nice vid, question; what is the correct thing to do if you find yourself in a lightning storm. You said a little about it here but what if you cant get to your card (dont have one), is it to go into your shelter or to leave it and hunker down somwhere else?

That's all great info! Thanks for the video. To answer your last question, yes i have been wild camping before, and my tip would be to go with some seasoned people to show you the ropes! You will be able to do the same for beginners as you gain experience.

Keeps the mind and the hands busy, the noise of the gas, the taste of the hot drink, less bother than a fire but just as much fun.

Just watched this from start to finish and now want to start going on trips like this! Anyone recommend an organised trip where you get to do this and learn about wild camping?

Never use the banshee 200 personally. But had a 2011 spectre 200 (should be 1.5 as 2 people is a push unless you know them intimately 😅) such solid tents and for the price pretty bomb proof. Have had mine in some horrendous weather. Still have it and still in 100% working condition. Just treated myself to a nemo dagger 2p, just wanted lighter and more space for the dog and kids to join from time to time wild camping. But the vango tents are GOAT'ed 😂

Great video and info! I have been intrigued by bivvys since I only grew up using canvas tents. Appreciate it

Right enjoyed this video Paul, last year i walked up Rannerdale Knotts, starting off at the bridge hotel at Buttermere and up the nice steady slopes, it was a great walk up for a man of my age 64 at the time, but when i came down the other side i was a bit like you where i was so scared and was in 2 minds to come down on my bum lol, also said wont be coming down that way again.

Funny this riminded me I needed to do a Chrismas Shopping trip to my local Go Outdoors. Having done the shopping I had a wander round. I was supprised that actually decent kit is getting cheaper. There was an R3.5 sleeping mat, light weight(ish) about 500grm, for £105. and a decent -5 Confort bag for just over £100. Assuming my heart op happens early next year I may want a Durstan X done 1+ yet another 1kg tent but including poles. I bought Smart wool socks and a top for one of the family. Thanks for an interestibng vid.

We're not far from seeing Paul's grinning face holding camping gear in an advert at the outdoor store. His little orange collapsible cup (Have a cup with Paul) or he'll be twirling tent stakes or walking poles. "Paul Messner Approved".

"It's not a criminal offence" But you can be charged for trespassing so pitch late and leave early so you're not seen. The irony here is wild.

Paul, thanks for this post. Absolutely, would go with the larger backpack and carry an alpha poncho/tarp, with the tiny tent. I’m a bit big, (5’10”, 230 lbs) for comfort in a tiny tent, IDK; however, it seems much better than a bivy. You illustrate courage, up on that exposed mountain, for giving it a go. Again, much appreciation…from an old vet, retired in the US foothills of the Smoky Mountains.

I bought one of those in 2012 have used it ever since in the worst of what wales can throw at it, plus a few nights in Scotland and lakes, my only gripe is I can't sit up in it. But I'm over 6 ft. It has helped up to Snow, sleet etc

the problem isnt your 50 year old bladder, its your 50 year old prostate - that where age takes its toll. the choice there would just fry my mind - you can have too much of a good thing!

Nowadays, no tent lasts 12 years ! After 2 or 3 years, the fabrics become porous and the tent has to go to garbage so you have to purchase a new one…

Love your videos Paul,I feel so chilled out watching them, I don’t hike but travel around Europe on my motorcycle, your gear reviews are ace, one question I do have, Asa biker I need a compact warm sleeping bag, what would you recommend? I’m looking mid range and not the mummy style if possible… thank you, keep up the great work

From a customer perspective & whilst it looks new, all very well and good. Let’s hope JD have got the resupply & staffing correct to maintain this look after 12 months. From experience, I doubt it. Though I hope JD have learnt from there experiences from the several years that they’ve owned GO. Would love to see a store like this further south.

If you speak to a bike shop you may get the front chain ring down a lot lower. I don’t use a Brompton but I do go out on my bike for two months at a time and I use a 28 chain ring and it means I can ride just about any hill if I slow down and just ride steady up. Not sure what the gear rations are of a Brompton but they do have a bike packing version with chunky tyres so maybe a low range gear set too.

Heard you say you're after a family tent for next year. I have a vango illusion 500 airbeam tent with footprint, carpet, sunshine and zip on sun canopy for sale. Used twice then bought a caravan. We also have vango kitchen cupboard unit and vango wardrobe plus two vango Campbell plus vango twin gas cooker, and more. Looking to sell the whole lot as one for a great price.

Paul I’ve witnessed several air beams failing, multiple failure modes too, not just popping, deflating but just plain instability in weather.

If you know nothing about bikes, then a Brompton is an option. Do a little more homework and get that silly idea out of your head that a Brompton is anything more than an overpriced crap bike.
