“If this isn’t collapse, what is.” Those words from Dennis Meadows still echo in our heads. Now how do we do what is needed for our common survival, if the current system doesn’t let us turn in the right direction?
A short @We Love Earth documentary made for the Dutch Club of Rome. Here’s our own starting point, and what we’ve learned ourselves:
We were born when industrialisation had long started. CO2 was already around 340 ppm. Not yet ‘dangerous’ - but a clear indication things were already spinning out of control. When we were born The Limits to Growth had already been written, published - and shaken the world.
Sometimes though, shaking a world is not enough. That Limits to Growth author Dennis Meadows shares with us, some 45 years later. If our system was capable of performing the necessary change, it would have happened already - decades ago. Now it’s 2017, resources have further declined, more species are extinct, the income gap has increased, the Arctic winter is 20 degrees Celsius hotter than normal - although no one remembers what normal is.
There is a new generation though. More people joining the global movement for survival. Working on the foundation of knowledge of all those before us, they want to find a different route, a route that may leave our system, but that does lead back to our shared source.
We would like to explicitly thank Dennis Meadows. It was an honor to interview a man that played such a big guiding role to humanity in 1972, and still does so today.
