Hey, Todd, you can also add different background sets and props behind or around your feeding stations to create a variety of beautiful settings for your pictures. I use old decayed logs, limbs and stumps. Anything like that. I add vegetation like dried weeds, broom sage, etc, to create color variety in a natural habitat scene. The birds seem to like it better that way instead of just being out in the open. It doesn't take a lot. Just need enough to fill your shot. You are going to do a lot of cropping anyway on those small birds. Don't forget to add a sizable vertical limb for a perch. They all like to land on it but it will attract more woodpeckers (downey and Red-bellied) if you drill some holes in the side and put peanut butter in them. Then arrange some of the dried weeds around it. I usually set them in small flower pots hidden by the props. I believe you will like adding this bit of creativity to your bird shots which can become repetitious after a while.

Great colour contrast on the cardinal. my problem (in Australia) is it's too damn hot to spend all day outside.

Thanks for watching! I am sure that would be a problem! definitely need to do it in the early morning and late evening. It seems like Australia has some incredible bird species there though!
