I share many items that you show here. I would add car window mesh for rear windows to have the windows down during the night and a little fan to provide some air circulation.

I put reflective tape on my bear can. I'm contemplating tossing an Apple Air Tag in my can on my next trip. If the bear knocks it around some, I'd go to where I left it & see if I can find it with the Air Tag.

I hiked sections 1 and 2 of the OCT in 2022. Incredibly beautiful hiking. But there are places with long stretches w/o available water. The most difficult aspect is road walking Hwy 101. The crown is steep, the asphalt shoulders narrow, and the cars fast. Twenty miles of that was enough for me. I pulled out at Lincoln City. In a couple of weeks, my son and I are going to walk the more remote section 4 to alleviate the highway miles.

Standley Cabin is a spitting image of Peavy Cabin, near Baker City. It was a former fire lookout. I wonder if they share that provenance?

Just seeing this video after going on my first Kayak of Clear Lake yesterday; cool video. I love photographing birds, especially raptors. It looks like an osprey was killed and eaten by another bird. The first that comes to mind is a bald eagle which will prey on anything they can catch. Also, the eagle would eat everything except most of the feathers. Legs, wings, feet. They do not discriminate.

Do you know what time of year the Erma Bell Lakes trails are maintained? A review on All Trails said it’s overgrown (although that’s from June 2022).

I think they did it in June this year. It gets maintained every year.

All disposable toilets are not created the same and hence are not designed to be used the same way. You should have read the directions on the Biffy Bag label. With 4 diagrams and a few words it tells you how to use it properly. The first 2 toilets you must use with a bucket or toilet otherwise you have to spread them on the ground, hover and aim. In other words make a mess. The Biffy Bag was designed to be used as a stand alone toilet system that needs no bucket or commode to be used comfortably. You simply take the two perforated straps, tie them around your waist, pull the specially designed bag up between your legs and let gravity do the rest. It is so well designed it is nearly impossible to soil yourself which is a great big plus if you ask me. The Biffy Bag material maybe thin but it is very stretchy and tough. In fact they use an additive that is used in ice bags making them remain flexible even at 30 degrees below zero. The silver transport bag has a puncture resistance of 13 PSI, a 50 PSI burst strength with a black out liner so no one can see what is inside. The gel on all of the bags state LIQUID SOLIDIFING GEL, not solid solidifying gel. They all need liquid to work as stated. The Biffy Bag powder is an effervescent powder that releases Oder neutralizers and engulfs the waste which is very impressive. Comes with almost 8 feet of 2 ply TP and the wet wipe is 2 X the size of the others. The Biffy Bag is far superior to the other 2 brands and has won the Guides Choice Award as the Worlds best disposable toilet.

Nice video! I knew as soon as your anxiety 'scene' started, before you said what was happening, that the anxiety feeling was hitting you. 😅 I go backpacking solo a lot, and that same feeling still hits me sometimes... and for some reason seeing other people around always helps shake that dread for me, too (even though I'm a big introvert off the trails). Hah 😅 That was so relatable for me. Thanks for sharing your trip/experience authentically!

Turn socks inside out so we can see the stitching, I get blisters ON TOP of my toes from the toe stitching when trying to do extended hikes. Just wearing socks indoors with problematic toe stitching is not okay, it can be a constant pressure annoyance. Secondly showing off the colour of the socks seems odd, why not cover WHY they might be the right hiking socks, what materials, what thickness, how easy do they slide or not, not just stupid brand names (That unfortunately seems to make bad and cheap socks), not to mention hiking is not limited to one country, we might not have access to random brand name stuff locally.

The whole purpose of Hike Oregon is to share trails so that folks can be equipped with the knowledge they need to feel confident outdoors. I have been sharing lesser known hikes for years and have never seen an increase on those trails. There are many trails that aren’t getting hiked on enough and they’re actually disappearing. If you don’t like what I do you can take your views elsewhere.

Oh, the mosquitoes near Big Lake! We actually ran the last part heading back to the trailhead at Hwy 20 because we were getting attacked so severely. For some reason they liked my elbows and bit right through my jacket. Sounds like some great hikes, thanks for all you do! Hope your back is healing quickly and as it should.

Hi! Nice to meet you. I've recently been interested in loosely researching this information on the internet. I also ordered a Hiker's Cache bear canister with some accessories such as reflective tape, reflective stickers, a Counter Assault Bear Canister carrying case (because the reviews for quality seemed good enough) just for carrying it and attaching it to a backpack and not to store it outside somewhere, and some location tile devices. I learned from another source to never attach something to a bear canister (when storing outside with interesting smelling things inside of it). Because if something is attached to the bear canister then the bear (or maybe some other animal) could carry it off somewhere. So I imagine if we were to tie the bear canister up with paracord then the bear could bite it off and then drag it with the paracord in between it's teeth. This idea made me reconsider the idea of trying to hang a bear canister over a tall tree branch in a bag to keep a bear from scratching it and possibly rolling it away somewhere. Perhaps it could be possible to underestimate the bear's ability to remove the bagged bear canister from a tree branch. Especially with the bear's powerful food gathering instincts and big appetite as it prepares for the next winter. *Someone wrote in an article called: How Do I Use a Bear Canister? - Grand Teton National Park (U.S. National Park Service): "Do not attach anything to the canister (ropes attached to the canister may allow a bear to carry it away)."

Nice video. Full of useful information. Regarding undoing your hip belt: The big issue with falling into the water and not being able to remove your pack, is that it will act as a floatation device and force you float head down in the water. Unable to raise your head or twist your body around so you can get air. Some folks now advocate that you keep your pack tight, only undoing your chest strap. The reason being that you might be more likely to fall if your pack shifts and changes your balance point. This is more likely to happen if you have items attached to the bottom of your pack (foam pad/tent/etc) and the moving water suddenly hits those items. Or if you slip and the pack swings away from your body. YMMV ~S
