I buy most of my silver on ebay and this is great to know. I always test with a magnet but I will always do this test now too just for the extra peace of mind. I'm relieved to report that all my stuff passed with flying colors... Phew!

to make sure it's even silver to begin with I love using the magnet sliding test and placing ice cubes on it and seeing if it melts as fast as a similar purity sized coin/bar. with the ice cube test you will notice the silver will get as cold as the ice, will fog up and will be covered in condensation even after you dry it whilst it tries to go back to room temperature.
@BackyardBullion7 жыл бұрын
+N .A both are very good tests to do, but as you saw here the magnet test would not signal a problem. The specific gravity test will, as I showed. Thanks for watching!

Excellent video bud! This is a accurate fool proof simple non abrasive way to get purity results. I've done a video on it a long time ago using Zeke and HiHo pieces. The jolly roger is likeky melted down 90% coinage. Well done my friend, this should be all he needs to prove his case! 👍 Enjoy your vacation buddy!

Nice video friend. Its funny how this has come up in the past couple of days. A FB group was asking and I brought up this test as the best without a sigma machine plus a magnet. With those pieces you could acid test since just melt too. Someone did a video the other day too. Maybe all keep our eyes out might be a reason its come up a lot recently. Have a great holiday!

+Benthe Boy That must have been expensive! But it is definatley the most reliable method. For those of us who dont have a verifier this specific gravity test is the next best thing!
@alexconcord35974 ай бұрын
I was curious to learn how do you measure the volume. It is an easy approach but not quite sensitive. I guess if you could use graduated beakers and cylinders (laboratory glassware), to measure the volume/weight of displaced water, you should come up with more reliable data.
@dc63543 жыл бұрын
For a more accurate test, use cold water. 50 F or less. If you put and ice cube in the water, they will be near perfect.
@roxdude7 жыл бұрын
you could use a pencil to wrap the thread around to suspend the coin attach a bit of blue tack to stop it coming off. so its not moving around give you more accurate reading's. i did hear tungsten has same density as gold and this being used in some fakes now. so only true way is a pm verifier or a guess chemicals but this does work on most occasions. great video thx for sharing
@BackyardBullion7 жыл бұрын
+rox dude Thanks for the advice Rox, i think as a quick test to verify 999 or fake this dosen't have to be 100% accurate. I clearly demonstrated the difference between the 999 and the "925" and "900" so hopefully people will learn and be able and confident to test more!

It's a federal offense to misrepresent metal purity in the U.S. If the seller is doing this on a regular basis, he could be in big trouble.

so with this simple test it seems like a sigma machine is not needed? Is that accurate? I have some homemade silver I want to test and I know those machines like specific coins/bars to test. Not oddly shaped things. 🙂 Great video and saved to my PM folder!

Really interesting and I particularly like how you used available inexpensive items to help with the test (pop bottle and floss) however I wouldn't be myself if I didn't call something out; why didn't you just suspend the object from a pencil or something as the chance for inaccuracy by just holding the item from the floss is quite great.

great test BB. What would be the target specific gravity numbers for 999, 925 and 90%?
+Silver Bear it does depend on the alloy as to the exact result. It becomes quite hard to be precice when it is not 999 pr 925. But as an indication of whether something is 999 or fake there is no more accurate way!
@E-BikingAdventures5 жыл бұрын
You are misusing the word density with regards to specific gravity. You also need to factor in atomic weight. For example, lead has a high atomic weight, even higher than gold, but yet gold is 80% heavier than lead. That is because lead is not very dense. That is why it is so soft. Osmium has a lower atomic weight than gold but is denser and heavier than gold.
@AgDUK7 жыл бұрын
I like to use the magnet and weigh but I wouldn't have even touched that "silver" if it looked like that the buyer best have got got that at a very very good price but thanks for sharing your methods and have a good time away my friend
@BackyardBullion7 жыл бұрын
+Ag D so the thing with this is that as you saw the magnet test showed it to be all OK! The specific gravity test shows otherwise! I also would not have bought this silver, apart from the fact it looks piss poor in its pouring it just doesnt look like 999 silver. Miss stamping it suggests the seller either is deliberately trying to con people or he knows very little about silver! Thanks for watching and commenting!

In theory, yes there could be. It's quite unlikely though and even with that possibility it would not explain the other issues that are showing on these pieces.
@davidjones58017 жыл бұрын
I question e-bays commitment when one considers the fraudulent activity of some sellers who misrepresent their Silver bullion and rounds etc. There are a number of sellers at the moment selling unequivocally fake silver rounds, eg: 2015 silver Koala's.............Despite repeatedly notifying e-bay, the sellers continues to sell these pieces as genuine and their feedback continues to be glowing. It appears a lot of punters do not do their research after procuring their silver purchases and take for granted if the sellers feedback is good then their products must be too. Although i have bought plenty from e-bay over the years, the volume of fake silver on their pages is genuinely increasing. it appears e-bays commitment to stop or take action against this type of seller is less than pro-active as they try to make us believe. It is imperative (regardless who we purchase silver from(, it is checked over to ensure it's the genuine article. Videos like this are crucial to stop us being ripped off. We work for our money and when we spend it we should get what we have pay for. Carry on the good work........great informative video.
@BeautifulLuxury4 жыл бұрын
A 999 stamp doesn't mean anything, anybody can buy 999 punches from ebay etc. The buyer should have checked to see if it had full hallmarks.
