I've started dabbling with this about 20 years ago, initially by accident. The gap you have between the trunks would not be an issue were the tree(s) growing in ground, but in a proper sized pot the growth is stifled and will take *years* before it will look like a single trunk. For potted specimens, try to get the trunks totally flush, and scrape the bark off where each trunk connects to others. You'll find the progress much quicker. Cheers!

Broski!!! Its incredible that you accomplished the fusion without wire. Im loving the new aerial roots. I honestly cant believe it recovered after that savage root butchering 🤔✂😎...another great video. Im totally copying your soil compound for all my repotting this Spring. Cheers my friend 😎🍺🍺

I used string when I first got it to bind the trunks together. It was maybe 6 months before it started cutting in so I removed it. Then it’s been slowly just growing into itself. And you should defo make a similar soil mix

Wow, the pruning at 9:07 transformed the top of the tree, I'm so impressed. Can't wait to start shaping my tiny Benjaminas, but I need to be patient as they really need to thicken up first! (Currently only as thick as pencil). Will totally be using this video for guidance in the future. Thanks for sharing Ian 😊

Cheers Kate. One of my favourite things in bonsai is when you do one little thing and it totally improves the tree massively, especially after ages with no real progress. Your little ficus will thicken up in no time. they are fast growers. :)

the bottom fused great. need some grafting tape. or id try to use some plastic wrap. no one here in the US sells ficus as house plants these days. its just the "ginseng" ones we ever see in stores.
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers. Yeah I was thinking about wrapping the middle but just kept putting it off. I might have to start looking at it again. Ficus are rare here too. Usually only ginseng as well. I couldn’t believe it when I seen these little fellas :)

Way to go Sid Pavey! Sweet project. I always wonder with these fusions if it’s worth just letting everything grow untouched for a year, maybe two, to get those trunks thickened up and fused faster?
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers. Yeah 100% let them grow as much as possible. The more growth the faster the fusion. I have this epic idea for a fusion. involving 3D printing. I need more space though and a 3D printer. And a nerd to make it for me. Lol

Are you sure it's a benjamina? It looks like a retusa to me.

It's definitely a benjamina, that extra pointy leaf tip is clearly giving it away.

@@husch05 Yeah you're right. The leaves are bigger than mine and are the size of my retusas.
