Hi Paul, I know you're obsessed with low weight and that's an admirable pursuit, but, if you're swapping out a multi functional SAK for a single function Opinel, you're taking it a bit far. What if you need tweezers or a toothpick ? A screwdriver for your tripod ? Even a can opener ? It's a false economy....

Hello Paul from NZ. I like your choice of pack, I have the same I am in the mountains over 40 times a year from one day tramps to 5 day tramps (we call it tramping not hiking). The pack is very light and easy on the back. I carry up to and over 15kg depending on how many days I'm in the mountains. I think that your videos are one of the best no nonsense on KZbin . I have had over 50 years in the mountains 9 Years as a guide and I'm still out there doing it. So I know that you know what you are talking about. Well done. Keep the videos coming. 😀

Its just the price with those dehydrated meals that puts me off. I'd want a takeaway level meal for that price lol. I'd rather take a pasta-n-sauce packet for 50p but each to their own
@zeshanhm
@zeshanhm 3 жыл бұрын
You can make your own, that’s what I do. Dehydrated food from the bulk section at grocery store, store a breakfast, lunch and dinner in a gallon bag. If you want to be extra light you can use the food bag from those backpacking meals, the bag is very strong can handle boiling water, cleans out easily.
@Yer_Da_
@Yer_Da_ 3 жыл бұрын
@@zeshanhm Dehydrated isn't the same as freeze dried - those Summit to Eat meals are freeze dried which is expensive to make, they're more nutritous than dehyrdrated meals hence why they're popular with back packers.

Great video. There’s such a lot of gear out there it’s hard to know which is best. I did a five day hike in summer and didn’t bother with a sleeping bag. I just wore my down jacket and put my feet in the rucksack. Sometimes it’s good to see how little gear you actually need and sometimes it’s good to splash out on a few luxuries. Good luck on your trip.

I was a bit like this when I packed for my 5 weeks Canadian trip (Sept-Oct). 30 liters rucksack, under 10 kg weight, same tent (broke/repaired in 2 weeks), down sleeping bag (-7C). I took hiking boots and wellies and when, just before the flight posted hiking boots back to home. I think hiking boots better for Canada, wellies - for Scotland (hiked cuillin ridge in wellies). If you hike in the boots good thing to take - newspaper. For lightweight food: ground porridge and buckwheat

This is great but my pack also has to include water (no water fresh, or otherwise where I go). Minimum 2 litres per day in the warmer region so for 3 days that works out to 6-7 litres = additional 7 kgs

Unless you go hike in a very dry place, why carry all that water? There are ultra light and rather cheap water filter options out there, like the Katadyn BeFree.

well done, great editing. 8kg is a good weight for 3 days. My kit is twice that at 16kg however I carry more heavy duty items such as stainless steel water bottle, pot, cup and burner. Big knife, folding saw, multitool, small knife. Small fishing kit with slingshot. Heavy snow goretex jacket. Canvas tarp/bivy/poncho and my pack is a 55L 5.11 tactical rush 72 @ 2.4kg empty. Mines more of a camping, bushcraft, fishing kit with an emphasis on being heavy duty for bushcraft/survival skills. 16kg includes 3 days of food and 2L/kg of water. Thanks for sharing.

Nice video! I'm not sure if anyone else has pointed this out but trash compactor bags in America are not the same as regular trash bags, they're thicker and meant to be used with those machines that crush your trash down. So if you were trying to use a normal bag that's probably why it got holes. x

Use mesh bags for damp , soiled cloths, T shirst, socks etc to allow them to breath rather than sealed plastic bag. Also use a thermal blanket in summer great weight saver. Use 'firebox' to heat water & cook, only needs some twigs, so saves on cannisters & they can easily run out of gas on long walks.

Hey buddy, quite efficient. Nice bag too, great pocket sizes. You might be interested in finding a healthy adhesive to glue two bottle caps together which have a hole bored into each, then if you choose, you can attach your sawyer to a bottle :)

Interesting choice of kit. I'm constantly improving my gear and aim to save weight with new products that come on the market. Looking at your video, its interesting that some of the stuff you bring I would not take or there are more compact choices available, but then I bring stuff that you probably would not bring - so its all up to individual choices. Worth noting, also depends on the season and where you go. This type of kit is ok for 3 season or areas with mild winters (no lower than 0 degrees I would say) and not extreme winds and rain. But good work dude, getting it to under 10kg incl. the food is great. Didn't see it but I assume your 8kg don't include 2-3l of water right? So realistically your travel weight is 10-11kg?

If ur hiking near a water source, u can hike with less, hydrate b4 ascents, filter as u go. If not, than yes, you'll need to carry more water. I have 2-2L cnoc water reservoirs (dirty-orange & clean-blue bags) + filter for my water kit, plus another 2L bag + hose, plus an additional hose that'll screw onto any soda pop bottle. How much water? 0.5L/hr + 1L/1000ft elevation gain. Pre-hydrate 1L over 3h b4 in little sips.

the Levity is a nice pack, except, it will not stand-up and always falls over and the side pockets are really hard to get a water bottle in and out of when the pack is full, plus the hip belt rubs a bit on the hips, the Exos belt is better

Really good video, your complete pack out list is great. I hope you have good luck with the Soto stove and cook set. The cook set is a little small for me, but I am so used to traveling with a larger group.

Good video, I took some tips from you, thank you! One tip from my side, your selection of snacks is not too healthy, this year I "discovered" bars based on dates, and so far those are my number #1. Their structure is similar to gingerbread, I have no problems eating them, digesting, they mix well with isotonic drinks, and they taste really good (Purella Food Be Raw, Lifefood Lifebar, Raw Energy, those series/brands I know and like). However whenever I manage banana (real fruit) is the best "snack" of all time.

Great info. I am not a huge dried fruit fan though. Nuts and bananas I can dwal with.

I don't have a rucksack yet and would like to get one. Osprey seen to be very popular. I was looking at the Kestrel 48. I'm really not up on sizes to get as some use a 65 and they seem huge.

Great video again Paul, I’ve been following you for years, the amount of kit you must have is amazing 😂😂😂 I was a little dissapointed you didn’t give the M&Ms a mention, I’ve started to take a bag with me on my trips now as they are a great treat. Keep em coming mate. Atb. Tony

People with so much kit are idiots or promoters.

Andy, I don’t think Paul is either of those, he just likes buying kit and lets everyone know what he thinks about that piece of kit.... I quite enjoy the little reviews that he does and I think your statement is a tad harsh mate, in all his videos he has never once stated that people should purchase any particular product.

2:16 In regards to your drinking system I can highly recommend 'Katadyn - BeFree' as an alternative. It's one of my favourite pieces of gear! I guess that it's pretty much the same concept as the 'sawyer micro squeeze', however Katadyns version seems a bit more simple and convenient to me. Putting it very simple it's a bottle shaped bladder with a filter. You just squish the water into your mouth whenever you're thirsty. It sure does take the hassle out of getting clean water on the go! Anyways, thank you for the video! It's always interesting to see what others put into their bags :-)
