Great video. I hadn't seen that Demo before. If anyone had seen that in 1980 they wouldn't have believed it was possible. It's interesting how software technology has advanced even with the same hardware.

Thanks! Agreed about this demo being so amazing. I love that it uses stock PET hardware. The only requirement is having 32KB of memory and a piezo speaker for the CB2 sound. It was originally written with the 4032 in mind, however since my 2001-N has 32KB memory and I'm using the sweet PET Tricks Module, people like me with only a PET 2001-N can enjoy it too!

@@geekwithsocialskills Yes, this would be about 1980 or 81 I saw it. And I was very much going to the arcades to play space invaders at the time. To me, at the time, the PET version was just as good. And free if I stayed late at school to play!

A perfect reason to stay after school, to play Space Invaders for free on the PET computer! BITD a friend of mines family owned an arcade, so I was lucky enough to get some free play action on various arcade machines.

Awesome video! I’m always amazed at what these machines could do beyond what we thought was possible back in their heyday. Makes me want a PET!

I bet Jack Tramiel founder of Commodore Business Machines (CBM) and Chuck Peddle never imagined the PET computer having a program like this run on it.

This demo is amazing! Shiru8bit did a great job with the graphics and sound for sure! It was originally made for the PET 4032 since that has 32KB of memory and a piezo speaker, however since I upgraded my PET 2001-N to 32KB memory and use the Stupid PET Tricks module that allows me to connect an external speaker, I can enjoy the CB2 sound and run this demo.

Not a bad idea. It's so amazing what people are able to pull off on a 40+ year old computer using basically stock hardware.

That's mind-blowing! The graphics part of the demo is impressive in it's own right, but the voice synthesis at the end? -Chef's Kiss!- Never would have believed a stock Pet (SD card adapter notwithstanding) would have been capable of this.
@geekwithsocialskills
@geekwithsocialskills Жыл бұрын
Indeed! Only the PET makes it possible LOL! All of this awesome on a stock PET computer. Even though I used my SD card adapter (PET2SD) you can load the program from a real disk drive or even a cassette drive. I own both, but honestly using the PET2SD solution is a lot nicer these days.

There is indeed a lot of code involved. The developer includes the source code in the download, so you can check it out if you want. I have the link in my description to download it.

It amazes me that this demo runs on a stock PET computer. The only requirement is 32KB of RAM and BASIC 4.0 which all PET's can be upgraded to. Of course with the PET 2001 models you need to either do the CB2 sound modification since there isn't a piezo speaker (those came later in the 40xx series and above) or use the Stupid PET Tricks module like I did that has the CB2 sound with external speaker option and upgrade the RAM.
