I help buy tents for a scout group. My local Go Outdoors has been great and the staff have always been helpful. You have to be a smart shopper. So best buys over the years, we’ve picked up a 6 man berghaus air tent for £230 and a Lazer Competition for £200.

If you haven’t got a hot water bottle a small coke bottle in a sock filled with boiling water works just as well.

I bought a hilleberg akto about a decade ago, very similar design. I’ve spent a lot of nights in it, all sorts of weather and it’s still going strong.

Go Outdoors also discount another 4% if you have a caravan club or RSPB or some other membership card.

Hi Paul. I use my old field jacket. If it will be cold, I also bring the liner. It has served me for fourty plus years (damn, it has been a long time). I also have my poncho, which fits over my packs and has a liner, which I usually use as a carpet in my tent. I may get some water in around my neck, but rhey have never really failed me. FYI- falling down in a stream or puddle voids all statements, haha.

I drink coffee ten times per day, Starbucks, Costa, McDonald’s, everywhere. The fancy filtered/ground stuff is totally overrated. Even if there was some very slight benefit taste-wise, you couldn’t justify the hassle and all that crap you need to carry just to have a cup. And why the hell do outdoors people always assume we want to see them cooking and eating… Jesus.

I’ll take a wild stab-in-the-dark and allege the jetboil (and it’s ilk) might be made in China. Therefore, surely AliExpress will likely have it for way cheaper than any UK store, irrespective of the wait for the delivery? I did a similar thing with Evans Cycles, I’d bought a bike light which awarded me a £20 discount voucher. They were price-matching any other UK bricks-and-mortar store, that crucially had the item in stock at time of price-matching. So item in question, a Park Tool PCS-10 workstand, list price £150, Evans price £119.99, Winstanley Bikes price £104.99 and minus my £20 voucher, becomes (drum roll please) £84.99. Shop bloke said in a very patronising manner “oooh, you’ve done well haven’t you?” I know full well the staff can get the same product for far less than that. (Plus, he initially claimed he couldn’t find it on winstanleys site despite me showing to him on my phone). But the key is to price-match, shop around virtually and bide your time.

Good afternoon Paul. Merry Christmas. Yes, I just started watching your channel today. In answer to your "which would you rather" questions, Wool, instead of down or synthetics. I have never used an alcohol stove, so gas it is (although, I really like my twig stove). Not a fan of Hillerburg tents (unless I ever go to Mt Everest, then I believe they are a must), so pretty much any orher tent is better. I do want to say thank you. I have been "wild camping" since the mid 70's, and except for a few bits of outdoor wisdom I learned from my grandfather, I had to learn by trial and error the skills for camping in the mountains, desert, and jungle. The first video of yours I watched, you were the first bushcrafter, wild camper, etc, who saved the fallen shavings to start your fire. I learned from my grandfather to save shavings, sawdust, and small twigs from cutting firewood, making getting the fire going a lot easier and quicker. Everyone else I have watched always does three seperate tasks. I will watch all your videos, but it will take some time. Stay safe and have fun. Jeff and Meeka.

Hi Paul. My SHTF prep is going to be a goretex bivvy bag, tarp and mil tec pilots sleeping bag and army issue (uncomfortable) foam roll mat. What are your thoughts? The idea is stealth camping for maybe 3 days or so or a long weekend away next summer and I have to carry everything on my back, or in webbing..... Cheers and merry Christmas to you

I also mix in fakes and change my bags every day when I go out. I previously bought a WOC Caviar dupe on the kislux and I loved it, but I wasn't going to pay $3500 + tax for such a small bag/SLG.

You need to play the game... The price match less a further 10% is of course better than just a price match. This stops you ordering from the cheapest seller, and stick with G.O. This works very well on the bigger ticket items. Just be careful, as some big ticket items are exclusive to G.O. (Such as a Vango tent that has a different name and/or colour in G.O., that cannot be bought elsewhere, despite being an otherwise direct copy). A G.O. price match can only be done with an identical make/model/colour/size etc. Also, share your name and post code with friends and family, et voila, they too become members simply by announcing "Yes, I'm a member, but I've forgotten my card"! Also, don't renew (£5 for 12 months) until you need it again. They don't back date the renewal from when it ran out, so if you don't use them for a while, just renew when you next go to the tills. (They remind you that your card has expired, and "Would you like to renew?". It's a game. Play it well, and it's worth playing... even if every game ends in a draw, and nobody ever wins, but there are no losers either!

Hi, Good useful video, potentially life saving. I have been walking mountains and camping in them for the last 55 years having been introduced to them by the RAF in 1970. This video contains some very good advice, though personally I have advised folk to keep away from certain areas entirely such as the Cairngorm plateau in February. I have also sometimes suggested that camping in some areas with someone is safer than being on your own. By the way, I love the Cairngorms but (I believe that), they require careful timing, training, the right gear and a bit of luck.

Ultralight makes sense if your priority is to travel great distances in the shortest time possible. Outside of that, comfort should be a priority. Many influencers are to blame for pushing the ultralight way, only to abandon it eventually themselves. Winter camping is the only camping I do. I’m in Canada so we are talking about-30 C for me.

A very refreshing, inspiring and honest video. It is what it is in terms of the advertising etc. You do this full time so you have got to find a way somehow to make money. I am currently in vietnam and i am looking to do something similar thanks to people like you who have inspired me. Inalso like the fact you talked aboutvthe mental health benefits as well. Keep up the good work, i have subscribed and look forward to seeing more content. Merry xmas.

TrekkerTent Saor would be the better alternative to a Unna and made in Scotland. Probably the best LW freestanding tent you can buy.
