Great idea, thanks! One comment, using an example: at 3:00+... You talk about its "fabric", but you don't mention which is it actually, although it's a very important information (cotton vs polyester or whatnot regarding breathability, the dangers of sweat accumulation into the fabric during cold weather, etc.). Personally, and it should be of importance for any hiker (noob or seasoned is not a criterion since it concerns basic health), that kind of information is an imperative. Note that I'm not watching KZbin reviewers just to get marketing pitches, those companies can do this by themselves, and very effectively ;-)

Totally agree about Altra. Lone Peaks stretched out so bad after a river crossing that I couldn't get the laces tight enough to keep my feet from sliding around and causing blisters. Tried another pair the following year and let's just say I now have two expensive pairs of mowing shoes.

I'm done with Dr. Bronner's soap. I made the switch to Summit Suds powdered soap because it doesn't freeze and I don't have to worry about it leaking in my pack. It also doesn't make my skin feel tacky after washing with it.

i have been using the Topo Terraventure's for a couple of years now, they are less expensive than Altra's and last a lot longer than Altra's. Definitely a great brand to chose.

I think it's interesting that I can look up the Topo lineup on the REI site, and all but one of the 13 options are priced $125-$150. Mostly the same with Altra, which has a few more above $150 but twice as many offerings to start. Some are for road and some for trail, but it always seems like a LOT of offerings for essentially the same price point. You'd think they could make 2-3 road and 2-3 trail and call it a day. :)

Agreed on the Topo superiority to the Altra! Our family just finished hiking the Arizona Trail (thanks to your documentary for the idea), and we tried several different brands before and during from Hoka to Altra to Topo. My son, myself, and two of our daughters ended up with the Topo, and my husband is switching over now as well. He also really liked the La Sportiva, but overall, Topo has been our favorite! Bonus, my orthopedist asked me to bring in my shoes to medically clear me for the hike (I have tendinopathy), and he loved the Topo, recommended I stop using Altra.

Ive been using a Sawyer Squeeze since 2018 but i recently switcthed to the Platypus Quickdraw. Two main reasons - has a good light cap at both ends so i can keep it in my sleeping bag without a plastic baggy. Second, it's easier to clean in the field. You don't need an adaptor or anything. The clean end has sort of a rubbery spout so you just push your clean water bottle against it and squeeze and watch all the brown water come out the dirty end. more efficient, less stuff to keep track of. Basically same flow rate when new as the sawyer and easier to keep unclogged.

I guess I have been lucky with my Nitecore batteries. I have several and have not had any problems except for the one I dropped hard on a rock. It quit working completely, but I cannot blame the battery for that. I LOVE my new ESC Mirage Sun Hoodie! I was very surprised and pleased with how comfortable it feels. Love the hood too. I will likely order a second one. For me, one of the most important things about shoes is fit. The Top Athletic Ultraventure Pros fit me better than anything else I have tried - especially the Altras. If I can find a store that stocks the Pursuit, I will try them on for fit. Thanks for the Video, Darwin.

I have both a Nitecore NB10000 (version 2, used for shorter hikes) and a Nitecore NB20000 (used for longer hikes) and both have been working flawlessly for me. My one grip is that they both have only one USB-C port that can actually output power, so I have to charge one device after the other (I don't carry USB type A cables). Not that big of a deal but meh. The NB20000 paired with a charger that can deliver 30 W is very fast to recharge, 80% in 2 h 30 and 100% in 4 hours. It is essentially as fast to recharge as the NB10000, which is a really a plus when doing a quick resupply run in town.

For the past 8-9 years I've been a hardcore hammocker. Early this year I bough a canvas cutter summit bedroll and I absolutely love it. Comfortwise its hard to beat a hammock but when rolling into camp late at night sometimes it can be a pain to get a perfect hang. With the summit bedroll, I roll it out inflate my mattress and I'm good. Setup is so easy that I'll take the slight hit in comfort for easy of setup.

I was curious so looked them up. It is still a bivy sack, and heavy compared to a single wall tent that has more ventilation and more room. Hammock to bivy sack seems like one extreme to the other. Why not try a Tarptent ProTrail model at 1.2 pounds? I've put close to 2,000 miles on one, it sets up in 2 minutes, add a Western Mountaineering bag, a Nemo pad, and you're good to 20f degrees at 3 pounds total.

Lots of durability issues and quirks with the Nitecore banks including the bank becoming dead with inadvertent long button pushes(something pushing on it in your pack). Can’t be brought back until you charge it again, which on trail would be a major bummer.
@WitcherOnTrail Жыл бұрын
It's a lightweight battery - not meant to be abused. The issue you've described sounds like it discharged completely because you packed it poorly - having something packed and pressed into the button and jostled by hiking - yeah, that could break it or cause a discharge. The indicator lights on the battery are quite bright, and could use up the battery charge if constantly pressed to keep indicator lights lit. But that's not due to a defect in the product. The button is not very prominent - so not sure how you managed this.

