Backyard Design: Paver Patio: Poly Sand

Polymeric sand is different than play sand. Though it may look like just sand in your paver joints, it likely is polymeric sand. Poly sand has a component to it where upon initial moisture, it sets up and gets hard. This prevents weeds from coming up, and helps to shed water away and keep it out of the joints.

I used Polysand on my own pavers. It looks great when new. It doesn't drain the water away as fast as regular sand. But, after awhile, the tops of the joints gather mold or mildew. Eventually, moss grows in the joints. Hosing off with a standard nozzle blows the Polysand out of the joints. Spread more Polysand. Repeat every three years. I gave up and just spread regular coarse sand.

One thing you forgot to do after you do your second tampering before you add water you should slightly below the dust off the top of the pavers, because they will be stained once the water hits the dust

Those 4 way corner cross joints and long seams of 5 pavers are just a no go for me. I usually try and do 4 pavers max and avoid 4 way corners at all costs. Some pavers and patterns will be fine especially ones with those tabs on the sides. But it will interlock much better to only have 3 way joints.

the sand has an adhesive in it, once it gets wet and dries it hardens together, which is why it’s so important to keep it off the surface of the pavers and why you softly apply the water, as not to splash the sand everywhere

@@RabWorks_LLC polysand is made up of fine sands and stuff but a lot of polysand is basically just silica, the writer of the comment doesn’t fully understand what silica does just that’s it bad for you and can cause cancer but the main respiratory problem people have from inhaling silica dust is called pneumaultramicroscopiccilivolcanicroniosis, its a problem caused by silica drying your body and lungs out to an extreme because silica is very very very good at absorbing water

Personal preference. Not a must. Cambridge product comes pre treated w Armour tech so no need. Always do effervescent wash before sealing or could bite you in the ass. Working on pool surround same color scheme. Looks nice!
