An investigation into how teenagers from Central America were smuggled into the U.S. by traffickers who promised them jobs and a better life - only to force them to live and work in virtual slavery to pay off their debt.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate
“Trafficked in America,” produced by Daffodil Altan and Andrés Cediel, with Altan as correspondent, shines light on a major labor trafficking case in which Guatemalan teens were forced by a third party contractor to work against their will at a farm in Ohio. Through the lens of this case, the documentary presents a look inside the reality of labor trafficking in America.

It actually has been a focus for this past administration but little to no notice because "orange man bad" is more important than shining a light on the success and headway that was made and how much work still needs to be done to continue this humanitarian work. January is human trafficking month. There were quite a few busts over the summer but again too much of mainstream media did not want to show it. Just search for human and child trafficking on Duck Duck Go rather than Google.

@lmdeboom
@lmdeboom 3 жыл бұрын
And even with legal documents, people are still subjected to some abuse. I was on an H1B visa when I came here. They told the Department of Labor I will be paid 17 dollars an hour, which was the prevailing wage for my profession at that time. However, my employer just paid 12 dollars an hour. I worked 6 days a week, and my hours were crazy. I cannot leave that job because not many are willing to petition for the H1B visa, and I can only just work for the employer who sponsored the visa. My parents paid a recruiter a year's worth of salary for me to give up and go home. I know my situation was still better than the people in the documentary. I was thinking then that if I can get abused with legal documentation, how much worse they could treat those without.

@shruti ss If we loosen restrictions most people would use the border crossings. This would count down on the amount of people trying to sneak across the border. The only ones that would be trying to sneak are traffickers and this would make them much easier to catch. As it is right now, we are spending way to many resources catching people just seeking a better life crossing illegally meanwhile the criminals are slipping through the cracks. You know the cartels use migrants as a distraction. Not saying open borders and have no restrictions but loosen them so we can have managed flow

I used to work as a delivery driver in the midwest, delivering to facilities like this. I could never make sense of what I was seeing there, until now. I wondered, how did these foreigners end up in the middle of nowhere, not able to speak a lick of english, working in sandals and clothes that look like they came out of an elementary school lost and found, living in abandoned trailers and old farm houses, just like the ones in this documentary. Like all cruelties of men, this is more prevalent than anyone would suspect, and hiding in plain sight.

I pray you are beyond those circumstances and in a better place, and are never again pressed to meet your needs. I once had a pair of good shoes stolen after setting them outside to dry, I was upset because I paid more than I normally would because they were good shoes and I liked them, and I was not well off. When I mentioned the theft of my shoes to a very wise, older woman in my family she simply said, "I guess someone really needed shoes." In that moment my perspective changed, I had the ability to just put on another pair of shoes - the things we take for granted...

He had to live with 3 or 4 family's and he only got minimum wage and I know he sent HALF his money to his family in Mexico. He had no car so I picked him up everyday so he didn't have to worry about that anymore but I wished I could have done more for him and his family but I had a family just like his and I couldn't afford to give him money. I never asked if he needed money but I knew he did. It's just so sad when you work side by side with a good Man and I made more money than he did. Sad. Jose was the best partner I've ever had and what a wonderful worker he was. I pray for all the good people of Mexico. I can't go on because I'm crying to hard to see anymore. God bless you all

As Americans we need to care about where our products come from and be willing to pay more for our goods and services to support humane conditions. But corruption is widespread, there will always be plenty of people willing to undercut prices by doing horrible things to save money on production - it's all greed. And we see in this video the first line of wickedness is committed by people who come from the same place as these trafficked children - the greed is so powerful they sell their own into this slavery it is almost beyond comprehension how someone could treat any child in this way, but from your very own community? Your own neighbors? I struggle to wrap my head around any of this. So much of the comfortable lifestyle enjoyed in the US is made available on the broken backs of the trafficked and enslaved poor.

Right now, and for the past three years the US border is being crushed due to our politicians politicizing immigration and pandering to a few ignorant voters who think open borders are a good idea - our government knows full well the extent of this trafficking problem yet they are permitting how many hundreds of thousands to walk right in - many of them children? The number is probably at a million by now - while the foolish Americans praise this insanity and label anyone who supports legal and controlled immigration, and secure borders as "racist." How many more children have been placed into the same conditions seen in this video since this border crush began? Labor trafficking, sex trafficking, and young people turning to the streets to survive, being subject to all forms of unspeakable abuse as a result of US politics (unadulterated greed for money and power by an elite few), and the average US voter is silent and spending their money on products churned out by child slaves. We are all the problem here.

