What a joy to see your very own garden! 🤩 I always wonder why other garden channels don't show their own. Maybe its that they are so busy they dont have time, because they are out at others' yard instead. So what a treat! I love your special space for you and your family. I love that you name the plants as you go in this video and others. I always wonder what you might have in the UK that I don't here in Western Washington State (VERY similar weather.) Thank you, another super lovely comment 😊 I did this video, because I thought it was a good way to show people a little bit about me and my garden. I've had quite a few over the years, some really real big, and others (like this one) quite small. But this is the first family garden 😍 it's nice to try to create something for the kids and wildlife at the same time. It's in full bloom at them moment. And I've added some veg beds for the kids to grow food in. As always with gardens thought, it's a work in progress 😂 Thanks again Stacey Martin.

Your back fence is in contact with the ground, it will rot. You really need to be raising the panels up on a concrete gravel board. Just a tip to avoid costly regular panel replacements.
@martinthegardenguy
@martinthegardenguy 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, and it's a great tip. My old house had concrete plinth and posts. It's was really easy. This fence isn't mine and actually belongs to the neighbor. I've worked around the base of the fence in most places to move the soil. But it keeps slipping back. I'll probably install a sacrificial timber section on the bottom of the fence to keep the soil away from the fence panels. The problem must have first started when the contractors installed the fence and piled up all the earth from the post holes on what is now my garden. Thus making our garden higher than their garden. I'll put it on the "to do" list 😂

Yeah, I agree. But I generally try to recycle and reuse and re purposes things. I've got some scrap timber that'll work, but I don't have any lawn edging strips. But that's the only reason I'll use wood. To be honest, I'm still a bit miffed that the fence contractors threw all the soil on my side, which is why the levels are off. Remember the elder tree I took down on another video? It was because it was pushing over this fence. It was still a tough choice, though....tree or fence. 😁

Great to see your garden! Will you espalier the new apple & plum trees? Do you get full sun except for the shade of the house?

Hi, I did consider training the fruit trees. But I'll just grow them as standard trees now. It gets some sun during summer, but not enough, really. The trees will have to get as tall as the pear tree first. My old garden was south facing, it would have worked far better there 😁 Thanks Martin

I really appreciate you giving a good close up and naming of the weeds in your garden. I find it interesting that they're pretty much exactly what I battle on a daily basis here in the great Pacific Northwest of the good ole USA. One more thing I get to blames on you Brits. Lol :P I grew up calling Herb Robert Stinky Bob. I must admit Herb Robert is a bit classier. I'll use a French accent and blame it on them. I kind of like it but I pull every one I find. Right now is Hairy Bittercress season. Do you have it in the UK? It's a nuisance and if left to seed will damn near put your eye out. Much like the Oxalis. We call it shot weed for that reason. Praise be Spring. P.S. Good catch on the baby Hellebores.

Haha, that's OK. I'll take the blame on behalf of my countrymen 😂 I actually like Stinky Bob as a name more than herb Robert. It's more fun 😁 Yes, indeed, we have hairy bittercress in the UK. By the bucket load 😅 when I'm weeding that and stinky Bob at the same time.....good times 😂 I may start using eye protection. Anyway, thank you very much for the awesome comment. Much appreciated Martin.

Oh dear 😂 never mind. It's easily done. I bet one thing, you'll never do it again 😁👍 gardening is all about learning. Next time, look closely when weeding as these plants have very distinctive leaf patterns, very unlike any weeds. Even when they are tiny. Fingers crossed some more will germinate 🤞 Thank you, and all the best. Martin.

@@martinthegardenguy hi thanks for answering me, it’s absolutely huge at the moment and I’m not sure where to start, I’ve cut back some of it but it’s got leaves on it now, have I left it too late or will it survive? Thanks Jackie
@martinthegardenguy

Firstly, Jackie, don't worry 😉 there's virtually nothing you can do (pruning wise) to a rose that will kill it. They are very, very tough. I'm not sure what kind you have, but generally speaking, it's still OK to prune. If you want to reduce its height, then just prune lower down. But always to a bud (or node) if you can. Remove any stems that look dead or diseased or very weak. And that's about it 😁👍 When I had roses, I used to take them down to about a foot and a half from the ground. Although, I don't follow standard gardening conversations. This easy method has always worked well for me. With hydrangeas, clip off any dead flowers from last year. This'll tidy the plant up a bit. Then, prune (not unlike the rose really) down to the size you want. Most people say to do this later in the year. As frost can damage newly pruned stems and cause them to blacken. And that's it. 👍 Two tips, sharp seceteurs. And always prune above a bud. Hope this helps. Martin.

How do you trim mature or large ajuga? Mine started growing up and over a variegated wiegela.
@martinthegardenguy
@martinthegardenguy 9 ай бұрын
Honestly, I never trim mine (as such). When it gets too vigorous, I generally just rip it out and try to leave little clumps of it like islands in the borders. I find it comes out easy enough most of the time. But where ground cover plants are concerned, you have to take the rough with the smooth 😂 Best of luck Martin.

People have remarked in the coments for the shrub, mock orange... In French fleur d'oranger du mexique.. It has fragrant white flowers.. Mine are still pretty small, so it's not's worth it to cut them back.. But, I have seen huge shrubs elsewhere that are of impressive height and width. The weed Hern Robert, is one I can tolerate, because the leaves are so pretty and change to a bright red, and the flowers are pretty.. Not as terrible as that creeping buttercup and those garden daisies/paquerettes!

Dig up your delphinium, and use a sharp knife to split it into its separate crown buds (the little baby plant-lets forming around the dead old remains of last years central parent plant). It is the perfect time of the year and little to no roots are needed. Plant the babies. You should get about 7 new plants this way. I did mine a month ago, and each plant is now a foot tall and has already put out about 5 new crown bud plant-lets each around their bases, so I am going to be cheeky and do the same process again in a few weeks time. From 5 top of the range varieties of just one parent plant from the garden centers bargain basement reduced price old stock I estimate I will have at least 50 mature specimens within the next month, all healthier and bigger than the original 5 I started with. The yellow leaved plant was choisya ternata, probably 'sundance'. Mine got too big all the time, so I hacked it back to nothingness regularly and it always flushed back vigorously the same year. White fragrant flowers, which the bees love.

Oh God - I cannot move on my patio from all the divisions I have made of every perennial you can think of. I dug up one small clump of helenium and got over 100 separate plants. I think I could start supplying plants to the Dutch international plant shippers at this rate, I'm definitely hoarding! And just so you know - I reckon nobody is offended if you don't reply to their posts. It's decent of you to show appreciation, but if you get more subscribers and reply to everybody you will get burnt out, so I never mind if you don't respond to any of my posts again if it means you have more time to do what you enjoy and make such excellent content. You sound like a fellow northerner so its good to have somebody fairly local, gardening in similar climate with similar plants at roughly the same stage as the stuff in my garden. I see many others feel the same as I do, so keep up the ace content where you have time and if you are busy, all us new subscribers can form a community sharing tips and ideas in the comments amongst ourselves. Cheers for making me feel welcome as a newbie though!@@martinthegardenguy
