Berm Creek Upgrades! • Backyard MTB Trails wi...
Welcome to Berm Creek. Here’s the berm. And here’s the creek you’ll end up in if you don’t use it.
For the past few weeks I’ve been building trails at Berm Creek, or I’ve been doing my best to. If you want to build good trails-sustainable trails, Berm Creek could be a case study in what not to do.
Take and gander, and you’ll find half baked retaining walls, poor drainage, and singletrack so skinny that your pedals hit the sides. Still, I’m learning fast, and with a little luck Berm Creek will have vastly improved by the Fall. Let me show you what I’ve built so far.
This is the first trail, aptly named Berm Creek. You start on this steep descent which throws you right into a tiny berm. You can really lean into it and it’s a lot of fun.
An optional line would be this rock garden, but I’ll only use that on special occasions.
After the berm is a little detour up the hill, a turn around this tree and finally a fork in the trail.
Right of the fork is Coax Climb. It’s too muddy to ride now.
To the left is a detour called Goodman Ledge. It has a switchback so tight that I’m not even sure it can be ridden. When it dries we’ll find out.
Either path takes you back to the trailhead.
This area after the berm is right next to a drainage pipe, so I need to do something about that. We’ll call it a creek crossing.
I’ve always had respect and appreciation for trail builders, but now it runs deeper. The more dirt I move here, the more bummed out I get about tire ruts and all the damage that occurs when the trails are ridden wet. I can only imagine what it’s like to have hundreds of other people riding my trails, without any regard for who maintains the place.
Of course I won’t need to worry about that. You may have figured out by now that Berm Creek is in my backyard. Still, I always seem to get lost here. Like every good trail system, Berm Creek needs a trail map.
The map doesn’t have elevation profiles or data, but it’s still pretty awesome. Awesome enough to have a permanent spot at the trailhead. For this, I’m cobbling something together out of wooden planks. To cut acrylic you need to score it with a blade, but I didn’t have much luck with that. The jigsaw was worse. Eventually I figured it out.
Now we’re in business.
These brown fiberglas markers are just like the ones in Pisgah. I got these stickers online too.
These trails are designed for bikes, and trail dogs. Nothing against ATV’s or Horses, but I don’t have the space or resources to deal with that. Tomorrow I’ll install my trail markers, and hopefully it will dry up enough to do some riding.
My markers are installed, but it rained again last night. According to the weather it’ll rain again today, but dry up by tomorrow afternoon. By then, I’ll have some visitors to ride the trails with.
My friends Brian and Alexander came by and helped me break in the trail. We had a lot of fun, and even encountered some challenges. I almost flew into the creek.
Now that the trails are worn in there are some things I’d like to change, and add, but all in all I think Berm Creek is off to a good start.
The real purpose of these trails is for testing. When making adjustments to a bike, I can have a quick romp to make sure everything feels right. You could say that these trails are just an extension of my shop.
What do you guys think? Have any of you built something like this in your yard? Do you maintain trails in your community? Let me know in the comments, and give me some insight into what to do next. Thanks for riding with me today and I’ll see you next time.

My friends and I (a couple of 12 year olds with shovels and mtbs) went into the woods in our backyards and made a huge trail to connect everyone’s backyard. We had so much fun but yet a few trips to the doctor. It surprisingly only took about 4 months.

I have a cool trail system in the yard I grew up in, about a miles worth. It started out just me riding in the woods on one of my dad's old lawn mowers that we took the mower deck off of. In middle school I got a little side by side go cart and expanded it a bit. At the end of middle school I saved up enought for a dirt bike and I connected my trails with a neighbors who was about the same age. As we got older we built jumps and creek crossings and it became a place where we rode mountain bikes, dirt bikes, jeeps, etc... I loved maintaining it, you know clearing sticks after every storm, clearing leaves after the fall. Now when I go home to visit my parents I still love to spend a day clearing it out and walking it (because all my toys are at my house now). This vid brings back some fun memories.

How about you add one of those features that are like a wall ride! They are usually made of wooden planks with cross beams behind it for strength. You see them a lot in downhill races! If you added one on the berm it would be a great feature and make it have a little more variety!

That was what was intended! You could use the little dirt berm or go up a little farther and use the wall! I though about the room in his backyard, so I thought it would be a great idea for it take place of the berm. Or, a little hybrid of both like 1 quarter dirt berm and 3 quarters wooden wall ride!

