@@AussieNaturalist 👍one of the first things you learn when playing comps mark your ball to identify it, at my club with the old boys group (50 yrs +) many of the guys actually state the ball and number in it prior to starting.

@ Spot on. I’m a retired Tour player, and I can tell you I never played a round without showing my playing partners the ball I was teeing off with on the first, my makings, etc, and each time I pulled out a new ball I told my maker the new number. So for those guys to hit the each other’s balls, it’s a huge mistake on their behalf, and every other player will give them a lot of shit for a long time for that stuff up 🤣

The rules allow you to take necessary steps to identify the golf ball and to miss that simple step as they were in the middle of the fairway is almost incomprehensible. I play lots of golf every year and wherever my ball may lie I look down to look for my identification marks. ALWAYS!!! It’s their own fault and they know it. A lesson learned.

This happened in the 2014 US Open at Pinehurst. Hunter Mahan and Jamie Donaldson played each other’s balls in the second round in the 18th hole (which was their 9th hole of the day.) Mahan eventually missed the cut because of the penalty. That same year it happened at two other USGA amateur events, the Women’s Am and the Senior Women’s Am. In my 32 years of officiating those are the only times I’ve been at an event where it happened. Lots of wrong balls, but not two players playing each other’s ball.

@@roberttoutaint199 I think it’s because a lot of golf pro’s don’t have to add up beyond 7 once they leave school 😁 someone said in the numbers he gave it was $413K An expensive mistake for them both but one of the first things you learn is to play your own ball and mark it so you know it’s yours

@guyr7351 I agree they should've been penalized for playing the wrong ball I have never done it because I mark my ball in three different places around the circumference, I have been doing this for the last 50 years. That way the typical 1/3 of the ball that is visible has my mark clearly displayed.

@ I do the same, I used to draw alignment lines on the ball which I never really used when putting. I now just write the letter G on them in several places similar to the PIX markings Taylor Made do. It works

I played the wrong ball on the 18 out of the rough! One of my playing partners said there’s your ball, amongst some other practice balls, and yes it was one of mine - Bit disappointed as I had thought it had gone further! 30yds further on was the correct ball! Two shot penalty! It was only a friendly but it cost me the back nine and overall! 😂

Punishment is right. It’s a major infraction to interfere with an opponent’s ball, which is essentially what they did to each other. How hard is it for both of them to ID their own ball. Rookie mistake, no excuse. Would you ask the same question if only 1 of them hit the wrong ball and the 2nd player went up to a ball and said, Hold on this isn’t mine… you hit my ball. Imagine the discontent that causes. Proper penalty.

😮Yeah long story bud....happened to me in the Ammy Major (Club Champs) in 2008 down here in South Africa. I played a #3 Prox1x ball which was marked in my own unique way. Flip side was that I lost the very same marked golf ball the previous week in a waterhazard at my home course. Unbeknown to me, one of my playing competitors must have picked up the ball and we happen to hit the same ball on the 11th fairway during the second round while both were in contention for the club championship. Both our tee shots went just of the fairway to the right and I got to the first ball and identified it by my own unique marking. I played the ball but after that I saw my real ball (newer version since I replaced it when we started the 10th hole) lying about 2 meters forward on my right at the time we were looking for my competitor's ball. Needless to say a bad incident ensued about whose ball it was. To prove my point, I pulled out all balls and showed him how I uniquely marked them in the same manner. I then had to play my original ball adding a two stroke penalty. After fetching the wrongly played ball and placing it back for my competitor next to the divot, he went on to hit it OB (obviously visibly upset after the incident). We both lost the championship by one stroke that day. Since that fateful day, I have never played a #3 ball again and always ensure that I play my ball which I had played from the T-box!🥴

As a junior golf I once got a two stroke penalty for accidentally dropping my ball on the green after marking it. The ball hit my foot and rolled towards the hole. It was determined that I was testing the surface. I’m pretty sure it was a parent watching our group that brought it to the tournament official’s attention. Anyway that felt harsh at the time and basically I got penalized for being clumsy, because there was absolutely none intention to test the surface. I remember trying to articulate that, but the official penalized me anyway. I was like 11 and my parents drove me 180 miles to play in the event. That one hurt…

It's easy to understand how they did it on that course. The ball rolls out so far on those downhill par 5's that you lose sight of the ball. If both balls came to rest with the markings underneath then they wouldn't have known until they got to the green. It would be interesting to know how close the balls were after the tee shots & why they might have assumed it was their ball & not the other player.

I'm a little bit tired of seeing these golf professionals over the years, getting away with things we amateurs could not, they seem to have special rules at times so it is good to see the same outcome I would have had. These guys plead ignorance over the simplest of rules, drives me nuts. It takes them four days to take a really obvious and simple drop by the time they've called a referee in.

Actually, this happened to me. Two (marked) bridgestone downhill tee balls in the fairway. Saw "bridgestone" and we played the wrong ball.

I seem to recall both players recorded a bogey on the hole not a double bogey as you have stated so the $$’s lost not as significant.

This is not unccommon in club play because some players have a variety of golf balls in their bag. Professionals aren't that poor.

Or do like me , don't under any circumstance use a Titleist ball like everyone else on the course. My Staff model ball is never mistaken. when looking for a ball and you ask what are you playing "Titleist" is the response but no Number or model is offered and then they discover a wrong ball on the green like these two who between them & their caddies should no better

There are some rules that are quite obscure and therefore you might feel hardly done by (maybe even so obscure that it would justify a KZbin video). This is not one of those rules. Everybody knows, or should know, the penalty for playing the wrong ball!

"What do you think? " I think you need to go back to school and relearn simple arithmetic since the losses in earnings due to the penalties are not "nearly a million dollars if you add them all up." If you did add up the differences you'd get $290,000 + $123,000 = $413,000. On top of this you put in the description that the players lost $100,000 rather than the $1,000,000 you speak about in the video. Secondly I have no sympathy for the two players. They know the rules - even a new amateur will check their ball before hitting hit it in addition they have professional caddies looking after them. I'm happy that the players who did not infringe the rules got just a little bit more money from their efforts.

Thats way too harsh. Its not like either of them did anything that was purposeful cheating, and if they accidentally traded balls (I’m assuming, but not a terribly important detail) their shots must have been similar enough not to matter which balls they played. And where were the caddies? The fans? NO ONE spoke up?! I’d probably have whispered “hey mate, let’s pretend that didn’t happen.” And go on with the day having dodged a bullet. It was probably worse than a 2 stroke penalty, since the bs penalty for an honest mistake probably got into their heads a bit, considering they were probably thinking eagle chance when they stepped up to the tee box. Patrick Reed? Yea he might do it on purpose. But these two? Come on.
