Beams of neutrons can be used to make important discoveries in the world of nanoscience.
Here we explore three instruments (and beamlines) at the ISIS facility in Oxfordshire, where Neutrons are put to use.

I really love this channel and all the others that Brady has (periodicvideos, sixtysymbols etc.)! Keep up the amazing work and never ever stop making videos!! They are great, fun, exciting and educational. Thank you so much Brady!! =)

I love how detailed the descriptions are of the machines parts. Can you, Brady, post the uncut footage?

That's one huge detector! Very cool video.

I had no idea you could do that with neutrons. Thank you!

@epauker I think the point is so that you can't leave it on by accident and then go into the room. I'm pretty sure the key being removed would let someone know that another person's in the room

Actually, the damage is much lower compared to other microscopic techniques like electron or x-ray microscopy. The damage is so low, it's even one of the most important advantages of neutron microscopy.

"to look at small stuff you push the detector forward, to look at big stuff you push the detector farther away" Hmm, reminds me of something, oh yes, Father Ted trying to explain to Dougal the difference between "small" and "far away"...

I'm certain that there are very stringent procedures that must be followed regarding the key and it's placement.... additionally, if you notice in the vid there is a kill switch for the beam on the wall inside the chamber, and I'm certain an alarm sounds when the door is locked or when the beam is about to be activated. Seeing that a video camera of the inside of test chamber has been added I would suspect that the beam operator has a monitor he must check to insure the chamber is empty.

That safety lock doesn't seem to be very useful to me. He put one key in the door, opened the door, and went in leaving the key in the lock. What is stopping someone from coming by, shutting the door, removing the key, and then turning on the system?

I thought the sign at 4:29 to commemorate the detection of neutrinos might have been a lot more accurate than 13:08 BST. I love the cerebral wit of scientists and thought we might have seen a nanosecond precise timestamp! I remember visiting a friend at his lab in Lausanne years ago and there was a prominent sign that read: No Eating, No Drinking, No Unnecessary Innovation

Im really surprised that that they can pump down that vacuum chamber in 20 minutes.

The only problem with neutrons, is that objects become radioactive by the absorption of neutrons...