Us atheists clearly don't believe that and if you're wrong and there is no hell... Then those who commit such evil will never have to pay for their crimes. That's why as an atheist I think it's so important to find these people and bring them to justice. They belong in prison to rot in a cage for the rest of their lives. Our government needs to oversee businesses far better. I've worked at many different jobs and there was never government officials ever that would come and check to make sure the business owners weren't breaking any laws. The problem is that most people won't report their business owner out of fear of losing their job which means losing your livelihood. They say your job can't fire you for being a whistleblower but the truth is, they'll just make your life even more miserable and eventually they'll make up some other reason to fire you. My last job, my boss was a rich prick who broke every law you could think of. We weren't allowed breaks, he'd skim off our paychecks, he'd make people work off the clock, he'd make people do work they aren't qualified for like us retail workers having to fix electrical issues with the lights and other dangerous things, we had to use hazardous chemicals and he wouldn't offer us any masks or an eye wash station or anything like that. Worst of all he'd make managers work an extra day a week and then pay them in "commission" instead of paying them the overtime they deserve by law. This job was clearly a walk in the park compared to what these poor people in human trafficking had to deal with of course, but my point is that we need more oversight on businesses. There's this myth in the USA that small business owners and business owners in general are somehow great decent people and that we should always protect them at all costs. The truth is, they're people like anyone else so there's some good ones and some really fucking shitty ones. There needs to be more oversight on businesses. They need to be regularly checked to see if they're breaking any laws. The good business owners have nothing to fear, the shitty ones should be penalized like they deserve.

They were so scared. I said to them "you can get one on one help from a financial aid office" I got such a negative attitude like I was committing a crime or something. Something wasnt right. I came up to the librarian asked her if she found this to be weird. She nodded. I wont be surprised that something like that is going on.

I worked on a farm in Southern Alabama when I was 14. It was my first job, about 2 miles down a dirt near the house we were living in at that time. When I got there on the First day I was kind of surprised to see 7 guys there already. Thinking what am I here for if you already have this much help. The farmer was doing my paps a favor by letting me work for $5 an hour, so I just shrugged it off. As I worked there over the next few weeks I began to notice things. I also became friends with the grandson that lives on the farm as well, my age, but didn't work with us. I'd ask him about these Mexicans, he'd correct me, Guatemalans. There was this old, run down farm house I would bsee them go inside of throughout the day. He told me that they all live there. He could tell I was thinking along this train of thought that these guys were being mistreated. So I was told to stay away from that house by this grandson on my first day. He now tells me to follow him and help move these coup cages over to the coups. Instead of doing that we detoured to the old house. He opened the door on the other side of the house so I could see inside. It was only thin mattresses, dirty, and old weathered wood walls, floors with a cooler and a 5 gallon bucket in the corner. I'd brought it up to him that it was difficult working behind them most days, because they smelled so bad. He tells me now, "do you see something missing." I say "yeah, everything." "Well yeah, but more importantly there's no power, or water run to this old rickety place. They run an extension cord and a box heater during the cold months. They take a bath out back of the barn on Saturday. So every day you work with them, they already smell. You also make more than three of them put together. The youngest makes nothing." He did not like that it was happening, but he was to young to realize how bad it was until last year when the other's left and these guys showed up. I didn't come back to work on that farm after that day. My dad didn't believe me, and was really upset over me quitting. I was supposed to get on my bike and go back the next morning. I took all the food we had to spare and gave it to the oldest guy. They didn't speak English, but he understood that I knew now what was going on, and that I wouldn't be back. He gestured they were ok, I nodded and gave him a hug. I knew his name, Fransisco is what they called him. I pointed down that dirt road, and gestured the best I could that I lived at the end, to the left, two houses down. I took shit from my dad for a few weeks after that day. It was around October when they all showed up at our door. It was freezing. I looked at them, looked at my dad, and said come in Francisco, all of you. We'll figure something out soon. My dad was a preacher. We were only in this town for a year. We ended up putting them up in the church for the next two nights. Then got them a couple of rooms in the city. I don't know what happened to them after we left that town. I know that had a lot to do with why we left. Nothing was said about the trouble it put on my dad. He was ashamed about not believing me, and would only let me know they were ok.

It's coming to light but it makes no difference.

It does not seem like justice is ever served to those with money and power in America. It starts at the very tops of governments and works it's way down to the dregs of society. Human trafficking is a huge network and a world wide epidemic that applies to every country but I'm just going to discuss the problem in America. Lets start at the border. Many of those in government (congress) that scream the loudest for open borders, claiming they care about the children and people, are lying through their greedy little teeth. They don't want open borders because they want to offer people a better life. They want slave labor, children, sex workers, baby farms, organ harvesting, and drugs. An unsecure border make trafficking much easier and the border goes both ways. Human trafficking is a multi billion dollar a year business. Slave labor and low wage workers means more profits to business owners but babies and children bring in the big bucks. American's are not special. Oh No! We are all "fair game" to them. One million children in America go missing every year. Those are the ones that have names. Many are caught up in the system and just disappear. Trafficked people (babies to adults) from across the border, China, & other countries, are mostly untraceable. That makes them a little more valuable. Trump did not put children in cages because he's a mean person. He was protecting a lot them from traffickers who brought them over the border. Trump was one of the few presidents that was not a pedo and he could not be bought. He did make it more difficult and fought hard to prevent trafficking. He was on his own and surrounded by the enemy. A few small trafficking rings in the US were broken up and that's a good thing. However, I'm very disappointed that no one at the top involved in human trafficking was held accountable. Most busts involving human trafficking involve slave labor. But again, no one is held accountable. This particular bust covered in the video happened in 2014 and Obama new about it. Another investigation of that involved Hillary Clinton mentioned, Crimes against children. Nothing came of it. Crime does pay. forgive the typos. no time to edit.

