. Meanwhile, take your sweet time doing A/D and readout on the previous exposure that's being held. It would make for a more complicated pixel, but it would work. And your shutter "down time" would only need to be long enough to perform the sample/hold/reset, not the conversion or readout.

The dedication to quality, consistency and accuracy is unrivaled. I also feel, that CD is the only one that is with one foot still in the 90s vibe of television, which is a lost art, and pulls it off in the next century. As a silent echo of once, but in 8K crisp resolution.

Good video and thanks for crediting NASA/JPL. A global-shutter version of the CMOS image sensor was in our earliest patents, almost 30 years ago, btw, and further refined at Photobit. But no one wanted the accompanying loss in either photosensitivity or resolution (due to larger pixel size). Backside-illuminated devices and 3D stacked devices rekindled an interest in global shutter architectures and made them more sellable. Keep up the good work! EF

There are a few channels left on KZbin that do not try and post every freaking day and water down good content with garbage. This channel has to be one of the best content creators out there in terms of quality production and education. Your videos are entertaining and informative. The community sincerely appreciates all the hard work that you're put into making these videos. And we love you.

There are some prototype continuous sensors, where each pixel is just constantly reading out when it gets smacked with a particle. You get huuuge dynamic range with them. Much closer to how our visual system works.

The amount of work that went into this video is why Captain Disillusion is one of the best. The density of visuals on each shot is mind-boggling, as somebody who has been doing a lot of video editing for the last two years. That's not even getting into the detail put into the audio. My brother and I watched this video together (I don't think he's seen this channel before) and he came away super impressed with the whole thing

Huge Respect to you captain for re-uploading, not sure which part was changed (Perhaps that means I didn't pay attention enough) but I'm glad you always side with providing accurate information in such a fun and creative format. A re-upload gives me an excuse to re watch again and retain the information better I suppose, ahaha Your initial upload definitely incuredged me to look more into retro technology so that's always a win, keep up making the passion to learn new things exciting, Thank you Captain!
@BetaDude4010 ай бұрын
It's funny you said "I didn't pay attention enough" because that was one of the changes lol. It seems the only major changes were from 8:04 to 8:30 -- He completely changed the explanation of how mechanical shutter versus CMOS works and why there is less rolling shutter effect. Previously he tried to explain it as a bunch of cameras all stacked vertically on top of each other and synchronized to snap at the same time, which didn't really make sense because that analogy can also be applied to mechanical shutter. The new explanation is more concise and is just that mechanical shutter is generally much faster than the electronic readout. -- He removed the part at the beginning where he sarcastically says "This is how I know you're not paying attention," which I assume came off a little too asshole-y, even for the cynical character that he plays in his videos
@djcjfxyz535110 ай бұрын
@BetaDude40 I was hoping someone would notice my use of that line, ehehe I thought it was funny the first time I watched it since I have a visual memory, but if I'm not paying attention and there's lack of a memory it's a good indication I drifted off somewhere, ahaha Now that you point out the differences, the new explanation does indeed make more sense. I remember vaguely thinking it sounded too similar of an example initially. Thanks for pointing that out.
