Hi Andy, thanks for another great video. I am currently hiking in the Lake District with my 2 Collies and I bought this exact pad a few weeks ago. You are 100% right its an absolute gamechanger; this is the 3rd time I've used it and the temperature in Penrith, (Kirkstone Pass), earlier this week dropped down to -1°, and It is so warm and comfy it's unbelievable. I'm very pleased as I was a little sceptical because of the price but winner 🎉

In all honesty. I've had a thermarest neo air xtherm since 2016 for few hundreds of nights that I've used it, I have punctured it only two times and both of them because I pack it on my bike several times and it was rubbing against the handlebar. I was able to fix it on the go and no problem. I would buy it again
@_Mountain_Dave2 күн бұрын
100% i've used xthems them from arctic circle to altitude, never had a fail that was due to mat defect. ALso never seen climbing/expedition partners fail either. It's though to take seriously a winter mat that is 20D base fabric, or any for that matter. When it come's to mat's, yes the thermorest are expensive but they are reliable, and i have used just about every brand over the years, nothing comes close (i wish they would as would help drive competition and price points) but as much as i would love this product shown to be great, i have serious concerns for longevity and its ability to sustain ground punctures.
@Life-Outdoors-UK2 күн бұрын
It certainly looks good value, especially if you are an occasional camper. I'm currently on my third (2nd replacement pad) os the Big Agnes Rapide SL. They have developed a pinprick hole at the baffling on the top after 6 months camping around 35 nights. Big Agnes replaced free, no problem. It will be interesting how well this lasts and what the customer service is like. If it only lasted 6 months and they wouldn't replace, it starts being an expensive pad very quickly.
@johnpeterson33862 күн бұрын
Agree, the Thermarest is FAR more durable than this pad which has a very thin bottom AND top. This video is simply offering terrible advice on the durability question. There are a few reasons to dislike the Thermarest, but durability is simply not one of them.
@_Mountain_Dave2 күн бұрын
Andy its worth highlighting that this material is 3 1/2 times thinner that a winter pad from Thermorest on the base material, and 50% thinner on the top side. Materials matter for longevity particular on expedition use. I cannot see this in anyway being a threat to thermorest and in terms of difficulties ive used them all over the world in the harshest conditions, not had/seen one fail re xtherms. The only issues i'm aware of as a brand or product i would avoid is the uberlight as they were failing, or rather far more susceptible from ground punctures (thinner material)! But its like i always say to skimp for a few grams for your sleep system is the worst decision possible, sleep is vital for health, performance and also in the short term critical for keeping safe and not being tired. One thing i think is worth highlighting and really would be useful on your videos that are covering winter camping is always carry a closed cell mat also encase the airbed fails and the conditions are such that you cannot move, and of course carry a realiable Bivy. They are also very useful if solo, and take a bad fall and smashed up, you might not be able to inflate an airbed, but you may just be able to roll onto the matt, and get the bivy over (aka buying time until rescue not dying from hyperthermia)

My mate had a Sea to Summit Extreme mat that failed. He spend 5 nights frozen! For longer trips, a non-inflatable back up is a great idea 👍
@johnpeterson33862 күн бұрын
@@BackpackingUK And this pad is a close emulation of the very Sea to Summit pad. I've had several seam failures on the StS pads, which is pretty bad because they can't be field repaired. They are VERY comfortable, but prone to failure, and I'd assume this cheaper knock-off is likely MORE prone to failure. And yet you're somehow implying it has better durability than the Thermarest. More comfortable? Sure. Less Noisy? Absolutely. More durable? That's frankly absurd.
@_Mountain_Dave2 күн бұрын
@BackpackingUK yea Andy he's not the only had both them and Expeds fail, the latter with a shocking customer service. I should have added also re uberlight I referenced I think thermorest has withdrawn them anyway, making the decision using thinner materials isnt worth the brand damage I guess. As sad as it is re wallet, I've yet to find a competitor to the Xtherm as yet. Tried, heavily tested and wouldn't hesitate to get another, one last point, whilst most of the stuff is made in China these days, thermorest xtherms are built in Ireland, I'm more inclined to trust ratings and safety if you get what I mean. But yea closed cell matt essential in winter, insanity to leave without one.

I personally use an Exped Downmat UL Winter for the last 4 years & its never let me down at all with insulation or quality. I definitely agree with Mountain_Dave...sleep system is one place you don’t save grams for potential failure when the mercury plummets. You’re just asking for trouble.
@JenneferFurrer2 күн бұрын
A sleeping pad like this uses two methods of insulation. Reflective layers that reflect radiated heat, and separated small air pockets to decrease convective heat loss. If you are bottoming out, the the air chambers aren't acting as convective insulation, and even worse, direct contact with the ground means conductive heat loss. So they wisely upgraded the thickness to 10cm, which will achieve the desired effect. Most brands currently only have a thickness of 7cm.
@TakahiroCavelierКүн бұрын
I camp very often and in all weathers but don’t hike, so weight and pack size isn’t that important. I use the Thermarest Trail Pro and have the size L. That definitely looks great value for money Andy 👍🏻 i just use my big agness rapide with a foam mat under it which keeps me toasty in icy conditions, but ill definitely consider this if i need to replace a pad. An interesting note on thermarests....when i worked in the outdoor retail industry, we worked out that the vast majority of faulty returns were on "made in USA" ones, the "made in Ireland" ones are much more reliable, my old mk.1 neoair x lite is made in Ireland and is still going strong after over a decade of heavy use, no punctures, leaky valves...nothing, its been bomber.....but so it should be for the price, luckily i got a great staff discount at the time.

It is difficult to inflate the air pump to 100%. I used FLEXTAIL and it was at most 97%. Andy in the video also could not reach 100% because this small air pump is not powerful enough. So I suggest that if you are very concerned about the size, for example, if you are 185cm+ tall, please choose 200cm, because you also need to consider the size of the pillow, which will occupy some size. However, after you use the air bag several times and operate it skillfully, you can reach the advertised size 100%. A reminder: use the air bag and don't worry about inflating this sleeping pad. I read other reviews. Neither tar nor sts can guarantee that every sleeping pad sold will not have quality problems. The important thing is that we provide a complete after-sales policy.
