Hope you enjoy what I consider to be the backpacking trip of a lifetime. Gorgeous views, mountain passes, hammock camping and adventure was the name of the game when we went on one of the best and most popular hikes in Colorado. The Four Pass Loop in the Maroon Bells was truly epic. We take on West Maroon, Frigid Air, Trail Rider and Buckskin passes (in that order) clockwise around the loop. This was my first trip out West and definitely won't be the last. Maximum elevation was around 12,500 feet.
Watch as we slog through the altitude, get caught at the top of a pass during a thunderstorm, stay at some beautiful campsites, trek through the snow and only have one itsy bitsy tumble.

Absolutely enjoyed the joy and enthusiasm for your hike! Me and a good friend are making plans for this late June 2020 to complete the loop, been having some troubles with the complications of accessability due to covid-19 and avalanche events that have altered the landscape this winter. But we are determined to make the best of it, 2020 style! Your video was an upbeat reinstallation of hope for why people do these extreme trips, the wild beauty is beyond worth it! Can't wait. Thank you again!

Wow fantastic trip!! 52 instances of the words beautiful and pretty in this video LOL. However justifiable number for describing it. I've been looking forward to this! What an epic trip. Such a beautiful area. I'll have to put this on my list. The situation trying to beat the storm over the pass is almost identical to what I just experienced this past weekend in the Sierras. I get it about the altitude! Love this video. I tried to do this about 3 years ago. A flatlander myself. We overnighted just above that creek that had the snow bridge above Crater Lake. No snow at that area...around July 7 or so. I made it to the top of Maroon Pass after a slow slog of nearly 3 hours. that was about 2 miles below the pass. I realized there was no way I was going to make it all through the loop. Dropped back down to the first nights camp and got set up just in time to get shelter from a hailstorm. Back out the next morning. Just a stunning spot.

Epic Trip! I like the part with the girls trail names!! I know what you mean about the elevation for breathing. Last year in the mountains it was a challenge adjusting the the high elevations. The storms can make you a little nervous!! Next year our plan in to go backpacking at the Rocky Mountain National Park and maybe climb Longs Peak. That is a very challenging climb and the weather will be a major factor.

Awesome video. I hiked that same loop last June. The exact same thing happened to our group when we were descending from west Maroon pass. We decided to set up our tents and hammocks in that very small group of trees at the bottom of the pass. Ended up getting absolutely hammered by the storm and couldn't see 2 feet outside of our shelters until it got dark. It would have been very dangerous if we decided to ascend frigid air pass

It would be very helpful to know if this was June or July because of snow levels. but your video is great! thanks. I've done this trail 3 times, one of them alone, and now hope for one more time.

That someone would shoot an arrow in a designated campsite is moronic beyond belief. As a native Coloradoan, I'm embarrassed. Awesome video and you guys did a great job, especially crossing that snow trail!

Beautiful scenery, and oh so many Yahoos, but this is a Tim Watson video after all! LOL I half expected, and was surprised that you did not come upon a group of old ladies having tea out there, as we saw just about everyone else! That arrow was a Native American warning to all yahoos and gawkers to keep out! I would have collected some of that Mountain Goat hair and woven a coat while I was out there! If you scratch the goats gently under their chin, they will sit still and let you shear them, but only if you do it gently! Did you edit out the part where sick, lame and lazy Josh was chased down the mountain by a bear? Hey, I saw that van a few years ago when I was out in the Guadeloupe Mountains! All in all, looked like a good time. Good video!

thanks for sharing your trip videos and the knowledge about backpaking, i was really into wildlife and now im really into backpacking , me and my wife just bought all the gears and going to yosemite for 3 day backpacking in august to see the mother nature from very close the first time , one Q how many of that gas fluid tank do we need for two nights?
@TimWatsonOutdoors
@TimWatsonOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Depends on how much you use it of course BUT in general just boiling water for two people for two nights a 110g canister will work easily.

Best Video of the Four Loop Pass I have watched yet! My wife, Bother, and I are planning on doing this trip the first week in July, I hope it nice out! 1 Question though, did you feel like you needed to use GPS or a map? Or was the path pretty easy to follow? Thanks in advance!
@TimWatsonOutdoors
@TimWatsonOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex! The path was generally easy to follow BUT we used the GPS for the snow covered areas quite a bit. If you have snow all bets are off and I'd recommend bringing the GPS.

Hi Tim. I apologize if this question was asked previously but I didn’t see it. I’m taking my 16 year old out to CO to do this hike later this summer. We are really trying to decide whether to take our hammocks (Warbonnet Blackbirds) or our tents (ZPacks). We both prefer hammocks, but we don’t want to be too constrained in campsite choices. I’ve found very few pictures and trip reports of people using hammocks. I’m very interested in your opinion (and other subscribers opinions)
@TimWatsonOutdoors
@TimWatsonOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
The hammocks will definitely constrain your choices but I didn't think it was too bad. I didn't have any anxiety that we weren't going to find trees or a good spot to setup every night. If you sleep better in the warbonnet blackbirds then I'd bring that one!

Thanks and yes I wore the speedcross 3s. My feet would have been even more pruned in any boots. The whole trip was wet and that one mud pit would have been over any boots.
