Backyard Chicken Coop and Run Tour

Come along and see our DIY coop and run set up, perfect for 4-7 hens. Tips for coop and run size, predator-proofing, nest boxes, bio-security, and other topics are covered. This video was originally made for my Instagram account (@deannacat3) hence the one-minute segments. The last minute of the video is to show how the rest of our backyard is set up for sharing our space with chickens. As you can see, we have our patio area fenced off using raised beds and trellises, creating a poop-free space to hang out, and beak-free space to grow food. You'll also notice little fencing around wine barrels and the base of trees to protect them from the girls. Otherwise, they get free range of the yard!

With the solar door, how do they know what time to go up? Or do you go out at night and put them up? Love your set up and thank you for all of the information.

Hey there! Chickens put themselves to bed at dusk naturally. They cannot see in the dark, so they instinctually go someplace they feel safe to roost for the night - their coop. We set the door to close about a half an hour after they'd go in, changing the timer every few months as needed as the sunset time changes. The door also has a "last call" feature, where it re-opens for 30 seconds once more a minute after closing, just in case there are stragglers. They know the sound and what it means too 🥰

That was great to get an overview of your set up! We are trying to have a similar set up with a run. I noticed you have hardware clothe from the run that encloses part of the coop but was wondering how you made sure it was secure on the roof of the coop (did you just staple the hardware clothe into the roof?). Do you feel likke its secure? Any recommendations for how you did this? Many thanks-

We set it for quite a bit later than they go in on their own, to be safe. But the door also has a "last call" feature. It will close once for one minute, re open for 30 seconds to let in any stragglers, and then close again for good. The know the sound and get in there!
