New motor mounts, new winches, and new haircut too, time to drill some holes in the boat. Our International man of mystery & boating adventures. Holmes. Sam Holmes. Welcome back. Boat projects to complete before the new season gets underway. Your motor needs those new mounts. Less vibration for the driveshaft/ coupler to your propeller. The mounting plates for those new winches- too many holes. Replace them too when you can. New electronics to sort out- new comfort in the cockpit for the journey ahead. This season should be fun. Always entertaining. Thanks for bringing us along with you Sam.

I just wipe it off with some Clorox all purpose cleaner or something similar.
@mukkaarКүн бұрын
@@SOLDOZER It's fine for cleaning, but vinegar is good for killing bacteria. Though I would probably first clean the boat in this situation, then use some type of disinfectant afterwards. I would dilute isopropyl alcohol in spray bottle to about 70%, then add couple drops of normal dish soap like fairy/dawn. Especially in case like this I think this step would be really important. Vinegar is ok, but not nearly as good.

Hey Sam, something I recently learned about mold. I feed sugar water to hummingbirds. After many years the feeders all started growing mold like crazy. I'd wash them out with Clorox bleach 1:3 water, and it would quickly grow back. Then I left the Clorox mix in them for a few hours. Solved the problem. No scrubbing necessary. They're now like they were before the big mold problem. The top edges where the soak doesn't reach may still have a bit of an issue. One day I'll fill a bucket and put something to hold everything under. On your boat.... maybe just keep bleach wiping down the worst areas to keep the bleach working over a few hours. The cushions will fade or the fabric will become brittle, but ... I've also been experimenting with Chlorine Dioxide. This is basically WWI poison gas. Drop tablets into a bucket of water with an aquarium aerator bubbling and then some fans to move the gas around. Leave it for several hours or over night. It's heavier than air so it wants to settle in the bilges, so point the fans up. It breaks down into completely inert salt, and because it's a gas there's no residue. I can't find any residue. I put one of my boat throw pillows next to it, smells fresher and no fading or bleach spots (unlike the clothes I was wearing when I scrubbed out my bird feeders.) Hotels, car rental/used car sellers, and real estate people use it a lot, someone smokes in a non-smoking room, someone dies and isn't found for a week.... (my friend's apartment manager just told me about that one.) It kills anything organic mold, mildew, bed bugs! Get the correct mask. 3M 6002, and several others are good. (I bought a cheap full face mask but the filters don't fit very well. I have a half mask but just dropping the tablets and leaving I could feel it in my eyes. ) I haven't tried it on my boat yet, but I've done my garage twice and can't find any negatives. I want to do more tests to see if it fades anything.You don't want it to splash onto anything. So in bucket, with a tray underneath. & No dehumidifier? That seems to solve most moisture problems. I leave mine on the galley sink, leave that thru hull open a bit. I've got plastic bins for my clothes on board. I made silnylon drybags that go around each bin, so open it up, everything is easy to find, no digging around. (the bins are frosted plastic, the bags are white.) Crossing the Pacific we had several days of fog and everything got wet and my clothes got mildew even in the middle of a dense pile inside a tight locker. (I felt really stupid because I had extra dry bags I didn't think to use. Arriving in Canada, I just wanted to find a laundry.) Cheers.

@vidguy0078 ай бұрын
I’m learning about mold also. Bought a fairly new house in the Pacific Northwest, found a spot of most likely black mold under a piece of removed drywall. Thought I had a problem until talking to a business that deals with removing mold. Basically wear the proper mask, use the proper filter on a shop vac, and remove it, all of it, with a wire brush Treat the surface Since there’s no evidence of a leak and it’s in the center of a panel, how did it get there? Most likely the wood panel was wet when installed An issue that would cause people to panic was easily resolved by talking to the right people. It’s fairly common
@WillN2Go18 ай бұрын
@@vidguy007Maybe maybe not installed wet. Water will condense on a cooler surface so if the room on the other side is cooler or it is the exterior. Center of a panel suggests to me condensation out of the air. One of the biggest problems with some earlier super insulation attempts was leaving space inside the vapor barrier. Because the vapor barrier was up against the outside wall, it was cooler most of the year. Any amount of air has moisture in it and even if it almost impossible for air movement, it would still get wet and grow mold. The more modern methods are to make it all airtight, create a gradient of insulation so the temperature gradually changes through the insulation. Matt Risinger on KZbin has a lot of good videos on this topic. (Be careful, he seems never to say anything negative about a new product. But he is knowledgeable and if I was insulating he'd be a key source of info.) (btw I'm in Los Angeles which is desert but my humidity is 40% today and usually about that year round. That's more than high enough for condensation.) I used to know two ways of dealing with mold. 1. Get most of it off, and make sure the material stayed dry. This was for archival art on paper. The idea was mold is never really gone, attack it and spores will always remain but they won't flare up so long as the thing is kept bone dry. 2. Clean it, attack it as best you can, and then paint the surface trapping it. But the 3rd was is to saturate it with high concentrations of bleach for a period of time. This of course would not work on a photograph -- it would break down the paper. (in most cases it doesn't affect the silver image. I'm an old darkroom photographer.) This is what worked on my hummingbird feeders and last week end on my bathtub and tile. I just cleaned my shower tile and tub. Guy living alone...calcium build up.... a lot of black mold along the caulking.. Found a video suggesting using toilet bowl cleaner, which is a viscous form of bleach -- it stays on the surface longer. Worked really well. So that might be another option. And of course chlorine dioxide, but ask those mold experts I'm sure they know more than I do. And do get the proper mask (pay the premium for the full face 3M mask and the right cartridges. The emphysema you never get will be your reward.

Hey Sam, not sure if you realised, but the winch needs to be aligned so the output gear (the gear that engages the ring gear on the inside of the drum) is at 90 deg to the 'lead' of the genoa sheet. So your port side winch looks like it needs rotating about 90 deg on its mounting in a counter clockwise direction. Also, dont forget to grease the winch gears and the S/S roller bearings if not already done. but DO NOT grease the springs & pawls, they need just need a drop of light oil. Grease will make them stick and stop the winch ratcheting.

Great to see you back on the ‘Pickled Herring’, with new winches and some other Bits’n bobs. It’s amazing how that mould builds up, but easily cleaned up it seems. Aren’t there ‘products’ that you can apply to keep the mould at bay? I hope the engine mounts are a simple ‘install’ ? Access into the smaller spaces on boats worries me a bit, but I’m sure you’ll have them in, in double quick time. Good luck with those jobs and I hope too, that your skiing trip goes well for you? You don’t want a broken keg or arm to hinder your sailing , so no heroics on the slopes ha ha! Thank you Dam.
