On September 15, 2017 we wanted to backpack 11 miles over to my favorite place in the world, Golden Lake and spend the night there. Unfortunately the ranger at the trailhead told us that the Nash Fire was only about 3 miles away and it was not recommended that we hike to Golden Lake because we could get stuck there if the fire decided to migrate downhill. So our second choice was a 7 mile hike up to Broken Top crater, and we spent the night at No Name Lake.
**As of 2019 camping is no longer allowed within 1/4 mile of the lake.

Thank you. They're quite blurry because I didn't have a tripod, just set my camera on a rock. But they're decent for my first try.

That's an awesome spot! I've backpacked there a couple of times in the past. It looks like you guys camped at "No Name Lake" which is actually not in the main crater of Broken Top. The main crater is a little southwest of No Name Lake, and even higher, and surrounded by steeper walls. On maps the main crater is covered by the Crook Glacier, and in summer it's also a large lake. It's a really steep scramble up the path beside the outlet stream to get up into the main crater. I've been at both spots and they are equally amazing! Nice that you were able to get into No Name Lake later in the season when the water level is low enough that you can camp up there. On a side note - there is a way to scramble from where you camped at over the ridge, to drop down into an area close to Golden Lake. Some friends of mine have gone that route and saved some miles going around (but it's a little dangerous...) Nice video!

I had no idea there was another crater. Most people refer to No Name Lake as the crater. The only way I would go to Golden Lake from up there is via Tam McArthur Rim trail and then down. That scramble looks extremely dangerous and I would never recommend that to anyone. Starting at Todd Lake and going around via Green Lakes is actually not very far (only 10 miles) nor is it a hard trail, hardly any elevation gain. Or you can go via Park Meadow, that's the shortest way.
@JimRodgers
@JimRodgers 7 жыл бұрын
Yep, I totally agree. That scramble over the ridge and down to Golden lake is ridiculously dangerous looking and I wouldn't probably attempt it. Next time you go over to Broken Top you can divert off the main train across country and head toward the big gap in the main crater, south of No Name Lake. There are user trails going up both sides of the outlet stream. it's a very steep scramble but easy enough for even the average day hiker. And the view inside the crater is awe-inspiring. What gets me every time I get up there is the scale if things - it's huge! :) In summer the glacier melts and forms another lake in there. Worth another trip next summer! :D

Wow, I really loved this video. I’ve been talking about wanting to do this hike, and I think camping there is a great idea. It’s almost too beautiful to just spend a short amount of time before turning around and heading back. I’m doing this. Thanks for the inspiration!

Yes, that's how I felt on my last day trip up there. I was so exhausted by the time I got up there (6 miles to the lake) that I didn't even have the energy to hike up to that rim and check out the view of the Three Sisters. It's definitely more enjoyable as an overnighter! Keep in mind, the lake is pretty much frozen and there is snow up there until mid to late July.

Hike Oregon I’ll see how long and intense this winter is, and maybe plan a trip for August. It’s 3.5 hrs to the trailhead for me, so it’ll definitely be a backpacking trip because there’s no way I want 7 hrs in the car plus a 14 miler. This is one of my favorite videos of yours!

Yes, I recommend mid-August. September was definitely a bit cold. It was in the upper teens that night with the wind-chill.

Since people can't seem to follow the 200" from water (as seen here in this video) there is now going to be a 1/4 mile restriction put into place, so no camping within sight of the lake.

Hey thanks Jim! Here is the camera I use. It's just a simple camcorder since I don't have a lot of money and it was the cheapest one I could find that had one of those cool flip out screens so i can see myself when I'm filming my sit-down videos. It also has AMAZING zoom! Sony HDR-CX405 amzn.to/2xvXyXf

Beautiful country; do you ever fish in the lakes on your hiking trips?
@HikeOregon
@HikeOregon 7 жыл бұрын
I don't fish. This particular lake doesn't have fish, but many others in lower elevations do. I see them jumping all the time. Fishing is very good in Oregon lakes. Mainly trout. Many lakes get stocked via airplane every few years.

Breathtaking! How was driving to the actual trailhead? I’ve read some scary stuff about it in the FB groups, but we’ve gotten to Opal Creek in our van. Is it even possible for Broken Top?
@HikeOregon
@HikeOregon 7 жыл бұрын
That rough road is only if you do the shorter hike. If you start at Todd Lake and do the 14 mile round trip hike, the road to the Todd Lake parking lot is fine. But yes, you do need a high clearance vehicle to get to that upper trailhead, it's WAY rougher than Opal Creek. It's dubbed one of the roughest roads in Oregon :D.

Hike Oregon I will try my best! Can you still go up there in November tho? :/
@HikeOregon
@HikeOregon 7 жыл бұрын
Definitely not. The season for this lake is incredibly short as it is up at 8,000 ft. Depending on the year, mid-July until end of September. The day after I was there (mid September) is when the first snow fell up there).

Hey girl I have a question! Firstly thank you so much for this video and ALL your videos!! I’m heading up to broken top in the morning and I know you can’t camp at the lake anymore, was there any good camping spots at the higher viewpoint you hiked up to?
@HikeOregon
@HikeOregon 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't camp on the ridge because it will be windy. You can walk further along the ridge away from Broken Top and find some nice places tucked away in some smaller trees. There are also some nice spots along the creek on the way up to No Name Lake.

We so wanted to do the Three Sisters Loop this summer but a week before we planned to go the fires shut everything down. So just to do something before the snow hit, we decided to go up to Broken Top Crater. It's spectacular! I don't belong to any hiking groups, no. Hit me up on Instagram or the Hike Oregon Facebook messanger if you wanna chat about hiking.

Have you done this hike/overnight in June before? Will it be colder than 24° at night in June?
@HikeOregon
@HikeOregon 5 жыл бұрын
It’s not accessible in June unless you want to snowshoe. The lake is likely still frozen over and there is snow most of the way up. Especially this year. There are still 9 feet of snow at the trailhead as of right now.