@@DarwinOnthetrail Altra seems dead set on moving to the "ego" foam midsole despite having had something better. But yeah, Altras pancake way too soon.
@jopeters Жыл бұрын
Did you notice a weird feeling in the midfoot when you first start wearing the Pursuit? Earlier this year I bought the Pursuit and Terraventures to compare, and ended up returning the Pursuit because it felt like there was a ridged "rocking" that occured when I transferred weight from my midfoot to my toes.
@MichaelProsalik Жыл бұрын
@@jopeters I cannot say that I did. My biggest worry was the heal cup, but it gripped better than I thought ( I have a medium arch, regular heal, and EEE forefoot). For me, it was an apprehensive switch, but I was impressed with how "plush" the footbed felt for what it is. Especially after several hundred miles. For me, the durability was a big factor too; it made it through a couple bushwacks with off-camber walking that another thru-hiker's ALtras started to shred on after 60-80 miles. I'm sold, I just bought 2 more pairs in fear it will change too much (like Altra's have...).
@jopeters Жыл бұрын
@@MichaelProsalik Gotcha. I honestly have no idea if my heel is considered wise or not...but I loved the wider heel of the LPs. The Terraventures seem just a tad too narrow for my heel cause if I hike hard I can tell I start to develop edge blisters on my outer heel. I never had that issue in LPs, but I DID get weird blisters on the BACK of my heel from (I assume) the super soft heel foam making my heel strikes worse on long strides. I might have to give the Pursuits another go when I can say I got enough use out of my Terraventures...I'm assuming the heel cup is the same but maybe the zero drop would help somehow.

I actually dug out of the trash my old Nalgene lighter weight bottle for summer use too. While twice the weight of a smart bottle, I find it is super easy to mix nutrition bumps such as electrolytes, powders such as trailwind recovery, or ultra fuel, Huel, or Kachava meal replacements. You can get an after market bottle top for nalgene or the non splash plug. Great way to store that extra liter of water and can pour into my standard smart water bottle easy that has a DYI hydration hose attached. No bladders, no small bottle tops to deal with. Also got rid of the titanium pots for the Vargo BOT large. The sealed lid makes it another liter of water for long dry section hauls plus it can either be a stove pot or a cold soak sealed container. Got rid of the sawyer too. While excellent I find the weight of a wet sawyer and the weight of a wet grayl ultra filter to be about the same. I find the grayl quicker and more pleasant to use as I don’t have to fill a squeeze bag to use with sawyer. I can quickly push and fill any water containers quicker with the grayl. Far mor expensive but I find I have not used my sawyer or Quick draw since have it a grayl ultra for a year. It is my go to for traveling too.

You’re going to love the Pursuits dude! I have a little over 400 miles on mine with no sign of them wearing out anytime soon. I got fed up with trying to make Lone Peaks work for me. P.I. here currently SOBO CDT. I've also exclusively only used Lone peaks for hiking and backpacking since the 2.0s. I started this hike with LonePeak 6s. They had about 100miles already when I started. I'm not joking when I say I got another 1,100 miles out of them before switching out to a new pair. I switched only because I pretty much wore through all the grippy tread and was slipping to easily on gravel. Other than the slipping problems I had no other issues for needing a new pair. The insole didn't even have an holes worn in. None of the shoe itself had holes. As far as padding goes and cushion I will say I'm not the best judge as I don't need much at all. As the shoe wears down I don't really notice lack of cushion so I could see how that would be a much earlier problem for most people. If cushion is what you need I would just advise against Lone Peaks. If you just want good but minimal foot coverage that will last then definitely the Lonepeaks hold well for a trail runner.

Luckily, and very reluctantly, I instinctively brought a no brand at the airport and that saved me.

Altra Lone Peak, as a trail runner I tried them for two weeks and returned them to REI. The sole was too mushy and soft, plus the toe box was so square and wide that the outside edge caught on everything. Kept using Brooks Cascadia 2EE wide, half size larger than usual. Durable, traction, firm feel, 8mm drop, add Birkenstock cork inserts for perfection.

I made that exact shoe change this year. I LOVE the pursuits! So far they have not worn any holes where my altras were getting them within a hundred miles. I have also beat the shit out of them in places where boots would be a more appropriate choice. The only thing I’ve had happen is the inside ankle cuffs got worn through a bit from me rubbing the shoes against each other while hiking. I also really like the arch support in them. It’s a bit more than any of my altras have.

By the way, I’ve put a couple hundred miles on them now.

The Polartec Alpha Direct material clothes: Do they smell after you use them, as they're synthetic? So not good for multi-day use?

I would love to see you try out a Scarpa shoe for long distance hikes.

wearing Scarpa Terra GTXs now, I love them for regular walking, but have yet to love them for hiking with a lot of steep trail, got blisters on both of my big toes. I may need to vary my sock game or adjust the tightness, but they are not as precise a fit for me as my Solomon Triple Crowns. I got them for the full grain leather as I was tired of the uppers on my lightweight hikers wearing/blowing out before the soles, but the jury is still out.