On 1.6.2021 ANTIFA, BLM, & hired goons, supported by Soros, Dems, et al, were successful in turning the tide against Trump - with their Capitol break-in, which was well under way before Trump's speech ended at the WH. Thank you to all that participated to produce this documentary. It is not shocking that it happens but it is shocking it continues to happen in the country that claims to be s land if the free. The sad part of this situation is that, even if you show them this video to the future comers, they do not believe this could happen to them. Instead, they would say it is b/c you do not want them to have a better life. I know this because it also happens in my own country of African.

Glad viewers see human trafficking especially those being trafficked from Central America n a new light. But what is being done about the factory farm and conditions for these poor creatures? Was the SPCA or Humane Society called to investigate? These conditions and the inhumane treatment are some of the worst I have seen and I have seen many. Why I am vegan and rescue farm animals for the last 25 years. Thank you for making this documentary .

You do a poor job at concealing someone's identity when you show their clothes and identifiable marks on conspicuous parts of their body. I am thankful for the story and yes there are many people to be held accountable, but do not further put a child's life in danger by acknowledging that the child wants his identity to be concealed but still swiveling a camera around. Just blur the person entirely!

The part that people are ignoring here in the comment section is that this is going on in every country and we tolerate and fund it. Every time you buy something there is a bunch of exploited people making it. From the poor people sewing your garment and growing the cotton to the cashier in front of you. The only people who are punished for this in any real way are the people who are being exploited.

Nor do they realize that this easy lifestyle we all enjoy is on the broken backs of child slaves - we don't educate ourselves on where our products come from and we keep these traffickers in business. We don't pay attention to our politicians because we have been dumbed down by an education system designed by corrupt politicians to keep us uninformed and under control, and we're distracted by the nonsense that the controlled mainstream media presents to us to keep us away from the truth of important issues like human trafficking. Right now, and for the past three years the US border is being crushed due to our politicians politicizing immigration and pandering to a few ignorant voters who think open borders are a good idea - our government knows full well the extent of this trafficking problem, yet they are permitting how many hundreds of thousands to walk right in - many of them children? The number is probably at a million by now - while the foolish Americans praise this insanity and label anyone who supports legal and controlled immigration, and secure borders as "racist." How many more children have been placed into the same conditions seen in this video since this border crush began? Labor trafficking, sex trafficking, and young people turning to the streets to survive, being subject to all forms of unspeakable abuse as a result of US politics (unadulterated greed for money and power by an elite few), and the average US voter is silent and spending their money on products churned out by child slaves. We are all the problem here.

I worked for the biggest hog producer in Iowa at that time about 10 years ago. They started me out at 26,000 a year working 50 plus hours a week. I always worked extra and learned how to run the farrowing side blindfolded so to speak over a few years. My first lead worker did not speak any English but he could still train us with little problems. He was at 45,000 a year which was pretty good i thought. I.c.e. came and took him and a couple others after about 6 months of working at that farm. My 1st review came up, it was fairly low and I was told that I needed to step up my game more and learn Spanish to get a raise. I was a little upset at this. But none the less I asked a gal who was bilingual of Spanish decent to teach me something new every day. I was learning quite fast but an opportunity popped up closer to home. Instead of driving 45 miles to work I would only drive 10. So the new farm had one Spanish speaking worker and he got deported shortly after I arrived. His visa expired and he couldn't get it renewed. He was one hell of a worker so it sucked when he left. The farm was called a show farm so they had no illegals working there. After 3 years of Learning all the ropes I was turned down for raises everytime. I had recently split up with my ex wife and was order to pay 170 a week for child support. This was based off of my pay. My take home was 550 every 2 weeks. I asked for a raise one last time so I could stay with the company because I could not live off of what came out to be about $90 a week. They said there was nothing they could do. After a few months I got lucky working for another company at $14 an hour. To sum this up please stay away from companies that breed hogs, chickens, cows, etc. They will work you to death and pay you pennies. While they make millions you get the literal scraps no matter how much you know or how hard you work.

@Hás Starship7 That makes no sense, you make it sound as if it's the illegal workers fault...except its not. Its the company's choice to pay for cheap illegal labor, they (unlike the laborers) are not forced to use illegal laborers. In fact it is actually ILLEGAL to do so.
@georgeshaw9399
@georgeshaw9399 3 жыл бұрын
@Hás Starship7 Basic income yes! If people don't need to work to eat/pay rent employers will have to pay a decent wave to get workers and people will only work jobs that treat them as a human being or they will start their own business doing something that they find creative and fulfilling. Look at Sweden for an example.
