Hi Ben. Nice trees. I haven't tried Alphonso, but looks good and healthy. I have two Pickerings and they are our favorite mango. They have a very nice coconut aftertaste mixed with some classic flavors. Just make sure that when you eat them they are fully ripe. (all orange with red/rust spots. No green at all) We leave them on the tree until the fall off with little pressure, once they have no green at all left on the bottom, wait two more days then enjoy) Pickering is a little deceptive on growing habits. The first couple of years it was slow but steady but things for both trees have really picked up in the 3rd and 4th years. At this point they are both about 7' tall and 10-12' feet wide. Like a big bush but I can see it getting more tree like over time. First year I got 6-7 Mangos, second 26, 3rd 46 and this year I have high hopes. Also, my Pickerings were the only trees that just shrugged when Ian came through. I lost 4 trees (as in never found them after) and everything else was pushed over but the Pickerings. Good choice of tree. Give M4 a try if you haven't yet. I bet you will love it. I also have Coconut Cream. Fast growing tree, spindly growth habit, but you can prune it into submission. Had to replace after Ian, so It has not fruited yet. And I have two Honey Kiss, one from seed (Its Poly) that is growing very well but still small and one grafted that I bought from Montura Gardens that is also doing well but probably wont let it fruit for another year.

Awesome mango tree collection! 1) How often did you water your Alphonso mango tree ? 2) What type of fertilizer did you use for the Alphonso? 3) How often did you fertilize the Alphonso mango tree ? Thank you.

Thank you! For the first year or so I was watering the mango tree like once a week during the dry season and fertilizing a few times a year with all purpose fertilizer. For the past few years though I haven't watered or fertilized at all. Mango trees kind of thrive on neglect. I do use copper and sulfur sprays during flowering though.

Very nice group of trees. I have a coconut cream myself, 7g. I just planted it. The leaves do curl similar to yours. I think it gives it character but I'd like to know why. Good stuff, great looking yard!

For the Alphonso to control the height you should cut out the woody branches that have a vertical growth pattern, vertical branches hold the most nitrogen in mango trees. Coconut cream has very spindly branches but it will outgrow it. It’s one of the mangoes that sometimes dosent like pruning but because of the long branches it needs it. That Honey Kiss should be tipped around hip height, it bears so much fruit that it will weigh the branches down to the ground similar to Lil Gem and Cecilove.

Probably but frost can cause damage so best to cover them during freezes.

Mango trees need frost protection and are listed for zones 9-11. Austin is 8b so it's right on the border. You can try but might be tough.
