Interesting video. Backing up is a skill that some people never seem to master. Years ago I lived on a narrow dead end street in Portland, OR not far from I-5. A guy with tandem trailers accidentally turned down my street. Not sure why he got off I-5. He had one heck of a time turning his trailers around. It became a neighborhood event. We had to move cars and help guide the driver. The man was very embarrassed but in the end we were all friends. We all brought out snacks and beverages and had a block party in his honor. And we promised never to tell his company. The man drove off stuffed and laughing. I wonder whatever happened to trucker George?

I once had a guy pop out his truck at midnight to tell me my clearance while parking at a truck stop in Fairburn GA. I was following his instructions to keep going when I hear the sound of metal collide. Good thing I was going real slow, I winded up hitting the chrome cover of a drivers side smoke stack. Driver I hit was about to call the police when I persuaded him with $200.00 dollars to let it go. Lesson learned, DON'T TRUST ANYONE WHEN BACKING UP AT A TRUCK STOP, ALWAYS GET OFF AND LOOK!!!

In the early 70's I worked for my father's trucking Co backing trailers on to Railroad flat cars in the Santa Fe RR yards in Barstow Ca. . Loading these trailers you had to split 12" (6" each side) and to make it harder you could have up to six 90' long flatcars coupled together and you had to load the farthest flatcar first. When you load 20 - 30 trailers a day it doesn't take long to get real good at. By the time I was eighteen taking the CDL backing tests wasn't even hard. Those skills I learned back then I still use today 45 years later in fact I like the challenge when it arises.

Thanks for the upload... The "watching my left rear wheel".... Making sure it's lined up with the yellow line is the best trick I've picked up so far watching tube vids. And it will only be a 5 ton that I will be driving on Monday. I do have a bit of experience driving one, but it was always by myself using common sense. Also was always embarrassed getting out of my truck 2 or 3 times to look and see what was going on when I was not sure. Specially when the Boys were watching me. HOLY PULSE INCREASE 10 FOLDS I TELL YOU LOL! Could literally feel it in my throat 😅. If anyone reading this has any more hints or tricks for me, it would be immensely appreciated! Any links to other videos welcomed as well. Just about the backing up. The rest I am perfectly fine. Merci buckets.

Speaking from experience, DO NOT WORK FOR CRST, unless you don't mind getting paid on average of $350 a week working past your 70 hour clock well into recap hours. Living on a shitty, beat up truck with someone you dont know, for AT LEAST 1 month before you get home time, and you only get 4 days max of home time after you work at least 30 days straight.. You have to pay for all tolls out of your own pocket(and pray that you get reimbursed for that expense, also you have to pay for all weight scales, and again hope you get your money back). CRST WILL short you at least 75 miles per run(but my experience was seeing 150 or more shorted miles EACH load). You constantly have to call your DM each pay period and chase down money you are owed, and expect to not get paid for loads all together. You will not get paid detention pay if you are at a shipper or receiver for several hours(I've been at many shippers and receivers for 10, 12, 14+ hours and got nothing for pay). You dont get paid for breakdown pay until 48 hours after you are broken down(and many times you dont even get that). Expect to get a truck to is severely beaten up on the inside and out, and the trucks are absolutely nasty inside with hard, old and dirty mattresses. If you are put into a motel, it will be the cheapest motel in the area you are in, and you WILL have to share your room with other CRST drivers. CRST provides no comforts inside the trucks, and you are expected to buy everything as far as all the office supplies you are required to have, you have to buy all the cleaning supplies, your own GPS(if you want one) your own atlas, tire gauge, tools safety gear etc(all of which you will NOT get reimbursed for) You are expected to buy your own load locks, and locks for your tractor and trailer. I could keep going on, but I'm getting pissed the more I write. And again, this is all from experience, very recent too, as I just resigned from CRST 1 week ago. I'm with a new trucking company now, and I'm truly disgusted with how shitty CRST is compared to my new employer. Do yourself a solid, stay far away from CRST

I like all the positive comments. I am to old to drive one of those trucks. I have to drive an old 2000 kenworth W900L with the little 600 cat with an 18 speed transmission. I wouldn't trade it for any of those new trucks. Of course I can't remember the last time I got out and looked. I just back up. Don't remember the last time I got a ticket or even a write up at a scale. Remember to just have fun out there. Backing up is easy.

At the moment, I don't drive for hire anymore but I speak for experience, He said it righ: it never hurts to get out and look first., also one thing I always kept in sight was the bottom part of the long side of the trailer which actually is the deck of the inside of the trailer and always keep it as your point of reference to be lined up with any marker you are trying to line up against. One more thing that made it easy for me was to always keep the trailer's doors closed so you can always have a clean view of the end of your vehicle, once you are lined up and close enough to your stopping point go ahead and open them up.

Hey rookies don't take advice from someone who doesn't know the difference between blindside backing and sight side backing.
@Rock-Bottem1982
@Rock-Bottem1982 5 жыл бұрын
Clearly you didn't recognize the fact that instead of pulling into that lot by taking a right(which would have been a blind side backing for this situation) the driver took a left into the lot across the way, then proceeded to do a straight line back so he could then set himself up for a site side backing. So hey everyone, don't take advise from Pathfinder Bishop, he doesn't understand anything

Personally, I'd have left the trailer doors closed until the last moment as the doors clipped back just obstruct the view of the back corner of the trailer. Also ... I haven't seen a driver open his driver's door to look back since watching my dad reverse an old Bedford about 50 years ago. Modern mirrors have made that the practice of dinosaurs.

@brancomctab1248
@brancomctab1248 5 жыл бұрын
Elvin Ortez 1. Avoid oversteering. Just a very very slight swing to center your truck and trailer in your lane. 2. Since you are not seated at the center of your truck, picture your body moving on the road not at the center of your lane but slightly to the left of it. How much your body is offset is determined by the width of the lane you are on. As you travel on a straight highway where you don’t feel so nervous, use that time to practice and learn how much you need to offset your body based on the width of the lane you are on. Use the two flat mirrors to confirm you are centered. Keep practicing that until your body becomes part of the truck and you know without the need to check those mirrors that you are centered on your lane. 3. When driving through the curves, cling very close to the outmost edge of your lane and do not forget to check your tandem wheels on your innermost side using your mirrors. Those tandem wheels need to be inside your lane. In all curves being centered is not important then. You just have to be inside your lane. Moving at the correct speed and pulling your trailer are paramount in curves. 3. Don’t forget that you still need to constantly check your mirrors for hazards as advised in all CDL schools. Thanks and I hope that helps. Good luck and be safe out there.