I've built a trail in my back yard and here is the advice I have after starting it a year ago. Make it a loop trial so that you can do laps as long as you want. Make multiple paths for the trials and turn around loops so you can do the trail in reverse so there are sort of high intensity and low intensity sections. The idea is to make the trial interesting and continuous. I've gotten tired of the 20 minute drive to the trials closest to my house so it's nice to be able to go in my back yard and get a good hour or two ride in. For your trial I wound connect the heads of your trials and add a turn around at the top so you can go back down the steep drop and technical curves and then climb up the less steep hill next to the rock drops. That direction would probably be less energy consuming which will help make the trial fun in long rides. You would go the way you currently have the trial set up and when you start getting drained you would start doing it the opposite direction. This also helps work in the trial in a wider area because you will take different lines each direction. Another thing I do to make new trials is to draw up a rough line that you want for the trial and just brake up and turn over the dirt. Don't pack it in or anything just leave the dirt as soft and loose as you can and start riding that. I know it sucks and will be slow dirty riding but the dirt will get packed in to the angle and path that you ride rather than trying to create and pack banks that end up being the wrong steepness or having a packed line that is against the flow of the trial. I'm sure you've already seen that in your trial that there are sections that you end up riding just alittle to the side of where you originally built the trial. Also don't try to fight nature on your trial. If there is a section that has irrigation issues try to make the trial work with it because they will just continually be problems and destroy the trial. On my trial I have a few places that are either humps or little jumps over channels that I've made for water to flow. I don't know if these tips carry over to full sized trials but they have helped me maintain and enjoy by backyard trial.

If you emailed me your trial map I could draw on little trial connectors and add on's I think would be a lot of fun for your trial and send it back to you.

I have built a freestyle area with jumps and such and a trail around that. it is pretty big because it is in a massive dirt lot right around the corner from my house. the thing is, I live in AZ so it is a lot tougher to build and maintain jumps. I have been seeing some things pop up that i haven't built, and the trails r getting used a lot. which is great to see people r using my creation and adding onto it! at my dads house there is a crazy area in a wash where local kids(including me) have spent years building and actual freestyle park with huge jumps. we have also made countless trails that go for miles. it is not uncommon to see kids with shovels out there working on them! u should come to AZ btw, our trails are a whole new animal than what u r used to

Trail building can be such a source of accomplishment and pride. Also, such a huge frustration when people trash what you, and your friends (because it's never really done alone), have spend dozens and/or hundreds of hours building. Great job, love the little touches like the trailhead map and trail marker. :)

I have my own trails in my yard it has been slammed full of single track, dirt jumps, wooden ramps, skinny bridges, and I have a rock garden. but you did say you have a creek in the back of your yard. so my advice is cut out a shelf (like alipha) down to it then back up for some water feature. I know you re limited bc your yard is pretty steep but try to make some flow if you can. its to bad you moved I've been trying to find you at all the parks is here in florida but you got some nice riding up there! This vid inspired us to make a trail at home. We made it on the side of a small hill similar to your place. Version 1 was a bit too much work to ride with too many turns all the way back up the hill. Version 2 we tried to make it a bit more flowy and it is now more fun to ride. Next step will be to build up the berms a bit more and maybe add a small jump. Thanks for the inspiration. Building a trail has been a fun father and son project.

I find myself riding the home run when I have 15 minutes to kill and practicing my skills with no pressure to get anywhere else. Also have 6.5 acres in the ADK at our cabin, a pine forest with soft loam, BIG rocks and a stream. I’ve been working on a fun track up there. To be able to use your bike in your own yard is a joy it reminds me all the time that, I am a MTBer!!!

He probbally doesn't own the property across the creek, but good idea anyways, Or he could possibly build a jump across, That would be pretty sick

If that is a subdivision, it would be typical that the creek is part of a common area.

I really like your videos Seth I wanna do this stuff but I had a heart transplant in 2015 and in The summer of 2016 I had a set back when a virus attacked my legs and I couldn't walk and I had to learn how to walk again. I'm back to walking and even running still haven't done to much on the bike tho but I'm trying. I wish I had the money to buy a mountain bike also there are some cool spots here in Michigan. Keep making the great videos they give me a lot of inspiration.

Pretty cool trails! Think I will fly down all the way from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to ride it! Better yet I invite you Seth, to come up here and ride our trails. Apparently, we have the one of the largest green belts on any cities in North America. Along with that perhaps some of the longest single track trail systems too. That I can't be sure on. Come see for yourself!

I know I’m a year late but my father and I built a small track in our back yard that grew from bmx to mini bikes then to r/c cars after 20 years. Used a lot of soda, beer and wine to harden the faces of jumps roll in and the small straight we had. Don’t know what kind of dirt is down there but it worked wonders here in jersey!
