Great video! I’m a lot like you. I usually pitch it up higher so I don’t have to crouch over. Mainly because I’m old. Easy in and easy out. The only times I pick it lower, but not low, is if they are calling for rain and wind. Without the wind I keep it sky high. Porch mode is what I use 95% of the time. I just got back yesterday from a trip where I took my niece hammock camping (she’s a hammocks for life) again and it poured allllll night. We were both high and dry. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten wet in my hammock and I’ve been out in some doozies of storms.

Great points! That part about noises is so true. I like being able to peek out to see what is going on. The tarp was one of the factors that attracted me to hammock camping (aside from a great night’s sleep OFF the ground). I wanted to move away from the bulky, heavy cabin tent, but did not want to have to crawl in the mud to enter and exit. I also wanted to be able to take off my rain jacket without soaking my sleeping gear in the process. And I wanted to be able to stand up to change clothes. The tarp allows all of that. BTW - A strategically placed hiking umbrella and/or a shemagh or large furoshiki can help with privacy when camping in group settings.

yep - high and dry with a view of the sky. I once had a possum hissing at me after midnight. Woke me up and didn't know what it was at first - never heard one hiss before - but grabbed my Olight and shined it right up while I lay in my hammock because my tarp was high in porch mode. ATB

100% agree on all of that. Many time we went on a Scout camping trip and it was raining when we were setting up. Tarp up 1st, nice and high. Sitting in my hammock with gear all nice and dry before any of the other adults had their tents up. Way more headroom and floor space than any civilian tent. Semper Fi, Marine!

I pitch my tarp low like a tent when I know a storm will hit and the wind will pick up, but it created a bunch of condensation on the under of the tarp. So I'll give your technique a try, Ron. thanks buddy

If possible. If I know a storm maybe coming or there is a strong cold wind blowing. I will find two tress that will allow me to pitch the back side low. And the front still in porch mode. No wind. Beautiful view. I was able to do this a few years ago in winter. When there was a windchill of -60° below zero. And it worked great.

You are absolutely correct! I have a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC hammock and use a 10x13 tarp for mild weather and a Warbonnet Superfly tarp with doors for winter. If I can't walk upright under my tarp, it's too low. If the tarp can't reach the ground, buy a bigger tarp. Keeping the tarp stored in snakeskins will not only keep it packed small, but will make it faster to deploy, handy when it's raining.

Another video of great tips Marine! The thing I've found so nice about tarps over hammocks, is the versatility. You can always find a way to pitch the tarp to fit your needs or changing weather conditions. I've even on occasion, pitched the tarp, then leave the stakes in the ground and put the tarp back in the snakeskin for those crisp fall nights for viewing the stars, pull the snakeskin off and the stakes are ready for the guylines if needed to keep the frost off.

Absolutely! The best tarp pitch is in the snake skin. I sleep like a baby when I fall asleep watching the stars. With everything setup. I only takes seconds to redeploy. the problem where I live. It can rain at anytime. Plus, our weathermen don't have a clue. So you always have to be prepared. thank you Scott for watching. I really do appreciate it.

A tent with vestibules vents just fine in the rain , as long as it has 2 , had my doors wide open during rain storm and it was nice and cool in my tent , but im also a fan of hammocks for being off the ground , i think both have pros and cons but a hammock id would agree has more pros , lighter being the first and most important and space in a pack second, like you said.... find what works for you 👍...

Short girl here. I usually find that stringing the tarp ridgeline as high as I can reach puts the tarp high enough so that I only have to duck slightly to enter. That is perfect as it is not so high as to allow a ton of splashback when it inevitably rains. The only exceptions are when one tree is on higher ground than the other or when the distance between the two is much greater than ideal. In those cases, I use my trekking poles to scootch the line higher.

Great video once again! I'm curious about the setup you have for storing your tarp - are you using a mesh sleeve and a stuff sack combo? I'm thinking the mesh sleeve is to get it out of the way when it's very nice out without having to completely disassemble and the stuff sack is for compressing for travel? Would you mind sharing the manufacturers of both, or your preferred setup - if it is different now?

I have all of my tarps in mesh sleeves ( snake skins ). Then I will store the tarp in the sleeve. In a double end stuff sack. This is by far the best way for the many conditions and situations. The mesh sleeves you can get at ( www.superiorgear.com ) or ( www.hammockgear.com ) I always get my double end stuff sacks from ( www.warbonnetoutdoors.com ) My last cabin was on Gall Lake across from Hollman's Resort. We could of bumped into each other years ago.

Where I live. There are no Brown or Grizzly Bears. But a high population of Black Bears and Timber Wolves. So the only thing that I would be concerned about is Moose in the fall time. During the rut. But as far as cooking close to where I sleep. MICE. Those little varmints can do a lot of damage to your gear. Especially your pack. I am always careful not to have any food in or odor in my pack. The two that I mostly use are 3.4mx3m and 3.6mx3.2. I love large tarps. The reason why these two look larger is because I always set the hammock farther back. So my next one is going to be 4mx3.3m. Thank you Wildsau for watching. I really appreciate it.

sorry, using hammock has no advantages over using tent. It weights more ( when you sum all you need : tarp, hammock with stropes, a lot of ropes to have your tarp properly set up. ) most important , it takes much, much longer time to setup. Setting modern tent is 5 min. If you have no expirience , may be 10. If somebody can setup this hammock + tarp in 5 min, please share your video of doing it. Even leveling hammock ( so you dont slide in it ) is a peace of art. So, using hammock is just a way to sell extra gear. The only case when hammock will work much better than tent is when you in heavy rain territory with water flooding on a ground. So you have no choice. All being said is my opinion only. P.S. My 20 years old tent still works for me in most trips. My hammocks ( i have 2 ) covered in dust in garage.
